Inhouse Brand Architects was commissioned by owners Dani and Alan Pick to redesign the interiors of the original Butcher Shop & Grill, situated on Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, Johannesburg, after the team successfully designed the interiors of the restaurant’s first Cape Town branch. The Sandton refurbishment was carried out by Inhouse’s Gauteng office. Director, Lawrence Holmes, Creative Director, Aidan Hart, and Associate Director, Cara Masureik, led the project. Their solution for Sandton marries the traditional feel of the Sandton branch with the modern aesthetic of the Cape Town outlet. Inhouse was asked to replace the existing interiors with more modern elements mixed with handcrafted pieces and to create a new open-plan environment. The original ‘glass-box’ area of the restaurant was given an overhaul, while the rest of the restaurant will be completed in a phase-by-phase approach in 2016. This allows the restaurant to continue to trade without having to disappoint customers and shut completely during the refurbishment. The newly redesigned area displays elements that reflect The Butcher Shop & Grill brand. The floors, which are laid with timber-patterned porcelain tiles, and the columns, which carry green glazed metro tile cladding, are noticeable design elements. Marbled walls, brass detailing, steel, [...]

Led by Inhouse Brand Architects’ director, Aidan Hart, the re-design of John Brown Media’s premises aims to increase connectivity among staff members while aligning the physical environment with John Brown’s charged work ethic and creative output. The new space incorporates John Brown’s corporate colour, teal, which is uplifted by vibrant yellow, and expands on the company’s informal bird theme motifs that were in place in the previous offices. A stylish yet lighthearted Scandinavian aesthetic runs throughout. Once past the reception area, the offices open into a shared space that includes an open-plan kitchen with a breakaway dining table and seating. Directly opposite the kitchen and table is a series of three eating pods featuring high-back booth seating in the company’s signature teal. Because of its proximity to the kitchen, the booths have successfully enabled staff to socialise and engage with one another while grabbing a bite to eat. Beyond the kitchen and dining area lies a lounge area or indoor ‘campsite’. The ‘campsite’ is kitted out with faux grass, picnic-like seating, timber plant boxes and canary yellow wooden tree-trunks. Brightly hued lounge seating, a cartoon-covered ‘bed’ and birdcage light fixtures add delightful visual fodder. The nod to the outside world [...]

A new set of opulent GH Mumm Outdoor Lounges perfectly complements the glamorous nautical experience to be had at Shimmy Beach Club, an upmarket entertainment destination at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. Showcasing charming Catamaran-styled features, the lounges were designed for luxurious summer partying. The GH Mumm lounges were commissioned by Pernod Ricard and created by brand experience experts NightVision, sister company to leading interiors firm Inhouse Brand Architects. Thanks to creative input from Inhouse’s award-winning Creative Director, Aidan Hart, the GH Mumm lounges are more than just easy on the eye, boasting plenty of practical design elements. The outside frames can easily be disassembled and re-assembled – so that the lounges can be moved around quickly and easily – and consist of waterproof aluminum. Reconstructed plastic composite was used to create a sleek faux timber look for the floors with the benefit of being stain and rot resistant – an added bonus when being so close to the sea and the corrosive salt air. The lounge “roof” consists of a stretched canopy, creating a yacht-like look, complemented by high-end yachting fabric used for the upholstery. The curtains feature striking GH Mumm branding were designed for privacy and to provide shade. [...]

When the Bouma family wanted to reinvent the existing restaurant on their wine farm Anura, they enlisted the help of Creative Director Aidan Hart of Inhouse Brand Architects and his wife Brenda Hart of 89 Interior Design to bring their vision to life. What was previously a more formal and traditional restaurant, Wagon Trail Brewery, has been transformed into a directional and contemporary destination that houses a new 500litre microbrewery. In addition to the brewery and brewer’s laboratory in full view of visitors, an on-site deli is near to completion and will make Anura’s own wines and cheeses available alongside a selection of fine cuts of meat from 12 Pigs charcuterie. The brewery itself features a variety of lagers and ales brewed by Lance Bouma. “I always wanted to try brewing beer and after seeing the craft beer equipment at a show overseas, I took the plunge and ordered it,” he explains. “There was a lot of brainstorming about where to put the brewery and how to sell the beer,” he continues. “We then had the idea of closing our original restaurant, and starting afresh – with the brewery, wines, cheeses and charcuterie being the focal point of the restaurant.
The industrial look has long been a design staple. In recent years, as the cultural trend has shifted towards an increased green awareness, natural and organic finishes have to come to the fore in interiors. With their interior scheme and exterior treatment for new restaurant Bocca, on Bree St in Cape Town, Inhouse Brand Architects has successfully fused these two aesthetic directions to present an “organic industrial” look that is both appealing and up-to-the-minute. The functional severity of the industrial look is warmed and softened by the use of natural materials. It’s all very now – and wow! Bocca is the latest venture of well-known food and wine fundi Neil Grant, with his business partner Barry Engelbrecht. Grant’s other establishment, the award-winning Burrata, which is located in Cape Town’s Biscuit Mill, was also designed by Inhouse. This time round, Inhouse Creative Director Aidan Hart and designers Ernst Frame-Tolmie and Becky Kriedemann took their cue from the bustling Bree St dynamic, and neighbouring haunts, before framing their design solution. A hipster playground, Bree St attracts a sophisticated urban set and plays home to destination stores and trendy restaurants. Bocca’s Interior But Bocca is set to please.
Carne on Keerom Street is a favourite amongst discerning Capetonian diners. So much so, that its ongoing popularity meant that celebrity chef Giorgio Nava was constantly turning away prospective customers from an already full restaurant. Because of this, Nava approached Inhouse Brand Architects, the design team behind all of his projects, to design a second branch of Carne – the now equally bustling Carne on Kloof. Aidan Hart, the Creative Director of Inhouse, focused on mirroring the quiet design elements of the original Carne on Keerom Street, while preserving the existing architectural features of the new Victorian locale, to create a proud extension of Nava’s authentic Italian gastronomic philosophy. For the original and first Carne, Inhouse focused on creating a warm and simple reincarnation of Milanese élan. For Carne on Kloof, Inhouse kept to this same ‘blueprint’ by using natural design elements. Raw Orgeon pine clads the walls of this inviting space and exposed brick-walls act as a textured signifier. Intimate lighting – again a feature of Carne on Keerom Street – reinforces the romantic spirit of this environment. Additional notes of warmth are woven through the space by preserving the original Victorian fireplace, timber floors and high ceilings. These authentic touches [...]

In December 2014, a chic Absolut Vodka outdoor lounge area was installed in the courtyard of premium entertainment venue Zone 6, and is proving to be uber popular with socialites. Zone 6 is set in an industrial warehouse, in Diepkloof, Soweto, where the massive building is able to accommodate a few thousand guests. The outdoor lounge was completed by brand experience experts NightVision, the sister company to leading interior design firm, Inhouse Brand Architects. NightVision was commissioned to create the lounge by ongoing client Pernod Ricard. NightVision’s design concept fixated on the corporate colours of Absolut Vodka, with blue as the core of the scheme, and accents of white, grey and black running throughout, to keep the brand identity prominent. The courtyard walls were spray painted by a local graffiti artist selected by the venue owner, to create various and contrasting points of interest. A modular outdoor seating system was installed, complete with bespoke upholstery. Custom-made tables in the form of Absolut Vodka bottles were specially manufactured for external use. NightVision also successfully refurbished the external bar area. Creative Director Aidan Hart and lead designer Cara Siegers added a new decorative element to beautify the metal grille that protects [...]
