Lalela, a non-profit arts education programme for at-risk youth in Sub-Saharan Africa, knows the power of creativity to uplift, inspire, encourage, motivate and ignite innovation. In the 10 years since launching its life-changing art programmes, Lalela has seen this play out in classrooms and workshops across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Uganda. Lockdown in South Africa has been no different in terms of allowing learners a much-needed creative outlet to help them process and understand the world around them. Following the enforcement of a national lockdown as an urgent measure to stem the spread of the Coronavirus in South Africa, we’ve watched with wonder as children of all ages harnessed their creativity in ways we never imagined. During the lockdown, schools were required to close their doors and all learners were sent home just as Lalela’s art facilitators were making their final preparations for the much-anticipated March holiday programme. Lalela’s holiday programmes – usually held in the March, June and December school holidays within the communities they serve – provide necessary structure along with fun and absorbing creative activities for children during the long days away from their classrooms, when supervision at home might be lacking while parents and guardians are at [...]

We are Cape Town will celebrate the unique and renowned design spirit of the Mother City – which was credited as the world’s most creative city in 2016. Conceptualised and curated by 100% Design South Africa’s Creative Director, Cathy O’Clery, We are Cape Town celebrates some of the enablers, curators, collaborators, studios and designers who have put the city on the world’s design map. The exhibition will be one of the main attractions of Decorex Cape Town, which takes place from 27 – 30 April 2017. “The Cape Town design community plays a substantial role in our society by creating outstanding environments for our tourists, jobs for our residents, beautiful interior solutions for homes, and work that resonates across the globe,” Cathy O’Clery explains. “We Are Cape Town is dual purpose – putting the spotlight on the city as a nurturer and hub of creative talent and promoting a community that plays a substantial part in the economic growth of the city.” We are Cape Town will feature work by Cape Town-based design practitioners such as studio mates Clementina van der Walt, Peta Becker and Hoi P’loy, Michael Chandler and some of the Chandler House collaborators as well as artists [...]

Would-be jet setters need not check into hip hotels in London, New York, Sydney or Tokyo in order to pick up on the freshest global trends in hospitality design. But they should definitely make a point of checking out this year’s 100% Design South Africa, held in association with Dauphin HumanDesign® Group. The show takes place from 6 to 10 August 2015 at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, alongside Decorex Joburg. Now in its second year, South Africa’s only international design show is again presenting a superbly curated showcase of leaders in the field. A definite highlight, whether for globetrotters or simply armchair travellers with a love of design, is the exhibition 100% Hotel. 100% Hotel is being presented in collaboration with esteemed Johannesburg design business Generation, founded by prominent designer Julia Day some 25 years ago. Invited to showcase “a cutting-edge and unique hotel space”, the Generation team has partnered with iconic Italian furniture brand De Padova. “For our interpretation of a hotel space, we have decided to feature a lobby area,” says Day. “The lobby is an essential part of the overall design because it is the first space that hotel clientele are exposed to.
Distinguished by striking organic shapes and intricately detailed transfer artwork, the new limited edition range of ceramics by “Martine and Galia Collaborate” boasts the best of both worlds: the creative expertise of an accomplished ceramic artist and the unmistakable signature of an award-winning fine artist. Seductively beautiful, each of the six lovingly hand-built pieces that makes up the edition is shaped using the coil method before it is embellished. By melding their respective fields, ceramicist Martine Jackson and fine artist Galia Gluckman have forged a creative powerhouse. It is the first time the two have joined forces. Martine, who graduated from the University of Cape Town’s Michaelis School of Fine Art in 2000, continues the creative lineage that dates back to her late grandfather, Morris Adler, a sculptor. She currently works in a ceramic studio established in 1978 by her late mother, Barbara Jackson, a well-established ceramicist who first introduced Martine to clay at the young age of five. Galia, on the other hand, usually produces large-scale multi-faceted artworks in her medium of choice: pigment ink on cotton paper and collage. She has exhibited across the globe and her work is represented in many private and corporate collections in Australia, [...]
