BASA CEO, Michelle Constant says: “The arts as shared currency and the value of the arts to business and society are at the heart of what the Colloquium is about. Importantly we look forward to a day of learning, and importantly fun.” PPC Imaginarium Awards Director and Architect: Daniel Van Der Merwe New York-based Laura Callanan will give the keynote address.
South Africa’s most supportive art and design competition, the PPC Imaginarium Awards, announced its Overall Winner, Category Winners and Runners-up at a gala event hosted on 18 May 2017 at the UJ Art Gallery in Johannesburg. The winners were selected from the competition’s 55 finalists who submitted their concrete art and design works across the categories of Sculpture, Industrial Design, Fashion, Jewellery and Film. (No Architecture submissions made it to the finalist round this year). Last year, up-and-coming jeweller Mignon Daubermann scooped the top prize with her exquisitely crafted pair of tinted cement rings. This year, emerging artist Mziwoxolo Makalima impressed the judges with his thought-provoking sculpture submission titled “Doubt-Queuing”, securing him the prestigious titles of 2017 PPC Imaginarium Overall Winner and Sculpture Category Winner, as well as a total cash prize of R150 000. Makalima’s sculpture, which is fashioned out of concrete and mild steel, aims to be the voice of a voiceless, subjugated society. “Doubt-Queuing” represents a group of community members who have stood for so long waiting and hoping for change, and who have remained as strong as concrete. The concrete represents the strength of the community that has had to endure a queue of unfulfilled promises [...]

The PPC Imaginarium Awards was established by PPC Ltd as a means to give emerging designers and artists the opportunity to showcase their talent and creative thinking by using cement as their primary medium. Now in its third year, the competition is the most supportive of its kind in the country and has seen many of its past entrants and finalists go on to become recognised in the art and business community. The PPC Imaginarium encompasses six categories, namely, architecture, fashion, film, industrial design, jewellery and sculpture. This year, the competition has assembled an extraordinary group of some of the industry’s most influential and outstanding creatives on the national and regional judging panel, who will evaluate the various category submissions, choose category finalists and the overall winner. Fashion and design consultant Allana Finley, will fill the role of judging the fashion category and that of national judge. Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US, Finley has worked on fashion brands such as Eileen Fisher, Tiffany & Co. and Gucci America, and is currently a board member of the Museum of African Design. Over the past 13 years, her focus has been on telling the story of the African continent in [...]

A must for architects, industrial and interior designers, this year’s 100% Design South Africa put all the right building blocks in place to stimulate and inspire trade professionals who focus on exterior and interior construction. One of the many highlights of the 2016 event was the carefully curated 100% Concrete Lab, presented by PPC Group Services (Pty) Ltd, the leading supplier of cement in southern Africa. The forward-thinking 100% Concrete Lab was a new addition to the show, and focuses on exciting innovations in the world of cement – with anything from 3D-printed cement to translucent concrete being presented as the design possibilities and materials of the very near future. The aim of the lab is to stimulate experimentation and new thinking around the use of concrete. “Innovation is recognised by PPC as a key driver for economic growth and development and to provide solutions to the key issues facing people, communities and our country as we all strive for a better and more sustainable future – a “Better Life for All”, says PPC’s resident architect Daniel van der Merwe. “It also allows PPC to promote the use of concrete as a design material and encourage experimentation using Portland [...]

South Africa’s most creative young design project has just been revealed: the overall winner of the inaugural PPC Imaginarium Awards was announced on 05 March 2015 in Cape Town. The competition announcement took place at the Youngblood Foundation Gallery on Bree St, and the event formed part of the popular First Thursdays initiative. In its inaugural year, the PPC Imaginarium has sought to establish and unearth unknown creatives across six disciplines (film, industrial design, fashion, jewellery, architecture and sculpture). The competition received a staggering 477 entries from South Africa’s best and brightest designers and artists, who all used concrete as a medium of expression. Winners in six categories were carefully selected and their work showcased at the UJ Gallery in Johannesburg. Thereafter the exhibition, which was curated by Stephen Hobbs, travelled to the Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town where it was put on display for the duration of the event from 27 February 01 March, before opening at Youngblood until 28 March 2015. The overall winning design – a concrete speaker – comes from the industrial design category. Designers Martin Bolton and Craig Tyndall used acrylic and leather to transform concrete from “being an everyday construction material into a [...]
