Abandon Netflix and take to the streets of Cape Town for the ultimate screening experiences, performances and installations this May and June! The longest-running public arts festival in South Africa, Infecting the City, renamed (Un)Infecting the City for this year, offers a unique opportunity to bring art, music, dance and performance out of theatres and galleries and into public spaces. The 2021 festival, presented by the University of Cape Town’s Institute for Creative Arts (ICA), upholds its public-hearted spirit, but has updated its format to allow for social distancing. In previous years, the festival has reimagined transport and shopping hubs, squares, gardens and public walkways as transformative stages. It showcased an array of multi-disciplinary art forms, and created a platform for artworks that engage with historical and contemporary narratives relevant to the city and its people. As South Africa grapples with the COVID-19 pandemic, and more recently, the fires in Cape Town and at UCT, this year’s (Un)Infecting the City will have a thematic focus on the psychological and social impacts of this time. COVID-19 in itself has led to a dramatic loss of human life nationwide, and the beginning of 2021, in particular, has seen many people having to come to terms [...]

The Stellenbosch Triennale, brainchild of the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust, takes place from 11 February to 30 April 2020 in a location renowned for its halls of academia and historical vineyards. The upcoming international showcase, extraordinary in terms of international reach and extent of art on show, will place creativity in critical dialogue with the society that fosters and exhibits it. The theme Tomorrow There Will Be More of Us informs the further seven multidisciplinary platforms – that provide meeting points for engagement with the divided past, the collective present and imagined futures. The Curators’ Exhibition compiled by Chief Curator Khanyisile Mbongwa, with Triennale co-curator: Bernard Akoi-Jackson will feature 20 artists from a range of African countries, and will interpret the theme. The multidisciplinary art exhibition situated inside The Woodmill and on the surrounding precinct will provide a gateway where visitors will be introduced to the Triennale’s other exhibitions and installations. According to Chief Curator Mbongwa, “African creatives confront us with what is possible for a renewal to happen utilising art as a lens, a course correction, a stimulus around curiosity and imagination. Through the Triennale, we bring work from the continent to the southernmost tip as an intersection of [...]

A leading Durban interior designer driven by the satisfaction of his clients, Frans Alexander of Frans Alexander Interiors describes himself as a perfectionist: ‘I’m driven by the result and outcome of each project. Knowing that I have achieved the desired emotion is what pushes me to ensure every one of my clients’ experiences the sense of joy design can bring!’ Frans Alexander Interiors was founded in 2002 and the company works across Residential, Hospitality and Commercial projects. All projects tend to be led by a feeling, an ethos, rather than an aesthetic. ‘I believe that the key to each successful interior lies in the details and it’s there where I like to invest a lot of effort in order to achieve a well-executed space. The small details are what elicit an emotional response from a space,’ he notes. Over and above his own vision however, the designer aims with each project to reflect the client’s own viewpoint. ‘The goal is to create a space which is unique and reflects the homeowner’s personality, but one that is also functional, timeless and comfortable,’ he says. The satisfaction that comes from a job well done is something that inspires and motivates Frans Alexander [...]

are the warm heart of a home, where most of our entertaining is planned – but kitchen design trends evolve rapidly, so be ready for some changes… The days of keeping your guests out of the kitchen are past. A renaissance is afoot and, according to Decorex Africa’s Trend Report for 2020, it’s time to repurpose your kitchen as a multifunctional space, where cooking, entertaining, relaxation, reading and homework are all supported. This is the message delivered by Creative Director Anita Bloom, author of this authoritative report on décor, interior design and lifestyle trends, which gives us a teasing glimpse of what to expect from Decorex Durban 2020, where the overarching theme is ‘Lifestyle by Design’. Bloom, who ran her own design studio, Just Bloom Designs, before moving to Inspire Trade Expo for four years and then joining the Decorex Africa team, is uniquely positioned to identify and share shifting design and décor trends. She says the humble kitchen is evolving into part of an integrated living space, in which boundaries between rooms are blurring: “The trend is towards an open-floor arrangement, which creates fluid motion between different functional zones in this area of the home, so it’s possible to [...]

Works by two of South Africa’s most renowned artists make rare public appearances when they go on sale this month by Stephan Welz & Co. for the first time at an auction. Seychelles Girl by Alexis Preller has not been seen in public for several decades and Winterveld by Jacob Henrik Pierneef has remained in the family of the current owner since it was first purchased. The works go on the Stephan Welz & Co. Fine Art and Design auction in Johannesburg on April 29 and 30. Signed and dated ’49, the oil on canvas painting by Preller (1911 -1975) being auctioned for the first time is a sensitive depiction of a young Seychelles woman painted during the period when the artist visited the Indian Ocean island. Stephan Welz & Co. is offering the work with an estimated price of R1 million to R1.5 million. The signed painting by Pierneef (1886-1957), widely regarded as South Africa’s most renowned landscape artist, depicts the Winterveld area north of Pretoria. “The use of light and colour is particularly evocative and is a very desirable example of the artist’s work,” says Stephen Welz & Co. fine art specialist Luke Crossley. The estimated price is [...]

For Design Miami 2017, Southern Guild presents a collection that celebrates a dynamic African design vernacular. Layered with historical and cultural references, echoes of the natural world and political disillusion, the works have a clarity of focus distilled to graphic silhouettes, compelling texture and the interplay of colour and form. This body of work expresses a conviction that the voice of this continent and not the received wisdom of others is the most vital and relevant inspiration. Southern Guild has spearheaded the collectible design category in Africa, propelling artist-designers to make spirited, challenging and complex work. Curated exhibitions, fertile collaborations and strategic partnerships have redefined perceptions of African design and established Southern Guild as a relevant and groundbreaking player in the global design arena. Featured Highlights: Andile Dyalvane Dokter and Misses John Vogel Justine Mahoney Porky Hefer With Additional Works By: Adam Birch Charles Haupt David Krynauw Madoda Fani Jesse Ede Jan Bekker Trevor Potter Otto du Plessis Meyer von Wielligh Paco Pakdoust and Conrad Botes Paco Pakdoust and John Murray Date: 6 – 10 December 2017 southernguild@theguildgroup.co.za www.southernguild.co.za www.theguildgroup.co.za Cape Town Gallery Shop 5B, Silo 5.
