Careers have been launched. Dreams have been realised. Since 2016 the biannual Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search has surfaced the hottest emerging designers in the country – talented creatives who’ve benefited from this coveted business-accelerator opportunity that takes talent out of the shadows and mentors it into the spotlight. Applications are now open for the sixth edition of Nando’s HYD and young designers from across South Africa are invited to show what they’re made of, with entrants invited to rise to the challenge of designing a striking linear light. At its simplest, ‘linear lighting’ is a source of illumination where all related fixtures are arranged in a straight row, providing directional lighting. Linear lights are often hung above a long table or counter. For Nando’s HYD, the aim is to design a linear light that would shine in any Nando’s restaurant anywhere in the world. Sculptural and crafted elements could introduce texture and colour, while combinations of materials create unique and interesting pieces that contribute to the overall design of the restaurant interior. Handmade details created in collaboration with crafters could be important aspects of the concept. Installation and longevity are vital, and an understanding of how the [...]

The Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search is back and invites young creatives to chase their dreams – their ‘Screen Dreams’! Each iteration of the biennial talent search seeks relevant new product designs for Nando’s restaurants around the world; for 2024, entrants have been challenged to design their own sensational screens. Steel woven screen by TheUrbanative behind server by Sifiso Shange (Afri Modern) at Nando’s Central Kitchen, Johannesburg.Photographed by Elsa Young. Since 2014, the best young creative talents in South Africa have shared their designs for lights, patterns, benches and servers which Nando’s interior designers across the world have gone on to utilise in hundreds of casas (as Nando’s calls its restaurants) – linking young designers with commercial opportunities. In 2022 Nikhil Tricam and Nindya Bucktowar of Kalki Ceramics were the winners for their flora-inspired Fynbos Server, while 2020 and 2018 respectively saw Katlego Tshuma and Agrippa Mncedisi Hlophe taking home the title of ‘Hot Young Designer’. The first edition of the talent search was a shared win between Thabisa Mjo and Samantha Foaden. Mjo of Mash T Design Studio, who described the competition as having ‘changed the trajectory of my entire life’, went on to make history [...]

Support from big business buying from smaller manufacturers and makers like us not only helps us upgrade our businesses, our techniques and machinery, it also helps us involve more people. Just this one project has helped three other people who didn’t work here before,’ says Mpho Vackier, the creative director and founder of TheUrbanative, a South African furniture and lighting design brand. Along with some of the most recognised designer makers in SA, and including three fellow creative directors and founding designers, Mash T Design Studio’s Thabiso Mjo, Lulasclan’s Bonolo Chepape and Modern Gesture’s Candice Lawrence, Vackier recently completed a collaborative design project with the South African team behind the global beer brand SOL. Facilitated by Clout/SA, a purpose-driven creative agency and business-to-business market maker that facilitates opportunities for collaboration between designer-makers and corporate clients, the project saw the designers create new pieces as well as adapt existing designs towards a collection that showcases an undeniably South African design approach, while also celebrating SOL’s positive and optimistic brand identity. Candice Lawrence Modern Gesture_Tutu light Thabisa Mjo Mash T_Bench Mpho Vakier Urbanative “Live from the Sunny Side” is SOL’s campaign.
Creative agency Clout/SA is on a mission to transform the South African design landscape and introduce the country’s brightest creative talents to the world. But in business, creativity is nothing without nous, which is why Clout/SA has been helping designers to master the basics. An understanding of the business world is key no matter what industry you’re in. From architecture to entertainment, music to design, learning business basics is vital for creatives to gain an edge and be successful. It’s this gap in designers’ knowledge that Clout/SA, a purpose-driven creative agency and business-to-business market maker, is successfully filling. ‘We recognised that many of [the designers we work with] have incredible creative talents, but they were missing foundational business principles and practices,’ explains managing executive Nokuzola Jennes. This led to the development of a business mentorship programme, which kicked off in 2019, in partnership with Enterprise Room, a business management consultancy. Participants receive on-site training, before embarking on an ongoing off-site training programme that includes being allocated mentors to help with finances, production and other aspects of running a successful business. Mpho Vackier, founder of award-winning furniture design brand The Urbanative, says the programme helped her realise ‘that I am both [...]

The South African design industry is at an exciting point in its evolution. Every year a new crop of names emerges to show their talents to the world as local design is increasingly spotlighted on the global stage. The Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search (HYD) plays a key role in this ongoing industry development by functioning as launching pad for fresh young talent. Now in its fourth iteration, HYD aims to unearth saucy new designs for Nando’s restaurants around the world, and fire up the careers of emerging local creatives. The popular competition, which is facilitated by Clout/SA, has just announced its much-awaited list of 10 finalists for 2022. HYD tasked young designers with conceptualising a condiment unit to display the brand’s acclaimed Peri Peri sauces. The challenge was to do so in such a way that these sauces and their piquant ingredients, which form an intrinsic part of the Nando’s experience, remain visible and accessible to customers throughout their visit. The competition received 134 entries from across the country, making the judging process a tough call for the adjudication panel. The finalists were chosen by a prestigious panel of local and global industry judges including Director of the [...]

After an intensive judging process, the winners of the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) Talent Search have finally been revealed. Design duo Nikhil Tricam and Nindya Bucktowar, have been named as 2022’s winners. The announcement was made on 26 October 2022 at this year’s Basha Uhuru youth festival at Con Hill, Johannesburg. Together, Tricam and Bucktowar are the owners of Kalki Ceramics, a design studio based in Durban specialising in bespoke handcrafted ceramic tiles. For their winning entry, they looked to South African flora and desert landscapes for inspiration. Their Cactus Server draws on the duo’s combined experience in ceramics, product design and architecture to create a rich and textural functional art piece. “Utilizing Kalki Ceramics tiles in unique glazes reminiscent of fynbos, succulents and flowers endemic to South Africa, the Cactus Server blends contemporary form with organic materials and motifs to create a uniquely South African design,” says Tricam. Being named as winners of the Nando’s HYD 2022 will open up new business opportunities for Tricam and Bucktowar including having their piece prototyped and included on the Nando’s Portal to Africa, an online ordering and purchasing platform utilised by interior design studios locally and globally to source South African designer items [...]

Jali’s work formed part of an exhibition of past and current designs by the various finalists and winners of HYD since its inception in 2016. Siviwe Jali Clout/SA’s director, Tracy Lynch, curated the bold, eclectic retrospective exhibition at 100% Design Africa, which was co-located within Decorex Africa Reimagined at the CTICC in Cape Town. Many of these pieces, including Jali’s three, were brought to life through collaborations between emerging designers and established designers and makers initiated by Clout/SA. Jali’s pieces include Nokhanya Lights, Ntsimbi server and Cupisa bench. The lights are a collaboration with Ashanti Design, the server was brought to life with the assistance of TanDesignSA and the bench is made by Pedersen + Lennard. Jali founded the Durban-based industrial and product design consultancy uMugqa Studio in 2018.
