AAAA, a co-operation of artisans from Mali, is launching a pop-up exhibition of contemporary African designs based on traditional techniques in collaboration with Cécile & Boyd. The display will run at Cécile & Boyd’s landmark Kloof Nek Road destination in Cape Town, presenting an opportunity for local interior designers, decorators and art lovers to experience leading decorative homeware from the continent. The pop-up will open to the public from 26 February 2020 onwards and will run for two weeks. AAAA and Cecile & Boyd will present a concise collection of handcrafted Textile Totems that will be showcased to the South African market for the first time. Playing on a love of symbolism and design, AAAA stands for Atelier Autodidacts Anti-Algorithms. The co-op aims to celebrate traditional artisanal methods, which includes championing the original Malian textile artform of Bogolan. Bogolan (which means made of mud) is a traditional handmade Malian cotton fabric (called finimugu) that is dyed with fermented mud. AAAA incorporates Bogolan, also known as Bògòlanfini, into their designs and textures, and it is some of these works that will be shown in Cape Town. Visitors can expect to see an edited selection of striking Textile Totems in eight distinct [...]

Tucked away in the hills of Hout Bay are two serene properties that offer the ultimate escape from it all –Villa Maison Noir and its brand-new neighbour, Villa Verte. These luxurious contemporary villas, built on the mountainside, are like a home away from home for guests and offer slightly different propositions for getaways, events and extended holidays. The overarching theme, however, is recharging in one of Cape Town’s most picturesque settings. The properties are owned by design-and-entrepreneur power duo Jim Brett (of Anthropologie and West Elm fame) and Ed Gray (who previously owned a luxury home furnishings store in Philadelphia by the name of Bruges Home). They put down roots and found the perfect spot in Hout Bay, where a blue gum forest on the back side of Table Mountain had been cleared and where the expansive property cluster that makes up Villa Maison Noir sits. Now expanding the brand further, they’ve created a [...]

What are the hottest décor, interior design and lifestyle trends for 2020? Creative Director Anita Bloom reveals all in the Decorex Africa Trend Report 2020 – the definitive guide to what’s in vogue. After years of enjoying industrial, Nordic and navy design trends, be prepared for a shift towards something more eclectic – the coexistence or unification of different styles that reflect good taste and personality. This is the message delivered by Anita Bloom, the Creative Director for Decorex Africa and 100% Design South Africa, in the latest Decorex Africa Trend Report 2020 – the authoritative guide for the creative industries. The report provides a tantalising glimpse of what to expect from Decorex 2020 in Durban, Cape Town and Joburg, when designers and manufacturers showcase all the latest trends, concepts and products that will guide and inspire our interiors. The broad themes emphasised in the report will be featured in the Mobelli Furniture + Living Trend House – Urban Living by Design, Insta-Interiors and Trend Installation as well as pop-up restaurants, cafés and feature areas at each show. Bloom, who authored the report, ran her own design studio, Just Bloom Designs, before moving to Inspire Trade Expo for four years [...]
