Following her role as curator of the 30th Klein Karoo Nasionale Kunstefees (KKNK) visual arts programme this year, Liza Grobler brings a considered selection of that work to Cape Town in a new exhibition presented by Spier Arts Trust (SAT) and hosted at HUB Gallery in Cape Town. The show, titled ‘’n Greep uit Grenslose Gesprekke’ (a phrase, translating as ‘A Byte from Limitless Conversations’, presented at the KKNK theme ‘Dialogues across Place and Time’), draws from the curatorial framework that shaped this year’s KKNK visual arts programme, which took place from 28 March to 4 April 2026. At the festival, this took the form of 22 distinct visual arts projects spanning installation, video, painting and site-specific work. The HUB Gallery exhibition is a distilled continuation of that offering: a selection of works brought together for how they speak to one another across differences. At its core is an interest in connection, not through similarity, but through contrast. ‘What began in the Karoo as a wide-ranging conversation now shifts into a city context,’ Grobler explains. ‘By selecting works that remain in dialogue with one another, the exhibition becomes a kind of mobile version, a way of carrying that conversation forward, [...]

Botanical illustration is a universally loved artform. The works in this permanent collection not only accurately represent the appearance, structure and anatomy of plants, they are breathtakingly beautiful. Botanical art allows plants that are seasonal or seasonally dormant to be appreciated throughout the year. Since 2023 Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden (SUBG) has been holding an annual botanical art exhibition, encouraging the best artists to work with our most important plant collections. Generous donors have contributed works to our permanent collection, showcasing the best of South African botanical art, and raising the profile of our most threatened and interesting plant accessions. This project gives botanical artists access to live, rare material, and important scientific data – a unique situation which Annerie Senekal and Razelle Gallant have managed gracefully. We also trained three art interns to help with the gallery change over, facilitate sales and to meet and greet our many visitors. Through this florilegium or permanent collection, working in conjunction with the Red Data list, and identifying either rare and endangered or previously undocumented plants, we will connect visitors to the phenomenal diversity of threatened South African plants. Helping us to shift public perception about the value of wild areas for [...]

In a world sodden with images, opinions and noise, Cape Town–based artist Tanja Truscott is asking something quieter of us: to look, to pause…and to feel. Running at Sisonke Gallery from 03 March to 31 May 2026, ‘Without Words’ is her new solo exhibition of abstract drawings on paper, presented by House Union Block (HUB). Truscott was a Nando’s Creative Exchange (NCX) participant in 2024 and the exhibition extends the support and momentum fostered through the programme, which is facilitated by HUB. The show offers a considered counterpoint to the speed and noise of contemporary visual culture, inviting viewers to spend time with work that resists explanation and rewards stillness. Rather than drawing with pencil, Truscott uses oil paint on carefully prepared paper, allowing the linework to take centre stage. Some drawings hold faint traces of real-world references (a garden, a figure, a place), while others emerge without any external reference at all. In these works, line becomes an expression of feeling rather than depiction. ‘The title “Without Words” reflects how I hope the exhibition is experienced,’ says Truscott. ‘It doesn’t ask the viewer to understand or decode anything. It simply invites them to be open to what they see [...]

At the heart of Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront, a vibrant cohort of creators is shaping more than just clay, they’re shaping futures. Zizamele Ceramics has transformed the art of pottery into a platform for opportunity and empowerment. Their impactful work has won them the 2025 Empowerment Award at the annual V&A Waterfront Neighbourhood Awards, a benchmark of the best in retail. Art educator Toni Burton founded Zizamele (a Zulu word meaning to do something for yourself) in 2008 with a mission to help local women turn their artistic talent into opportunity. After training the first cohort through an 18-month craft production course, she helped them build sustainable livelihoods. Today, the collective’s handmade, colourful ceramics are exported globally, with each artisan developing her own style along the way. Their signature creation, the Ubuntu Bowl, comprises a circle of friendship featuring clay figures holding hands around the rim. This iconic design, first created by ceramicist Sisanda Mbana, has become synonymous with Zizamele’s mission of community and empowerment. Mbana’s artistry has been recognised with numerous accolades, including her first award at the Ceramics SA Regionals Exhibition in 2008, and her work has been acquired by the Iziko South African National Gallery. Her Ubuntu [...]

Now in its second year, the V&A Waterfront Neighbourhood Awards will once again be presenting bespoke pieces of art to celebrate retail excellence among tenants. From ancient laurel wreaths and polished pewter cups to contemporary forms, trophies have always symbolised achievement, identity and shared values. Just like a flag, a trophy is an ideological marker: its design says as much about an era and institution as the achievement it represents. At the V&A Waterfront, this symbolism is reimagined through the annual Neighbourhood Awards, which commissions trophies that are works of art crafted by leading local makers and which are deeply rooted in the precinct’s purpose-led philosophy. ‘The trophy becomes a symbol of shared purpose,’ says Mandla Mkhwebane, Senior Marketing Manager: B2C and CX at the V&A Waterfront. ‘It honours the retailer, but also the creative talent that defines our precinct. It’s recognition with ripple effects.’ In 2024, the V&A Waterfront began this journey by commissioning Diana George of Lerato Design Consultancy to envision a collection of bespoke ceramic trophies made by a group of Cape Town-based creatives: award-winning ceramicist Clementina van der Walt, known for her bold use of colour and pattern; N’Sele Adonis Mumpango, whose hand-engraved lines and textured [...]

