Exploring various themes, Spier Light Art delves into the ethereal and the whimsical, the political landscape, humanity’s changing relationship with technology, tenacity in the face of adversity, and Spier’s unique history. Here we take a look at some of the installations featured in Spier Light Art 2023: Orpheus by Georgia Munnik In the Greek tragedy, Orpheus loses his dead wife Eurydice a second time as he fails to fulfil the condition of bringing her back to life: not to look back at her as she crosses the threshold from dead to living. The artwork’s title, ‘Orpheus’, refers to the colonisation of Stellenbosch and the incessant gaze of historically white wine farmers looking at the soil as a resource. ‘Orpheus’ is a glass neon light sculpture derived from a digital rendering of a font that the artist developed from the Australian parasite plant, dodder. The parasite plant cannot photosynthesise; instead, it extracts nutrients from host plants through suctioning tendrils. Dodder’s ‘long strings of cursive writing’ inscribes its tendrils on host plants, strangling them while calling things into being – one cannot invoke without naming and the parasite font forms words to call to them. Corset Intransit by QUEEZYBABAZ and Christina Fortune [...]

It’s difficult to believe that Hanif Kara almost gave up on engineering when the United Kingdom was hit by a recession in 1996. The now celebrated structural engineer, whose career bridges the engineering and architectural disciplines through what he refers to as ‘design engineering’ has worked with some of the world’s leading architecture firms, like Adjaye Associates, BIG, David Chipperfield Architects, Heatherwick Studio, Foster + Partners, Zaha Hadid Architects, and the now defunct Will Architects. His own Studio AKT II has won more than 300 design awards. But the Ugandan-born maverick thought about making a clean break with the discipline, after becoming disillusioned with the type of engineering work he was doing at YRM Anthony Hunt, and opened up two dry-cleaning shops. It was his wife who persuaded him to start his own practice, so he co-founded AKT with Robin Adams and Albert Williamson-Taylor. The business was later renamed AKT II after a sale and later buy-back with new partners, and input from an angel investor. Kara has always done things differently. Forced to leave Uganda in 1972 when Idi Amin purged British Asians from the country, he finished school in Cheshire in England and went on to study [...]

The Stellenbosch Triennale, happening in venues across the historic town from 11 February to 30 April 2020, draws in the continent’s important curators to present programmes interlocking with and at many levels of artistic achievement. On The Cusp is not just an exhibition of emergent artistic or related practices, but presents the work of a number of exciting new artists within the larger Stellenbosch Triennale. Conceptually, On The Cusp references the idea of the accumulated potential that an individual or generation possesses at a crucial interval of time – just before the onset of something great. The exhibition is one of the Triennale’s identifying exhibitions – a core part of the programme, initiated by Chief Curator Khanyisile Mbongwa. Curated by contemporary Ghanaian curator, artist and writer Bernard Akoi-Jackson, On The Cusp takes into account future possibilities by engaging with new artists set to innovate in the African scene to come, as well as on the world stage. The exhibition follows the ethos of the Triennale as it ventures beyond the confines of the traditional, exposing fresh practices — aesthetic, conceptual, critical or material. Akoi-Jackson has upon the advice of a network of colleague practitioners across the continent, selected ten African [...]

The Stellenbosch Triennale 2020, brainchild of the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust, takes place from 11 February to 30 April 2020 and will present a remarkable collection of artistic talents to construct an event in which contemporary African art will hold a critical dialogue with the society that fosters and exhibits it. The theme Tomorrow There Will Be More of Us, which was conceived by Chief Curator and Artistic Director Khanyisile Mbongwa, runs as a thread throughout the seven multidisciplinary platforms. All will provide meeting points for engagement with the divided past, the collective present and imagined futures. The curator’s exhibition has been conceived by Mbongwa, with co-curator Bernard Akoi-Jackson. It will feature 20 multidisciplinary artists, from a range of African countries. On the list, selected by the curatorial team, are some of the world’s most revered artists whose works are situated at the borderline between avant-garde and mainstream: Conceptualist and sculptor Ibrahim Mahama (Ghana), Visual artist Sethembile Msezane (South Africa) and filmmaker Kivu Ruhorahoza (Rwanda) – to name a few. Mbongwa sees the theme, and participants, as being part of a unfolding narrative. “For me, Tomorrow There Will Be More of Us is about imagining (and creating) common sustainable futures [...]

