With large-scale public artworks located anywhere from Azerbaijan to Brighton, the internationally recognised and locally celebrated street artist, r1. is set to be 100% Design South Africa’s first-ever Feature Artist of the Year for 2019. This Johannesburg-based visionary is known for striking and vibrant artworks that are showcased in and around a city’s built environment. He refers to his pieces as ‘urban interventions’ that generate dialogue and serve as a means of engagement with the general public. r1. uses a combination of found materials and repurposed objects to create interactive art pieces that change the city’s streets. His work embraces a dynamic sense of geometry and the unexpected use of reclaimed wood, street signs, barrier tape and other unusual materials. These astonishing pieces grace the corners of buildings, fences, abandoned buildings, high-rise walls… anywhere, really. He honed his signature style on the streets of London and Brighton, first catching the attention of the publilc around 2011. Having left his mark on the UK landscape, he returned to Johannesburg to pave a new pathway of opportunity, envisioning the City of Gold as a fresh canvas. Since his return to South Africa he has created a repertoire of temporary works and third [...]

The centrepiece of 100% Design South Africa each year is its carefully curated and collaborative feature stands. The show holds innovation and a desire to constantly strive for newness at its core, so each year the creative director duo of Cathy O’Clery and Laurence Brick drives exciting product launches and catalyses engaging spaces from the designers invited to take part in these dynamic features. This year is no exception. With a roster that’s arguably stronger than ever and that demonstrates the sheer wealth of talent there is in this country, the 100% Design South Africa features will prove a worthy showcase for the various creatives at their helm. We’d like to introduce the star lineup for 2019: Feature Designer: Laduma Ngxokolo Multi-disciplinary talent Laduma Ngxokolo of Maxhosa comes on board as 2019’s Feature Designer of the Year. Known for his dynamic and contemporary interpretation of traditional motifs, he’s put local talent on the world stage and reoriented an African aesthetic in a new light. At the show he will demonstrate his creative prowess with homeware that channels a contemporary African aesthetic and his innate understanding of colour and pattern. You can expect anything from rugs, cushions and throws, to upholstery [...]

Expect no run-of-the-mill fare at this year’s 100% Design South Africa pavilion at Decorex Cape Town, running from 1-5 May 2019 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC) and organised by the globe’s leading exhibitions company, Reed Exhibitions. Aptly entitled 100% Extraordinary, this display of ultra-unusual designer products and pieces is a collaboration between Platform, the curators of 100% Design South Africa and a selection of leading local brands, in an effort to push design beyond the bounds of the ordinary. Under the theme Botanical Office, 100% Extraordinary explores the concept of an office space that offers an antidote to the norm. ‘The botanical theme is a no-brainer for me,’ says Creative Director of 100% Design South Africa, Cathy O’Clery, ‘I feel people have a huge desire to connect with nature these days and I see no reason why this can’t come into a workplace. Cape Town is a beautiful city surrounded by the most extraordinary nature – there is no reason not to bring that into a space where we spend the majority of our time.’ Office spaces today need to be practical and hardwearing without being hard-lined or sterile. In line with this thinking, the Botanical Office [...]

Introductions and innovations make this year’s show the most exciting yet This year marks the fifth installment of 100% Design South Africa – the country’s premier design show, organised by Reed Exhibitions and curated by Platform Creative Agency. Opening this week, Wednesday 8 August and running until Sunday 12 August, the show will bring the best residential, office and hospitality design by leading local talents and international brands together under one roof, in a dynamic showcase of design excellence. Each year 100% Design South Africa serves as an opportunity for exhibitors to expand their audiences and an ideal platform from which to launch fresh new products and collections – always a highlight of the programme. A result of creative directors Cathy O’Clery and Laurence Brick’s innovative approach, the show aims to inspire and educate through interactive experiences and exhibits that are curated in such a way as to engage the audience. O’Clery believes that South African designers’ strong narrative and sense of soul sets them apart on a global stage. “The South African design industry has an otherness shaped by its diversity, cultural value and enterprising identity,” she comments on the ever-evolving and growing variety of products on show.
Internationally acclaimed and locally heralded ceramicist, Majolandile ‘Andile’ Dyalvane, is the Feature Designer of the Year for 100% Design South Africa 2018, in partnership with Elle Decoration magazine. Cape Town-based Dyalvane will be showcasing his extraordinary talent and exhibiting 100 Beautiful Bowls made from clay that pay homage to the four elements of life: earth, water, fire and air. “Clay breathes, it’s alive with becoming and moves with my energy, listens and holds only what I’ve impressed upon it – it remembers and let’s go in the fire then becomes stronger. If clay were a song it would sing of the layers of life really,” Dyalvane says. It’s this passion for his craft and clay as a medium that secured his centenary of bowls exhibition at 100% Design South Africa. Each year the award-winning show selects and invites a designer to put together a solo featured exhibition and this year, Dyalvane was chosen for his clout in ceramics and creativity that will place his many bowl creations – showing the possibilities of his craft – firmly on the design menu. He has actively contributed to the medium of clay and the ceramic creative community not only in South Africa, but [...]
