The highly successful Cape Town Art Fair (CTAF) is returning in February 2017. This 5th edition promises to be bigger and bolder in size and scope, exhibiting an extraordinary blend of top quality contemporary artworks from galleries in Africa and around the world. In keeping with its growth and positioning, the organisers have appointed a chief art curator – globally recognised, South African born curator, Tumelo Mosaka. Mosaka is returning to the country after more than a decade to spearhead Cape Town Art Fair’s rise to prominence on the international art fair scene. Currently working as an independent curator in New York, he has had an illustrious career in the United States, with positions as Associate Curator of Exhibitions at the Brooklyn Museum and Contemporary Art Curator at the Krannert Art Museum in Champaign, Illinois. Mosaka’s curatorial projects have explored global and transnational artistic production especially from Africa, the Caribbean and North America, examining themes such as racial injustice, migration, and identity, some of the most urgent social concerns of our time. His past exhibitions include Andrew Lyght: Full Circle at the Dorsky Art Museum (2016), described by the New York Times as “stunning” and “long overdue”; Poetics of Relation [...]

Would-be jet setters need not check into hip hotels in London, New York, Sydney or Tokyo in order to pick up on the freshest global trends in hospitality design. But they should definitely make a point of checking out this year’s 100% Design South Africa, held in association with Dauphin HumanDesign® Group. The show takes place from 6 to 10 August 2015 at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, alongside Decorex Joburg. Now in its second year, South Africa’s only international design show is again presenting a superbly curated showcase of leaders in the field. A definite highlight, whether for globetrotters or simply armchair travellers with a love of design, is the exhibition 100% Hotel. 100% Hotel is being presented in collaboration with esteemed Johannesburg design business Generation, founded by prominent designer Julia Day some 25 years ago. Invited to showcase “a cutting-edge and unique hotel space”, the Generation team has partnered with iconic Italian furniture brand De Padova. “For our interpretation of a hotel space, we have decided to feature a lobby area,” says Day. “The lobby is an essential part of the overall design because it is the first space that hotel clientele are exposed to. Criteria for selection includes the products having to be made or designed in South Africa, and to be in production in 2015. 100 Beautiful Things is curated by 100% Design South Africa Programme Director Cathy O’Clery, who says the story behind the object is always highly influential when making her selection. Likewise, there are pieces that simply resonate because they “instantly touch the heart”. The purpose of 100 Beautiful Things, O’Clery explains, is to share “the phenomenal array” of design in this country, which is accepted and appreciated at a global [...]

Nurturing future stars and growing the design industry lies at the heart of the ethos behind 100% Design South Africa, which takes place from 6 to 10 August 2015 at Gallagher Convention Centre in Johannesburg, alongside Decorex Joburg. South Africa’s only international design show, 100% Design South Africa, in conjunction with headline sponsor Dauphin HumanDesign® Group, promises to enthrall visitors with its superbly curated displays and a lineup that comprises top global design brands alongside local design stars. In addition to the established South African names and international design luminaries participating at this leading design show, some of the country’s brightest young talents are given a platform to showcase their work. Each year the curators, Creative Director Laurence Brick and Programme Director Cathy O’Clery, choose a designer whom they see as a future design leader. Last year it was Cape Town-based surface designer and artist Atang Tshikare, a self-developed multidisciplinary artist whose work combines line drawing and street art, working across mediums from pencil and marker to acrylic and aerosol. This year’s featured designer is Renée Rossouw, a recently graduated architect who is already making an impact on the design scene with her bold, colourful graphic patterns applied to a [...]
