Clout/SA was officially launched to the local and international market in the last week of June 2021. Clout/SA is a purpose-first enterprise, creative agency, and business-to-business (B2B) market-maker for South African design. The aim is to promote South Africa’s creativity, craftsmanship and heritage. Additionally, creating opportunities for collaboration between corporates and designers is a main driver. Clout/SA’s founding project and one of its ongoing directives is the Nando’s Design Programme. As part of the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout/SA developed and facilitated one of South Africa’s top biennial design competitions, the Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search. This competition has launched and supported local design careers, including that of Mash T. design’s Thabiso Mjo, one of the first winners of the competition in 2016. Mjo has described the competition as having “changed the trajectory of my entire life”. In 2020, she went on to make history when she became the first South African designer ever to have her work placed in the permanent collection of the Louvre’s Musée des Arts Décoratifs in Paris, France. Clout/SA’s work on the Nando’s Design Programme led to the development and launch of the Nando’s Portal to Africa in 2018. The portal is an online shopping [...]

Design Indaba’s annual endeavour to find the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa manifests as a competition open to public votes and an exhibition. The competition has been running consecutively for the last 13 years, with this year’s iteration supported by Mercedes-Benz South Africa. A range of ten incredible designs were nominated by 10 public personalities, with each vying for the coveted title. The Delicate Bracelet, which was nominated by Blessing Ngobeni, was voted in as the uncontested winner by members of the public. The Delicate Bracelet was made by the non-profit community project Izandla Zethu that is based in Walmer, Port Elizabeth. The NPO creates employment and develops skills to empower young people. The bracelet is made using corrugated iron, a material commonly used to build shelters in informal settlements. It symbolises the transformation of poverty into beauty through creativity. “Other than the fact that it is handmade from recycled material, I like the fact that it is made from corrugated iron sheet – a piece of material that we, as South Africans, are familiar with and many of us hold dear,” explains Ngobeni. “The material of the bracelet got me thinking about the meaning of beauty, and even adds to my [...]

Design Indaba’s yearly lineup is a highly anticipated event on the creative calendar. Having established itself internationally as one of the premier multidisciplinary programmes in the world, it consistently draws the globe’s luminaries to its stage. But it’s not just inspiration for inspiration’s sake that the conference advocates. With ‘a better world through creativity’ as their guiding principle, founder Ravi Naidoo and his team have continually shown their commitment to positive change through design-led thinking. In line with this powerful impetus, they’ve created a legacy for including speakers in the programme whose work seeks to better the world we live in – whether through technological advances, environmental advocacy, or simply social change that fosters healthier communities. The event can boast star-studded speaker alumni – leaders and achievers in a variety of fields – that constitute the who’s who of international design. Anyone from Thomas Heatherwick to Patricia Urquiola, Tom Dixon, Brian Eno, Yves Behar, Jaime Hayon, and scores of other global luminaries have graced Design Indaba’s stage to share their progressive work in genres as diverse as business innovation, product design, costume design, performance art, architecture, food design – and many more. The common denominator among its myriad speakers and [...]

The PPC Imaginarium Awards was established by PPC Ltd as a means to give emerging designers and artists the opportunity to showcase their talent and creative thinking by using cement as their primary medium. Now in its third year, the competition is the most supportive of its kind in the country and has seen many of its past entrants and finalists go on to become recognised in the art and business community. The PPC Imaginarium encompasses six categories, namely, architecture, fashion, film, industrial design, jewellery and sculpture. This year, the competition has assembled an extraordinary group of some of the industry’s most influential and outstanding creatives on the national and regional judging panel, who will evaluate the various category submissions, choose category finalists and the overall winner. Fashion and design consultant Allana Finley, will fill the role of judging the fashion category and that of national judge. Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US, Finley has worked on fashion brands such as Eileen Fisher, Tiffany & Co. and Gucci America, and is currently a board member of the Museum of African Design. Over the past 13 years, her focus has been on telling the story of the African continent in [...]

Business of Design, the conference aimed at creatively revolutionising the way you work, returns to Cape Town and Johannesburg this October for its Spring 2015 edition. This third installment of the bi-annual programme boasts an all-new talk schedule, including first-time Business of Design speakers and fresh topics, with the Cape Town conference hosting guest international speaker Jim Brett, President of West Elm, the US-founded homeware retail store. Business of Design is a two-day conference led by top industry experts and design professionals to guide, inspire and offer practical tools to change the way people do business. Says Co-Founder Laurence Brick, MD of Platform Creative Agency and Creative Director of 100% Design South Africa: ‘We’re proud to already have had 69 of South Africa’s best minds speak on our stage during the previous two conferences in both cities.
Well-known Cape Town restaurant, La Mouette, has recently been given an image overhaul by established Cape Town interior designer, Liam Mooney. The hugely popular La Mouette – co-owned by chef Henry Vigar, his wife Mari, who heads up front of house, as well as their long-time friend, Gerrit Bruwer – first opened in May 2010. Proving to be an instant success with the Cape Town dining public, the restaurant is renowned for its tasting menu, which changes seasonally, and its innovative take on classic French cuisine that chef Henry has bought to the establishment. With a long history of working in Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK, including Auberge du Lac, La Noisette and Kensington Place, Henry’s talent and training are evident in the highly praised menu offerings as well as the exceptional wine pairings and broad selection. After having built up a devoted following in the last five years, the owners felt that a new interior setting was needed in order to fully reflect the integral components that make La Mouette such a unique dining spot in Cape Town – primarily, these are creativity, quality and innovation. It was with these fundamentals in mind that they commissioned Mooney to [...]

South Africa’s most creative young design project has just been revealed: the overall winner of the inaugural PPC Imaginarium Awards was announced on 05 March 2015 in Cape Town. The competition announcement took place at the Youngblood Foundation Gallery on Bree St, and the event formed part of the popular First Thursdays initiative. In its inaugural year, the PPC Imaginarium has sought to establish and unearth unknown creatives across six disciplines (film, industrial design, fashion, jewellery, architecture and sculpture). The competition received a staggering 477 entries from South Africa’s best and brightest designers and artists, who all used concrete as a medium of expression. Winners in six categories were carefully selected and their work showcased at the UJ Gallery in Johannesburg. Thereafter the exhibition, which was curated by Stephen Hobbs, travelled to the Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town where it was put on display for the duration of the event from 27 February 01 March, before opening at Youngblood until 28 March 2015. The overall winning design – a concrete speaker – comes from the industrial design category. Designers Martin Bolton and Craig Tyndall used acrylic and leather to transform concrete from “being an everyday construction material into a [...]
