For the very first time, Fish Hoek’s iconic department store AP Jones, the valley’s beloved 97-year-old family-run business, will explode with creativity as its front windows are transformed into a stunning, large-scale art installation. This bold display will be visible at street level and is designed to engage shoppers, pedestrians and passing traffic on Fish Hoek’s Main Road. The installation will be unveiled in phases, starting from 19 September 2025, and forms part of the build-up to the inaugural Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly (OSFHC), which takes place from 3 to 5 October 2025. The installation is a collaborative effort organised by participating OSFHC artists Lauren Shantall, Sue Kaplan and Yda Walt and jointly conceptualised by Walt (who is a celebrated textile artist and screen-printer) and Kaplan (who is a curator, painter and teacher). The installation includes the direct involvement of Susan Didcott, Marlise Keith, Leila and Emma Rowett, Sasha Scholtz and others, with the enthusiastic support of the AP Jones team. Additionally, all 19 artists that are part of OSFHC will contribute self-portraits in the medium of their choice that will form part of the installation. Screen-printed images on calico fabric, created in Walt’s studio, form the heart [...]

The inaugural edition of Open Studios Fish Hoek & Clovelly (OSFHC) will take place over the weekend of 3-5 October 2025, featuring 19 artists in 15 studio sites across four different routes. This is a chance to make connections, meet artists in person, explore the area and see some inspiring work, from paintings to ceramics to sculpture, papermaking to illustration, stitching, mosaics and more. ‘We have long admired other Deep South Open Studios, such as those in Noordhoek and Kommetjie, and we realised it was time to crank up the volume in our neck of the woods too, to show the world the depth and breadth of talent living this side of the peninsula,’ says the organisers. ‘In the past, Fish Hoek and Clovelly had a reputation as a bit of a sleepy hollow, a former dry suburb that is more of a retirement village than anything else, but a lot is happening here, and there are incredibly talented artists and makers who live here and who want to open their studios, homes and hearts to everyone to honour all that this area is and all that it can become.’ The event is free, and guests can visit as many [...]

Timed to run over Heritage Month, Sisonke Gallery hosts an exhibition that reflects on Cape Malay identity. This is the second iteration of A Glimpse Between Memoirs, a powerful joint exhibition by artists Shaunez Benting and Whaleed Ahjum, which was previously exhibited at the Bo-Kaap Cultural Hub in February 2024. The show is presented in collaboration with Our Cape Town Heritage (OCTH), an NPO that is committed to protecting, promoting and preserving heritage and culture by exploring visual art and history through education, and is curated by Aaliyah Ahmed. Through childhood memories and the echoes of apartheid, A Glimpse Between Memoirs explores the tension between history and speculation. Drawing on nostalgia, not as escapism but as a critical lens, the artists investigate how the stories we inherit (and the ones we choose to tell) shape the futures we dare to imagine, shining a light on how art can disrupt the status quo and honour ancestral legacies while opening up space for future possibility. Benting’s work reanimates the marginalised spaces of his youth through vibrant composite visuals that blur memory and imagination. Ahjum, whose practice is grounded in research and oil painting, delves into his Southeast Asian roots to uncover cultural [...]

Cape Town’s HUB Gallery is hosting a 2 month-long exhibition of 60 outstanding portraits selected from the Portrait 100 Award 2025 finalists. The show opens 30 August and runs until 29 October 2025, giving audiences the opportunity to experience a diverse range of contemporary portraiture. The prestigious Portrait Award is a biennial national competition presented by Rust-en-Vrede Gallery in Durbanville. Launched in 2013, it has grown to become one of South Africa’s most significant platforms for representational art – art that portrays recognisable objects, figures or scenes from the real world – celebrating technical excellence, narrative depth and emotional power in the medium of portraiture. The 100 best portraits are selected from the entries received, from which the Top 40, Top 5, Top 3 and overall winning portraits are chosen. The Top 40 portraits will be exhibited at Rust-en-Vrede Gallery, while HUB Gallery will support the Portrait 100 Award exhibition by presenting the remaining 60 works. All are for sale to the public. This year’s finalists were chosen by a panel of respected industry experts: Dr Dineke Orton, art historian, researcher and the curator of the University of Johannesburg Art Gallery; artist and entrepreneur Thonton Kubeya; and journalist, art critic [...]

