Every year, South Africans celebrate the day that commemorates thousands of protesting women who marched onto the Union Buildings in 1956 in defiance of the regime’s enforcement of pass laws. To pay homage to the fearless women who changed our political landscape, the nation celebrates Women’s Month in August 2018 – the observance of this homage is especially heralded at Carrol Boyes Functional Art, where women make up over half of the business’s workforce. Renowned and celebrated artist-designer Carrol Boyes trail-blazed against gender inequality in the workplace when she birthed her iconic brand, Carrol Boyes Functional Art. Carrol trained and worked as a teacher and immersed herself in her creative career in earnest when she was 35 years old, and so the legacy of luxury flatware, giftware, tableware and home accessories came to be; her distinctive works are now sold in over 30 countries with women spearheading the Carrol Boyes Functional Art agenda. The female South African workforce weighs in at 44% whilst Carrol Boyes Functional Art has exceeded this total, boasting an impressive 67% women-led staff compliment! “I believe Carrol makes a conscious effort to employ women,” says Michelé Stuurman, Head of Marketing and PR at Carrol Boyes Functional [...]

If you have ever wondered who the creator is behind the Carrol Boyes wine collection, Hendrik Snyman can be found passionately creating and developing the range for the wine industry and its wine lovers. Carrol Boyes Wines is the joint venture of Carrol Boyes, whose iconic style graces the labels of these wines, and her brother John Boyes with his business partner Neels Barnardt, both of Stellenbosch-based Barnardt Boyes Wines. Resident winemaker is Hendrik Snyman, a widely acclaimed winemaker whose awards lay testimony to his dedication and expertise. With a number of industry accolades under his belt, Snyman worked internationally in top wine-making destinations, including Europe, the US and New Zealand. He joined Barnardt Boyes in 2013 and has since led production of Carrol Boyes’ wine portfolio, winning Best MCC at the 2015 Michelangelo Wine Awards for the Carrol Boyes Limited Edition Pinot Noir Chardonnay 2011 Méthode Cap Classique. Snyman’s award-winning career was preceded by his training in viticulture and oenology at the Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute in the Western Cape. Before winemaking, Snyman had wished to pursue architecture; given his penchant for agriculture he believed his creativity would be served better in winemaking and upon graduating in 2005 he [...]

If you’re looking for the perfect winter fireside wine, look no further than Carrol Boyes Wines 2016 Sketchbook Merlot, an ideal winter warmer partner. It’s a complex red wine that boasts a variety of light notes with aromatic layers and forms part of the 2016 Sketchbook collection, a critically acclaimed, limited-edition portfolio of wines from Carrol Boyes Wines. Harvest of the grapes used for the Sketchbook Merlot takes place in the early hours of the morning, and the 14-year-old vineyard yields on average eight tons per hectare. The Merlot grapes from the high-density vineyard are hand-picked with the six-wire trellising system being employed, resulting in a meticulous viticulture practice, including bunch-halving and intense canopy management. Only the finest hand-selected grapes are fermented in French oak casks that accommodate 300 litres each. The result is a wine with deep structure and firmer, finer-grained tannins, ideal for cellaring purposes. The Carrol Boyes Wines 2016 Sketchbook Merlot is a rich and concentrated wine with aromatic layers that include coconut, clove, black cherry, chocolate and cinnamon. Cherry and plum elements carry a long finish, with light notes of oak toffee that can be paired with charcuterie platters or a hearty pasta dish. A light Merlot [...]

On a trip to Morocco several years ago, artist and designer Carrol Boyes learnt that a certain bluish-purple cloth was prized in North-West Africa. Called ‘indigo’, the dye used comes from a small indigenous shrub and is considered very valuable, at times even replacing local currencies. She was inspired both by the depth of the colour and the way the Tuareg nomads wore it with so much pride. Hence, the Indigo Girls range was born! The Indigo Girls range consists of a “composed” Chef’s Plate, “enticing” Dinner Plates (x4), “at leisure” Salad Bowl, “graceful” Cereal/Soup Bowls (x4) and “spellbinding” Side Plates (x4). Set pieces are composed of Fine Bone China and are thus suitable for all homes – be they halaal, kosher or vegan. Make an impression this Mother’s Day with the Indigo Girls! The Indigo Girls selection is available online via www.carrolboyes.com and in stores nationwide from R159. About the designer Carrol Boyes is the founder, creator and CEO of the Carrol Boyes Group, which is famous for taking utilitarian product designs to unparalleled new heights.
Celebrating its 40th birthday in 2018, the popular Cape Town Cycle Tour is proudly adding a new category for cyclists with visual impairment. The new trophy was designed by South African studio and global design favourite Carrol Boyes. Carrol Boyes’ design is inspired by the technical and kinetic elements of this new category. The visually impaired cyclist rides a tandem bicycle and sits directly behind a sighted cyclist. The new trophy design depicts tandems encircling two wheels, symbolising two riders working in unison. The base is made from fragrant cedar wood, and the design features tactile elements that are inspired by braille script. “The non-visual senses are stimulated by the kinetic spinning of the wheels,” Holly Birkby the designer of the trophy explains. “The design continues the machine aesthetic of the previous trophies, combining laser-cut stainless steel and industrial fastenings.” The Carrol Boyes design team also developed the Cape Town Cycle Tour’s men’s and women’s trophies in 2013. Drawing on diverse elements, including the Cape’s rugged terrain, the design showed vignettes of cyclists and distinct local mountains, such as Table Mountain and Simon’s Town’s Hangklip. Stylized king proteas (the shape of which echoes that of a bike sprocket) and penguins [...]

Redolent of tropical flavours, the 2016 Sketchbook Rosé from Carrol Boyes Wines is made using only the finest Cinsaut grapes, and is part of a collection of critically acclaimed, limited-edition vintages. In the making of the 2016 Sketchbook Rosé, grapes grown in the Swartland region are handpicked at 22° Balling. Yield is low in these parts, where the land is dry and the vineyards are unirrigated. Picked grapes are thus of especially good quality. After fermentation, each batch goes through a selection process from which only the best go into the finished rosé. Made from 100% Cinsaut grapes, the 2016 Sketchbook Rosé is a melange of flavours, including cherries, strawberries and raspberries, and hints of apple and apricot. Its fruitiness and mild acidity produce a distinct flavour that caresses and lingers on the palate. This salmon-pink wine can be enjoyed on its own, but goes equally well with sushi. About Carrol Boyes Wines Carrol Boyes, the well-known South African artist and designer, has partnered with her brother, farmer and financer John Boyes and partner Neels Barnardt of Barnardt Boyes, to create a unique range of limited-edition premier wines under the Carrol Boyes Wines banner. The selection is critically acclaimed and [...]
