House Union Block (HUB) brings a collection of contemporary art to Riebeek Kasteel and Riebeek West as part of the Solo Studios weekend taking place in the Riebeek Valley from 26-28 August 2022. The work on show comprise painting and sculptural works sourced directly from artist studios across South Africa, a selection of Creative Blocks and Guerrilla Mosaic Bombs commissioned by HUB. HUB is one of the invited guest exhibitors of this year’s Solo Studios and the event “is proud to be associated with this year’s featured partners and contributors providing for some stimulating variation to the visual art on display.” In the past, Solo Studios has served to highlight the work of talented local artists residing in the Riebeek Valley; this year’s event enhances and extends the programming in an exciting new direction. The two separate HUB exhibitions are both curated by HUB’s Tamlin Blake, a curator and artist residing in the Riebeek valley herself, and taking part as a studio artist on show that weekend. The HUB exhibition venues can be found in the Riebeek Valley Museum in Riebeek Kasteel and at Ruby Rose Country House in Riebeek West, which is a few minutes’ drive apart. Some of the featured [...]

Design Indaba’s reputation for attracting illustrious speakers from around the world has seen it grow over its 25 years of existence into one of the foremost creative conferences in the world. Always committed to presenting a programme that foregrounds topical issues and cutting-edge developments across industries, its speakers are always at the top of their respective games, as along with rising stars on the brink of greatness. Its close, longstanding relationship with the visual arts has seen globally celebrated talent grace its stages over the years – and this year, Ghanaian star Ibrahim Mahama will join the ranks of artists who have shared their processes and visions with the conference delegates. As the youngest artist to exhibit in the first-ever Ghanaian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Mahama’s renown is growing worldwide – both for the scale of his work as well as the way in which it tackles complex and complicated aspects of his country’s past. Perhaps best known for his monumental installations, which see architectural structures draped in vast patchworks of old jute sacks, comparable to the work of the great Christo, he is not simply concerned with spectacle. These pieces represent the very fabric of Ghanaian life. Once [...]

Distinguished by striking organic shapes and intricately detailed transfer artwork, the new limited edition range of ceramics by “Martine and Galia Collaborate” boasts the best of both worlds: the creative expertise of an accomplished ceramic artist and the unmistakable signature of an award-winning fine artist. Seductively beautiful, each of the six lovingly hand-built pieces that makes up the edition is shaped using the coil method before it is embellished. By melding their respective fields, ceramicist Martine Jackson and fine artist Galia Gluckman have forged a creative powerhouse. It is the first time the two have joined forces. Martine, who graduated from the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2000, continues the creative lineage that dates back to her late grandfather, Morris Adler, a sculptor. She currently works in a ceramic studio established in 1978 by her late mother, Barbara Jackson, a well-established ceramicist who first introduced Martine to clay at the young age of five. Galia, on the other hand, usually produces large-scale multi-faceted artworks in her medium of choice: pigment ink on cotton paper and collage. She has exhibited across the globe and her work is represented in many private and corporate collections in Australia, [...]

From 12 March 2015 artist Galia Gluckman makes her solo debut at the Everard Read Gallery Cape Town. Since joining the Everard Read in August 2014, Gluckman has taken part in two group exhibitions, this however will feature a new body of artworks to be shown in conversation with fellow Everard Read artist Penelope Stutterheime. The official opening of the exhibition will be at 18h30 on Thursday 12 March 2015. Gluckman will be doing an artist’s walkabout at the gallery on Saturday 21 March, from 11am till 1pm. Gluckman produces large-scale, multi-faceted artworks in her medium of choice: pigment ink on cotton paper and collage. These pieces reflect varied contemporary concerns. Gluckman highlights ongoing creative and social conversations through her exploration of atmospheric and emotive themes. Wide-ranging in their environmental and social references, they draw upon contemporary notions of the passage of time and also reference the creative subcultures of the global community. The viewer is invited to consider the dialogue surrounding mass production versus the handcrafted; oscillate between her abstraction of natural and man-made habitats; and follow her reflections on the tension between order and chaos. Galia Gluckman: The Early Years Born in 1973, Gluckman first qualified as a [...]

Known as the “Mining Artist”, Jeannette Unite travels around the globe and researches what she refers to as the industrial sublime. Mining the earth for inspiration, she brings its minerals to life by incorporating them into large-scale textured artworks on canvas and paper. Working with earth materials, mines and maps, Jeannette’s geological paintings and drawings incorporate the metals and matter that defined and continue to shape the mineral and industrial revolution. In March 2015, Jeannette will be participating in the “Blowing in the Wind” group art exhibition at the KwaZulu-Natal Society of Arts (KZNSA) gallery in Durban. The exhibition is curated by respected curator Carol Brown and aims to remind us how intolerance, fanaticism and violence have little changed since the 1960s. Rooted in two famous song titles from that era – “Blowing in the Wind” by Bob Dylan and “Imagine” by John Lennon – the curatorial intention of this exhibition is to revisit these lyrics in the light of the last half century, where little progress has been made. The exhibition will run from 03 – 22 March 2015 and includes works by other artists such as Bongani Khanyile, Wonder Mbambo, Fran Saunders, Derrick Nxumalo, Paul Botes, Siobhan O’Reagain, [...]