This Heritage Month head out to Spier Wine Farm’s historic Old Wine Cellar for ‘Grounded Practice’ – a landmark ceramics exhibition on until 12 October 2025. Curated by Tamlin Blake, Chief Curator at Spier Arts Trust, the exhibition features 63 ceramic artworks by 42 artists from across South Africa – each one thoughtfully selected to explore themes of stability, sustainability, and self-reflection. ‘Grounded Practice’ offers more than a showcase of beautiful objects, it’s a timely conversation about what it means to feel rooted in a world of change. Rather than dictate a theme from the outset, Blake waited to see what ideas emerged organically from the artists’ submissions. “What came through, almost overwhelmingly, was a sense of instability – personally, politically, environmentally,” she explains. “Many artists were using their practice to find their footing again, to reestablish a sense of balance and belonging. That’s where the title ‘Grounded Practice’ comes from.” The Power of Clay Central to this year’s exhibition is the material itself. “Clay is a potent and enduring material in human civilisation,” Blake explains. “It’s often seen as a metaphor for creativity, malleability, and human potential. But once it’s fired and becomes ceramic, it also represents permanence and [...]

This exhibition will showcase the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden’s incredible impact on conservation, education and academic support while giving visitors the opportunity to relax, unwind, learn and explore. SUBG contributes to meaningful biodiversity conservation by sampling and managing ex situ collections of species and populations at risk of extinction according to global best practice criteria. Through the medium of Botanical Art and photography we focus on many Critically Endagered species in this year’s offering. Quite a few artists have spent time in the garden learning more about the ex situ conservation collections and documenting some of the plants in stunning renditions of the subjects. Martine Robinson Haemanthus canaliculatus. Says the specialist Botanical Art curator Karen Stewart: “Our artists are so passionate and knowledgeable about plants and bring out something individual about each plant painted. Their observational skills focus our attention on the wonderful world of plants, and the plight many find themselves in with habitat destruction. This year we are excited to introduce photography tpo the exhibition”. “Our world-class Oxalis living collection and many other projects are only possible because of the collaboration between SUBG and Stellenbosch University academic colleagues”, says Garden Curator Don Kirkwood.
South Africa’s rich tapestry of history, marked by trauma, resilience, and triumphs, continues to be woven through the art of storytelling. As the nation continues to grapple with its past, present and future, the construction of collective memory is a testament to its enduring national identity and aspirations. HUB Gallery in Cape Town is currently hosting 30 Years the Occupants, a poignant exploration of South Africa’s narrative since 1994, on show until 31 May 2024. The exhibition brings a collection of photo essays from Matthew Willman’s ‘Mandela Heritage Collection’ together with a selection of works from the Spier Collection, a contemporary Southern African collection encapsulating three decades of democracy that represent a multiplicity of post-apartheid narratives. Willman is a renowned documentary and fine art photographer born in Durban, South Africa, in 1979. His creativity was heavily shaped by his childhood during the latter years of apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s ‘walk to freedom’. As a commissioned photographer for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Willman went on to capture South Africa’s democratic shift. This afforded him many intimate experiences with the man whom, for Willman, ‘embodied the very spirit and conviction we all possess as Africans in the world today.’ The ‘Mandela Heritage [...]

Many people regard plants as less sentient, less important than people, yet our existence is linked with them. Research shows that plants communicate with one another, respond to their environments and, most likely, interact with humans on the level of energetic transfer. It’s these largely unknown but intriguing characteristics that artist Lauren Shantall has captured in her exhibition ‘Plant Babies’, a series of plant portraits in acrylics that will run in the gallery space at The Yard Cape Town, located in the Silo District in the V&A Waterfront, from 9 February until 9 March 2023. Shantall, who runs the award-winning communications agency Scout PR & Social Media, is often called on as a public speaker focusing on lifestyle trends, and she points out that social media abounds with botanical styling, potplant hashtags, and masterclasses on how to style your house plants for the urban jungles of now. From a macro perspective, she is fascinated by this pervasive plant movement and what it says about our society. ‘It makes me happy when I see the plant world taking pride of place in urban homes and spaces, and how the two seem to be moving closer together,’ she says of the trend, [...]

Spier believes art is for everyone, which is why the historical Stellenbosch Wine Farm showcases one of the biggest contemporary art collections in the country. Through the work of the Spier Arts Trust, African artists have an inclusive home to exhibit their impactful work, and visitors have a relaxing space to learn about local art, while enjoying good food and wine. The latest exhibition at Spier by South African artist Pierre Fouché is titled ‘The Seas and all will part, Expire’, and opened on the 16th of September at the Old Wine Cellar. Fouché is an internationally respected lacemaker and is already a farm favourite at Spier with his beautifully detailed lacework having inspired the creation of Spier’s ‘These Waves’ range of wines. Although he is a contemporary artist, Fouché frequently finds his creative spark from the past to produce something completely new. His feature piece at the exhibition, ‘The Little Binche Peacock’, reimagines a famous work of fine linen lace that dates back to the 18th century and was made using the traditional Binche technique. It was during his artist residency in Switzerland in 2014 that Fouché first encountered the Binche technique, but it left a lasting mark. Born [...]
