Premise behind the ‘The Plot’ Worldwide calls for increased social distancing is not decreasing our social-ness. What is changing however, is the means through which we are engaging with each other, and where we are able to do that from. Whilst artists and institutions around the world are quickly adapting to a new online area, what is the response of the architects/ Architecture? Furthermore how are the everyday changes, being ushered in by the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting architectural discourse? The PLOT is the virtual gallery space created by theMAAK and ssoft_stuff that aims to try and address this. Hosting unique online happenings and immersive exhibitions, The PLOT welcomes the global online community to collectively question, comment, and consciously participate in the contemporary renegotiation of the spaces around us and how we choose to interact with them. Working together, the creators of The Plot have launched this new online public space with an ongoing interactive exhibition called ‘Inside <> Out’. This unique online enquiry questions the new role interiors are playing in our global everyday. More below… Visit the Plot here The Plot’s inaugural exhibition: ‘Inside <> Out ‘ ‘Inside <> Out’ contemplates the peculiarity of the domestic interior today.* Our [...]

Architect Daniel van der Merwe interviews Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu, the founders of architectural design practice Neri & Hu, who spoke at Design Indaba 2020. “Style changes, but if the idea of what you are creating is there, it will last a lifetime. We always like this quote by Antoine de Saint-Exupéry: ‘We do not aspire to be eternal beings. We only hope that things do not lose their meaning.’” – Rosanna Hu I recently had the privilege to sit down and chat to the architectural powerhouses behind the brand Neri & Hu: Shanghai-based husband and wife Lyndon Neri and Rossana Hu. The duo spoke about their practice and their design philosophy at Design Indaba on 27 February 2020, and I met them after their wildly popular presentation. Neri & Hu’s architecture is hauntingly poetic – it demonstrates an innate apprehension of beauty derived from experiencing a connection to space. “We believe that materials should relate to the human condition,” Rosanna Hu told me. “They are there not only for visual pleasure, but for a tactile connection to the spaces.” This careful, investigative approach and sensitivity to inviting and tactile materials deliver the rich and immersive experiences for which [...]

Jeanne Gang is one of the most important architects of her generation. She was named one of the 100 most influential people of 2019 by TIME magazine and 2016 Woman Architect of the Year by Architectural Review, and has been awarded a prestigious MacArthur Fellowship for her work. Her award-winning multidisciplinary practice, Studio Gang, is driven by an ethos of ‘actionable idealism’ and is concerned with how to make cities more livable, with an emphasis on sustainability. Excited to push the boundaries of what architecture can achieve, Gang likes to improve upon the built environment in ways that are focused on people and that encourage community-building. Her Aqua Tower – the tallest woman-designed building in the world when completed in 2010, an accolade soon to be surpassed by her nearby Vista Tower, now under construction – is an 82-storey undulating skyscraper that received the Emporis Skyscraper Award as skyscraper of the year in 2009 and was recently named one of the most important buildings of the decade by Dwell. Firm-wide recognitions include the National Design Award for Architecture Design from the Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in 2013 and an Architizer A+ award in 2016. With offices in Chicago, New York, [...]

The winners of the architectural competition for the new Neuländer Quarree precinct in Hamburg have been announced. The jury awarded SAOTA – an architecture and design firm from Cape Town, South Africa, BeL Architecture from Cologne and ROBERTNEUN Architects from Berlin. The brief was to provide design concepts for five components of a site of approximately 44 000 m² set within the formerly industrial context of Harburg inland port in Hamburg, Germany. The project developer CG Gruppe AG sought outstanding designs that were architecturally, functionally, ecologically and economically mature and aimed at promoting long-term commitment to future residents and users. SAOTA were announced as winners of the Residential Apartment building A1, a mixed-use building including rental apartments, restaurants and retail. The jury commented that “SAOTA’s design stood out for its abundance of ideas, its strong interior and exterior reference and orientation to the water.” “Our approach begins with creating an active streetscape providing rich interactions between the architecture and the site for residents and visitors alike. Combined with an architecture which is dynamic and clearly rooted in the historic context – SAOTA’s design will contribute to the architectural quality and the long-term success and desirability of the development,” Christoph Gröner, CEO [...]

Goodman Gallery Cape Town 5 September – 10 October 2015 Exhibition opening Saturday 5 September at 11:00 Walkabout with the artist at 12:00 In her forthcoming solo exhibition, TESTIMONY, the first in South Africa and on the continent, Adejoke Tugbiyele speaks to her personal experience and the lived and imagined experiences of all Nigerians, regardless of gender and sexual orientation. She takes as her motivation the fact that many Nigerians and other Africans cannot survive each day without dreaming of being elsewhere – somewhere far away. For example, Nigerians and other Africans migrate to places like South Africa for survival and freedom – including the freedom to love – managing existing trauma amid fears of xenophobia in a country still healing from its own apartheid past. Tugbiyele notes that her fellow Nigerians use various means to acquire the necessary documentation to allow them to travel, taking steps that are dangerous and often placing them at odds with the law. Prostitution and sex work is common among both straight and gay people, because it is viewed as a means to success or a way out of the country. These are acts of survival given the conditions that cause Africans to risk [...]