A leading Durban interior designer driven by the satisfaction of his clients, Frans Alexander of Frans Alexander Interiors describes himself as a perfectionist: ‘I’m driven by the result and outcome of each project. Knowing that I have achieved the desired emotion is what pushes me to ensure every one of my clients’ experiences the sense of joy design can bring!’ Frans Alexander Interiors was founded in 2002 and the company works across Residential, Hospitality and Commercial projects. All projects tend to be led by a feeling, an ethos, rather than an aesthetic. ‘I believe that the key to each successful interior lies in the details and it’s there where I like to invest a lot of effort in order to achieve a well-executed space. The small details are what elicit an emotional response from a space,’ he notes. Over and above his own vision however, the designer aims with each project to reflect the client’s own viewpoint. ‘The goal is to create a space which is unique and reflects the homeowner’s personality, but one that is also functional, timeless and comfortable,’ he says. The satisfaction that comes from a job well done is something that inspires and motivates Frans Alexander [...]

Artist Galia Gluckman’s ambitious new solo presentation ‘ora (edge)’ opens officially at 18h30 on Thursday, 3 May 2018 at CIRCA Cape Town. Running until 26 May 2018, Gluckman’s solo features heavily focused and well-developed examples that have taken close to two years to complete. Many are large-scale and mark a developed and refined language of multi-faceted artworks on cotton paper with pigment ink, collage and acrylic paint. Within the artist’s journey from order to disorder [or vice versa], one can sense a deep spirited investigation. Considering notions of self-reflection and meditation, Gluckman’s practice illustrates a poignant vision of ‘cellular memory, passion and what it means to be human’. Through the use of various visual references, colour and complex artistic detail, there is a dazzling alchemy of contrasting colours and frequencies. This sharp attention to detail evokes sensations of both pure abstraction and a unique artistic vision of the world around us. Gluckman’s work has been featured in various design and art publications and she is represented in many private and corporate collections in Australia, Dubai, Israel, South Africa, Spain, the United Kingdom and the USA. In South Africa, this includes some of her works in the Leeu Collection Franschhoek, M & C SAATCHI ABEL Collection, Rupert Collection, South African Presidential Collection and The Spier Arts Collection.
EXHIBITUS is the second solo exhibition by Cape Town artist Lucie de Moyencourt. Self-taught, this show pays homage to her informal and idiosyncratic art-training. De Moyencourt’s work was developed through the art of observation in her daily life, as well as by being exposed to European art from a young age through visits to her family in France. In this show, Lucie takes us with her on a recent Summer trip to Europe. Her ink drawings are her diary and act as an itinerary of her travels. We are given access to the great Museums and Galleries of Europe through her paintings and we gain insight into which works the artist herself is drawn to. Lucie not only pays attention to the works displayed in these famous collections; she shifts her gaze to observe the way visitors in galleries interact with the works on the wall. The show acts as more than just a recording of gallery visits – it also highlights the tension between art history and technology, the image and the making of the image and ultimately the masterpiece and the mundane. Dates: The exhibition will run until the 31st October Venue: The Voorkamer Gallery at Chandler House, 53 Church Street, Cape Town.

South Africa’s most creative young design project has just been revealed: the overall winner of the inaugural PPC Imaginarium Awards was announced on 05 March 2015 in Cape Town. The competition announcement took place at the Youngblood Foundation Gallery on Bree St, and the event formed part of the popular First Thursdays initiative. In its inaugural year, the PPC Imaginarium has sought to establish and unearth unknown creatives across six disciplines (film, industrial design, fashion, jewellery, architecture and sculpture). The competition received a staggering 477 entries from South Africa’s best and brightest designers and artists, who all used concrete as a medium of expression. Winners in six categories were carefully selected and their work showcased at the UJ Gallery in Johannesburg. Thereafter the exhibition, which was curated by Stephen Hobbs, travelled to the Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town where it was put on display for the duration of the event from 27 February 01 March, before opening at Youngblood until 28 March 2015. The overall winning design – a concrete speaker – comes from the industrial design category. Designers Martin Bolton and Craig Tyndall used acrylic and leather to transform concrete from “being an everyday construction material into a [...]
