South Africa’s Oldest Grill Room and Cookery School Continue Their 5-Year Legacy of Hosting The Steak Masterclass Series

Do you know why you should let steak “rest” before you cut it? Or the difference between “blue” and “rare”?

To reveal the answers to these questions along with other secrets of the steak, South Africa’s premier grill room, The Hussar Grill, will be sharing some of the expertise behind its successful 55-year legacy in a series of Steak Masterclasses. Aspirant cooks and foodies are welcome to attend these stand-alone evening events, which will be held in a professional kitchen at the prestigious Silwood School of Cookery in Cape Town, South Africa’s oldest cookery school.

T-bone Steak

The idea to host the Steak Masterclass series was conceived in 2014, in honour of The Hussar Grill and Silwood School of Cookery’s 50-year milestone. Today, each Steak Masterclass is hosted by Jason Allen, the owner of The Hussar Grill restaurant in Steenberg, and cover the preparation of three choice cuts of beef, namely, sirloin, rump and fillet. For those not yet in the know, sirloin and fillet can be cooked quickly and served very rare, while rump – South Africa’s most popular steak – can be fried or grilled more slowly.

In addition to learning how to grill a steak to the rare or medium stage, the classes will cover how to wet-age meat at home and provide tips on barbequing (“braaiing”) and stovetop grilling. As a fitting accompaniment to the steaks, participants will be taught how to prepare a classic Béarnaise Sauce and a creamy Pepper Sauce – both perennial favourites at The Hussar Grill. The secret recipe for The Hussar Grill’s very own basting sauce will also be yours for the keeping.

Not only do participants get to prepare and cook the steaks, they also get to sample their triumphs along the way. As soon as each steak and its accompanying sauce is ready, guests get to enjoy the spoils while the steaks are still hot. To wash it all down in style, Ernst Gouws & Co. will keep your glasses full of a selection of their premium wines. It’s best to come hungry!

The cost to attend a Steak Masterclass is R650 per person. The classes are approximately three hours in duration and run from 18h30 to 21h30. There is ample off-street parking at the Silwood School of Cookery, which is located at 40 Riverton Road in Rondebosch, Cape Town (cnr of Riverton and Silwood Roads).
