At the opening ceremony of Spier Light Art on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December 2019, the audience will be invited to join a procession across a multi-sensory, cross-cultural wonderland featuring dancers, stilt walkers and other illuminating enchantments. Choreographer Jay Pather’s performance piece, From Before, will feature 22 Shembe, classical ballet and Bharatha Natyam dancers – all wearing light-infused costumes. Other performances include a new production by the spectacularly athletic Indoni Dance Company and a production with large puppets by Janni Younge. Opening ceremony tickets: R200 per adult (includes a complimentary glass of wine) R75 per child under 12. R650 per couple (includes two adult entry tickets, a picnic and bottle of Signature Spier wine). Starting time: Performance starts at 18:00 Tickets are sold through www.webtickets.co.za From 8 December 2019 to 19 January 2020, Spier Light Art will be freely accessible to the public.
Following the success of the inaugural Spier Light Art Festival, the historic Stellenbosch wine farm will present a second edition from 6 December 2019 to 19 January 2020. The first edition of the festival took place over Dec 2018 / Jan 2019, lighting Spier up with an array of artworks incorporating light and sound. More than 10 000 people viewed the 18 artworks, ranging from interactive installations to pieces that invited the visitor to pause and reflect. “Light art installations are intractable and mercurial by nature. Transcending the confines of their materiality, light art works are also defined by what they illuminate or hide” reflect the festival’s curators, Jay Pather and Vaughn Sadie. “These experiences – of walking and pausing, catching a glimpse or settling down to absorb – invited introspection, adventure and playfulness. Scattered across the Spier estate, each work offered an opportunity to experience the complex, multi-hued, multi-faceted texture of our environment and ourselves.” The Sunday Times Neighbourhood supplement wrote about the previous Spier Light Art Festival: “Far from your average colourful and flashing Christmas light show, the Spier Light Art Fest is an emotional and even physical affair, but always amazes… you won’t be disappointed.” Call for [...]

Works by two of South Africa’s most renowned artists make rare public appearances when they go on sale this month by Stephan Welz & Co. for the first time at an auction. Seychelles Girl by Alexis Preller has not been seen in public for several decades and Winterveld by Jacob Henrik Pierneef has remained in the family of the current owner since it was first purchased. The works go on the Stephan Welz & Co. Fine Art and Design auction in Johannesburg on April 29 and 30. Signed and dated ’49, the oil on canvas painting by Preller (1911 -1975) being auctioned for the first time is a sensitive depiction of a young Seychelles woman painted during the period when the artist visited the Indian Ocean island. Stephan Welz & Co. is offering the work with an estimated price of R1 million to R1.5 million. The signed painting by Pierneef (1886-1957), widely regarded as South Africa’s most renowned landscape artist, depicts the Winterveld area north of Pretoria. “The use of light and colour is particularly evocative and is a very desirable example of the artist’s work,” says Stephen Welz & Co. fine art specialist Luke Crossley. The estimated price is [...]

Artworks made in the multiple are at the centre of three inter-related events at Open Design Cape Town, hosted by EDITIONS Cape Town at Cape Town City Hall. To kick off Open Design on Thursday 13 August, Katherine Bull and Warren Editions performed, Lessons in Transformation The Speech. This site-specific performance was dedicated to the occasion of Nelson Mandela’s first public speech, made on the veranda of City Hall on 11 February 1990 – the day of his release from prison. Bull interprets by means of engraving onto perspex the projecting moving image of Mandela’s speech. The artist distills the moving image into the four process colours – yellow, magenta, cyan and black. These become the matrices for a colour combination print. Printing took place by Warren Editions while Bull engraved the matrices, bringing together a partnership of mark-making and the impression of these marks in ink on substrate. The performance spread out in two rooms – one dedicated to a satellite studio space for Warren Editions. The imprint of the matrices over one another blends the four process colours into a full chroma of the moving image interpreted by Bull. Occurring alongside, the exhibition HOST is organised [...]
