The film captures intimate moments in the lives of a few young girls in Manenberg, and is part of a larger storytelling initiative organized by BRAVE during lockdown to ensure the voices of young women are not lost in the chaos of a pandemic.
The “Non-stop Garden 100-miler Crew” will run 100 miles in their gardens to raise money in support of BRAVE, a local NPO that focuses on leadership skills for young women and girls in Manenberg, and which is currently providing food and other essential goods to these girls and their families during lockdown. The crew comprises a group of friends that are always on the lookout for the next crazy adventure and an opportunity to challenge and test ourselves. Lee-Ann Persse has competed at two Olympic Games for rowing and cycled across the country from Cape Town to Pietermaritzburg to run the Comrades marathon as part of the Unogwaja Challenge. Mike Wessels, better known as Baywatch Ballie, is the current South African Wave-Ski champion. Kevin Sheehan and Mark Sheehan are wannabe Adventure Racers and type II fun professionals. Whilst Christoff Bothma, a new Dad and tax genius, is seriously reconsidering his friend choices. The one thing they all have in common is a passion for giving back and helping those in need. Says Smith: “Being stuck at home is immensely frustrating for everyone but we are all thankful and needed to find a way to contribute. So each running a 100 miles [...]

Image credit: Justine Mahoney Across the African continent, over 80% of school-ready girls enrol in grade one, but by the time they reach university, only 8% are successful in continuing their tertiary education. BRAVE is changing this. BRAVE uses the power of travel to create opportunities for girls living in some of the most dangerous communities across Africa to complete their education and become effective, ethical leaders, explorers and advocates for themselves and others. Following the overwhelming success of the inaugural BRAVE dinner and exhibit in July 2016, GUILD is hosting the second annual BRAVE exhibit and auction at its flagship store and gallery in the new silo district in Cape Town. On Thursday, 23 November, guests will be treated to live music, with canapés by The Yard and drinks by Spice Route, followed by enthralling stories from extraordinary explorers, leaders and adventurers, including two of the all-female Black Mamba anti-poaching team; acclaimed artist Justine Mahoney; National Geographic Explorer of the Year, paleoanthropologist Marina Elliot; visionary GUILD director, Trevyn McGowan; the first female conservation student from African Leadership University (ALU); and Rock Girl spoken-word poet Miche Williams. At the auction, artists and designers, along with luminaries from across South Africa, [...]
