Over 80 portraits form the opening show at the new Jaffer Modern art gallery in Green Point, Cape Town and these proverbial “windows into the soul” are set to captivate viewers. Entitled Gathering: A Community of Portraits the exhibition showcases the many faces of Africa. “This first exhibition aims to showcase a diverse outpouring of creativity,” says the show’s guest curator Margie Murgatroyd of Africa Nova. After seeking out artists from across the continent and looking beyond, to the African diaspora, Murgatroyd has selected works hailing from as far afield Tanzania, Kenya, Nigeria and right across South Africa, from KwaZulu-Natal to Gauteng. As a result, the new show makes for fascinating viewing. The works on the show are wide-ranging, but are linked by a central theme. According to gallery director Shafina Jaffer: “The theme refers to the deep human need to congregate and the desire to commune. It is about our diversity, cultures and common humanity.” Gathering opened to the public on 21 December 2020 and runs until 28 February 2021. Expect to see anything from painting to photography to sculpture. The artists featured include South African Masters such as Cecile Skotnes and Peter Clarke and contemporary artists such as [...]

The start of a new decade has brought with it a wave of inspiration, and with that a collection of new designs from renowned South African lighting company willowlamp. The Radial is one of the new pieces making its design debut this year. In the spirit of evolution, founder and creative director Adam Hoets has built on some of his existing designs with new interpretations stemming from these existing pieces. ‘The Radial is a logical extension of the Lineal – essentially a round version of this piece,’ says Hoets. The Lineal – one of the brand’s most contemporary and more recent pieces, plays with a more minimal and pared-down aesthetic, an example of how the designer has steadily developed willowlamp’s identity. The inspiration behind the Radial hails from a similar source to the Lineal – which comes from the idea of creating a textured grid around a repetitive matrix of lights, and adding chain in layers and in different metallic finishes to add a richness and warm glow. Like virtually all of willowlamp’s pieces, The Radial also draws on the natural world. ‘The Radial refers to the eternal, cyclic ring of life,’ says Hoets. The pervasive popularity of curvaceous shapes [...]

AAAA, a co-operation of artisans from Mali, is launching a pop-up exhibition of contemporary African designs based on traditional techniques in collaboration with Cécile & Boyd. The display will run at Cécile & Boyd’s landmark Kloof Nek Road destination in Cape Town, presenting an opportunity for local interior designers, decorators and art lovers to experience leading decorative homeware from the continent. The pop-up will open to the public from 26 February 2020 onwards and will run for two weeks. AAAA and Cecile & Boyd will present a concise collection of handcrafted Textile Totems that will be showcased to the South African market for the first time. Playing on a love of symbolism and design, AAAA stands for Atelier Autodidacts Anti-Algorithms. The co-op aims to celebrate traditional artisanal methods, which includes championing the original Malian textile artform of Bogolan. Bogolan (which means made of mud) is a traditional handmade Malian cotton fabric (called finimugu) that is dyed with fermented mud. AAAA incorporates Bogolan, also known as Bògòlanfini, into their designs and textures, and it is some of these works that will be shown in Cape Town. Visitors can expect to see an edited selection of striking Textile Totems in eight distinct [...]

Jeanne Gang is one of the most important architects of her generation. She was named one of the 100 most influential people of 2019 by TIME magazine and 2016 Woman Architect of the Year by Architectural Review, and has been awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship for her work. Her award-winning multidisciplinary practice, Studio Gang, is driven by an ethos of ‘actionable idealism’ and is concerned with how to make cities more livable, with an emphasis on sustainability. Excited to push the boundaries of what architecture can achieve, Gang likes to improve upon the built environment in ways that are focused on people and that encourage community-building. Her Aqua Tower – the tallest woman-designed building in the world when completed in 2010, an accolade soon to be surpassed by her nearby Vista Tower, now under construction – is an 82-storey undulating skyscraper that received the Emporis Skyscraper Award as skyscraper of the year in 2009 and was recently named one of the most important buildings of the decade by Dwell. Firm-wide recognitions include the National Design Award for Architecture Design from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in 2013 and an Architizer A+ award in 2016. With offices in Chicago, New York, [...]

Stellenbosch Triennale takes great pleasure in announcing the first 20 participating artists for its inaugural edition, taking place from 11 February to 30 April 2020 at destinations in Stellenbosch. The list reads like a who’s who of contemporary art from African, now. Given the status of the 20 artists on the official selection of the Triennale, the event promises to be one of distinction and inspiration, quite unlike anything that Stellenbosch has seen before. The curator’s exhibition curated by Chief Curator Khanyisile Mbongwa with Triennale curator: Bernard Akoi-Jackson draws from the Triennale’s overarching theme Tomorrow There will Be More of Us. The exhibition will present contemporary art from African in a critical dialogue with the society that fosters and exhibits it. The list of African artists selected by Mbongwa, with her co-curators, informs the major theme. Artists are set to present works that investigate the possibility of healing through engaging with the divided past, the collective present and imagined futures. Responding to the nature of the collective destined for the curator’s exhibition, Mbongwa says, “African creatives confront us with what is possible for a renewal to happen utilising art as a lens, a course correction, a stimuli around curiosity and [...]

The Stellenbosch Triennale, happening in venues across the historic town from 11 February to 30 April 2020, draws in the continent’s important curators to present programmes interlocking with and at many levels of artistic achievement. On The Cusp is not just an exhibition of emergent artistic or related practices, but presents the work of a number of exciting new artists within the larger Stellenbosch Triennale. Conceptually, On The Cusp references the idea of the accumulated potential that an individual or generation possesses at a crucial interval of time – just before the onset of something great. The exhibition is one of the Triennale’s identifying exhibitions – a core part of the programme, initiated by Chief Curator Khanyisile Mbongwa. Curated by contemporary Ghanaian curator, artist and writer Bernard Akoi-Jackson, On The Cusp takes into account future possibilities by engaging with new artists set to innovate in the African scene to come, as well as on the world stage. The exhibition follows the ethos of the Triennale as it ventures beyond the confines of the traditional, exposing fresh practices — aesthetic, conceptual, critical or material. Akoi-Jackson has upon the advice of a network of colleague practitioners across the continent, selected ten African [...]

The Stellenbosch Triennale 2020, brainchild of the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust, takes place from 11 February to 30 April 2020 and will present a remarkable collection of artistic talents to construct an event in which contemporary African art will hold a critical dialogue with the society that fosters and exhibits it. The theme Tomorrow There Will Be More of Us, which was conceived by Chief Curator and Artistic Director Khanyisile Mbongwa, runs as a thread throughout the seven multidisciplinary platforms. All will provide meeting points for engagement with the divided past, the collective present and imagined futures. The curator’s exhibition has been conceived by Mbongwa, with co-curator Bernard Akoi-Jackson. It will feature 20 multidisciplinary artists, from a range of African countries. On the list, selected by the curatorial team, are some of the world’s most revered artists whose works are situated at the borderline between avant-garde and mainstream: Conceptualist and sculptor Ibrahim Mahama (Ghana), Visual artist Sethembile Msezane (South Africa) and filmmaker Kivu Ruhorahoza (Rwanda) – to name a few. Mbongwa sees the theme, and participants, as being part of a unfolding narrative. “For me, Tomorrow There Will Be More of Us is about imagining (and creating) common sustainable futures [...]

The upcoming international showcase, extraordinary in terms of international reach and extent of art on show, will place creativity in critical dialogue with the society that fosters and exhibits it.