For the very first time, Fish Hoek’s iconic department store AP Jones, the valley’s beloved 97-year-old family-run business, will explode with creativity as its front windows are transformed into a stunning, large-scale art installation. This bold display will be visible at street level and is designed to engage shoppers, pedestrians and passing traffic on Fish Hoek’s Main Road. The installation will be unveiled in phases, starting from 19 September 2025, and forms part of the build-up to the inaugural Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly (OSFHC), which takes place from 3 to 5 October 2025. The installation is a collaborative effort organised by participating OSFHC artists Lauren Shantall, Sue Kaplan and Yda Walt and jointly conceptualised by Walt (who is a celebrated textile artist and screen-printer) and Kaplan (who is a curator, painter and teacher). The installation includes the direct involvement of Susan Didcott, Marlise Keith, Leila and Emma Rowett, Sasha Scholtz and others, with the enthusiastic support of the AP Jones team. Additionally, all 19 artists that are part of OSFHC will contribute self-portraits in the medium of their choice that will form part of the installation. Screen-printed images on calico fabric, created in Walt’s studio, form the heart [...]

The inaugural edition of Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly (OSFHC) will take place over the weekend of 3-5 October 2025, featuring 19 artists in 15 studio sites across four different routes. This is a chance to make connections, meet artists in person, explore the area and see some inspiring work, from paintings to ceramics to sculpture, papermaking to illustration, stitching, mosaics and more. ‘We have long admired other Deep South Open Studios, such as those in Noordhoek and Kommetjie, and we realised it was time to crank up the volume in our neck of the woods too, to show the world the depth and breadth of talent living this side of the peninsula,’ says the organisers. ‘In the past, Fish Hoek and Clovelly had a reputation as a bit of a sleepy hollow, a former dry suburb that is more of a retirement village than anything else, but a lot is happening here, and there are incredibly talented artists and makers who live here and who want to open their studios, homes and hearts to everyone to honour all that this area is and all that it can become.’ The event is free, and guests can visit as many [...]

Timed to run over Heritage Month, Sisonke Gallery hosts an exhibition that reflects on Cape Malay identity. This is the second iteration of A Glimpse Between Memoirs, a powerful joint exhibition by artists Shaunez Benting and Whaleed Ahjum, which was previously exhibited at the Bo-Kaap Cultural Hub in February 2024. The show is presented in collaboration with Our Cape Town Heritage (OCTH), an NPO that is committed to protecting, promoting and preserving heritage and culture by exploring visual art and history through education, and is curated by Aaliyah Ahmed. Through childhood memories and the echoes of apartheid, A Glimpse Between Memoirs explores the tension between history and speculation. Drawing on nostalgia, not as escapism but as a critical lens, the artists investigate how the stories we inherit (and the ones we choose to tell) shape the futures we dare to imagine, shining a light on how art can disrupt the status quo and honour ancestral legacies while opening up space for future possibility. Benting’s work reanimates the marginalised spaces of his youth through vibrant composite visuals that blur memory and imagination. Ahjum, whose practice is grounded in research and oil painting, delves into his Southeast Asian roots to uncover cultural [...]

Cape Town’s HUB Gallery is hosting a 2 month-long exhibition of 60 outstanding portraits selected from the Portrait 100 Award 2025 finalists. The show opens 30 August and runs until 29 October 2025, giving audiences the opportunity to experience a diverse range of contemporary portraiture. The prestigious Portrait Award is a biennial national competition presented by Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville. Launched in 2013, it has grown to become one of South Africa’s most significant platforms for representational art – art that portrays recognisable objects, figures or scenes from the real world – celebrating technical excellence, narrative depth and emotional power in the medium of portraiture. The 100 best portraits are selected from the entries received, from which the Top 40, Top 5, Top 3 and overall winning portraits are chosen. The Top 40 portraits will be exhibited at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, while HUB Gallery will support the Portrait 100 Award exhibition by presenting the remaining 60 works. All are for sale to the public. This year’s finalists were chosen by a panel of respected industry experts: Dr Dineke Orton, art historian, researcher and the curator of the University of Johannesburg Art Gallery; artist and entrepreneur Thonton Kubeya; and journalist, art critic [...]

This Heritage Month head out to Spier Wine Farm’s historic Old Wine Cellar for ‘Grounded Practice’ – a landmark ceramics exhibition on until 12 October 2025. Curated by Tamlin Blake, Chief Curator at Spier Arts Trust, the exhibition features 63 ceramic artworks by 42 artists from across South Africa – each one thoughtfully selected to explore themes of stability, sustainability, and self-reflection. ‘Grounded Practice’ offers more than a showcase of beautiful objects, it’s a timely conversation about what it means to feel rooted in a world of change. Rather than dictate a theme from the outset, Blake waited to see what ideas emerged organically from the artists’ submissions. “What came through, almost overwhelmingly, was a sense of instability – personally, politically, environmentally,” she explains. “Many artists were using their practice to find their footing again, to reestablish a sense of balance and belonging. That’s where the title ‘Grounded Practice’ comes from.” The Power of Clay Central to this year’s exhibition is the material itself. “Clay is a potent and enduring material in human civilisation,” Blake explains. “It’s often seen as a metaphor for creativity, malleability, and human potential. But once it’s fired and becomes ceramic, it also represents permanence and [...]
