Plascon has announced its 2nd annual Colour Combination of the Year, comprising a trio of related colours designed to reflect the mood of 2023. Intended to bring joy back home with a harmony of hues, the Plascon Colour Combination 2023 is all about capturing simple joie de vivre. With a meticulously selected, sun-drenched palette that casts a radiant glow, Plascon is taking us to a place that, although familiar, feels energising. Plascon has drawn on extensive research into directional developments in regional interiors, architecture, product design and fashion to present these three colours instead of a single ‘Colour of the Year’ as it did previously. In 2022, Plascon became the first coatings company in the local industry to present a Colour Combination of the Year and has continued this new approach for 2023. Its rationale for choosing three colours instead of merely one is based on the industry practice of a 60-30-10 design scheme. This scheme suggests that 60% of a space should consist of a dominant colour, 30% a secondary colour, and 10% an accent colour. In structuring the colour combination in these ratios, Plascon makes it easier for architects, interior design and decor professionals, and members of the [...]

Design Indaba 2020 marks the 25th anniversary of this flagship platform. It’s a time to celebrate the journey from a humble South African conference to a globally renowned ‘Think tank – Do tank’. These 25 years include the 10×10 Low Cost Housing Project, catalysing Africa’s first museum of contemporary art, the majestic Arch for Arch on the oldest avenue in South Africa, founding Africa’s most prolific creative incubator: the Emerging Creatives programme (propelling the careers of over 500 creatives), and realising over 250 impact-led projects. But Design Indaba does not see the anniversary as a time to lean back, rather as a time to look ahead. Continuing to ask, as per its founding mission: how do we build a better world through creativity? With roots firmly planted in Africa, Design Indaba remain steadfast in the belief that creativity can be the X-factor that elevates this nation and those throughout Africa. Where to start? It is well accepted that tourism has been a silver lining in a lukewarm economy. Tourism is an impetus for radical growth. Tourism is one of the major players in international commerce, and represents one of the main income sources for many developing countries. South Africa has one of [...]

Reed Exhibitions confirmed that Decorex Durban will be postponed to 2021. Dates for 2021 have been confirmed as 19-22 March 2021. The decision is a result of multiple discussions with the industry as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 escalation and upon advice of local and national health authorities. In addition, the multitude of national events in the décor, design and lifestyle calendar that are planned for the latter part of the year do not favour another consumer and trade show for the industry before 2021. In the interim, digital platforms are being explored to support and connect our partners during these unprecedented times. Exhibitors and Buyers are being contacted directly and we ask them to be patient with us as we do that. Our thoughts are with everyone who has been impacted by COVID-19 and we thank all our customers and partners for their support.

Reed Exhibitions confirmed that Decorex Cape Town, originally planned for 30 April – 3 May 2020, will not be taking place this year. New dates have been confirmed for 2021 and the show will run from 16 -20 June 2021 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC). The decision is a result of multiple discussions with the greater industry as a result of the impact of the COVID-19 escalation and upon the advice of local and national health authorities. Speaking of the decision not to run the show in 2020 once the COVID-19 outbreak has subsided, Sian Cullingworth, Portfolio Director at Decorex Africa, stated: “Decorex Africa seeks to act in the best interests of our industry and our society. While we understand the valuable role that Decorex Cape Town plays, the multitude of national events in the décor, design and lifestyle calendar that are planned for the latter part of the year do not favour another consumer and trade show for the industry before 2021.
The start of a new decade has brought with it a wave of inspiration, and with that a collection of new designs from renowned South African lighting company willowlamp. The Radial is one of the new pieces making its design debut this year. In the spirit of evolution, founder and creative director Adam Hoets has built on some of his existing designs with new interpretations stemming from these existing pieces. ‘The Radial is a logical extension of the Lineal – essentially a round version of this piece,’ says Hoets. The Lineal – one of the brand’s most contemporary and more recent pieces, plays with a more minimal and pared-down aesthetic, an example of how the designer has steadily developed willowlamp’s identity. The inspiration behind the Radial hails from a similar source to the Lineal – which comes from the idea of creating a textured grid around a repetitive matrix of lights, and adding chain in layers and in different metallic finishes to add a richness and warm glow. Like virtually all of willowlamp’s pieces, The Radial also draws on the natural world. ‘The Radial refers to the eternal, cyclic ring of life,’ says Hoets. The pervasive popularity of curvaceous shapes [...]

To mark the 25th anniversary of the renowned Design Indaba Conference, the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout, has honoured the founder of this world-class event, Ravi Naidoo, with an annual residency programme in his name. The announcement of the new Ravi Naidoo Residency for Emerging Creatives was made at the recent Design Indaba Conference, which took place from 26-28 February 2020 at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town, and was broadcast via simulcast to Johannesburg, Durban, Potchefstroom, Port Elizabeth, Namibia and Nairobi. This year, and each year going forward, Clout will select one stand-out creative from the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives class of that year to be the recipient of this Residency. The Design Indaba Emerging Creatives is a longstanding programme spearheaded by Design Indaba and supported by the Department of Arts and Culture. Each year, the Design Indaba selects a class of 50 successful applicants who receive a plethora of support, advice and benefits from the Design Indaba. This ranges from return flights to Cape Town from their home city, and accommodation for the duration of Design Indaba, to tickets to attend the Design Indaba simulcast in Cape Town, the exhibition and display of their work during the Design [...]

AAAA, a co-operation of artisans from Mali, is launching a pop-up exhibition of contemporary African designs based on traditional techniques in collaboration with Cécile & Boyd. The display will run at Cécile & Boyd’s landmark Kloof Nek Road destination in Cape Town, presenting an opportunity for local interior designers, decorators and art lovers to experience leading decorative homeware from the continent. The pop-up will open to the public from 26 February 2020 onwards and will run for two weeks. AAAA and Cecile & Boyd will present a concise collection of handcrafted Textile Totems that will be showcased to the South African market for the first time. Playing on a love of symbolism and design, AAAA stands for Atelier Autodidacts Anti-Algorithms. The co-op aims to celebrate traditional artisanal methods, which includes championing the original Malian textile artform of Bogolan. Bogolan (which means made of mud) is a traditional handmade Malian cotton fabric (called finimugu) that is dyed with fermented mud. AAAA incorporates Bogolan, also known as Bògòlanfini, into their designs and textures, and it is some of these works that will be shown in Cape Town. Visitors can expect to see an edited selection of striking Textile Totems in eight distinct [...]

The South African events industry is a thriving one, with a host of events and exhibitions happening each month at exhibition venues and conference halls across the country – with each major city centre boasting showgrounds of international quality. To stand out in this cluttered terrain does require excellence – both in terms of vision and execution, and an ongoing commitment to both. It is for this reason that Decorex Africa, its national events and exhibitors, excelled at the recent AAXO Roar Awards. Held on the evening of Friday 31 January 2020, at the Gallagher Convention Centre in Midrand, Johannesburg, this year’s event gathered 300 industry practitioners and guests under one roof, all dressed according to the James Bond-inspired theme: “Licence to Win”! The annual awards are administered by the Association of African Exhibition Organisers (AAXO) and are hosted together with EXSA under the Exhibition Industry Alliance (EIA) banner. ROAR is an acronym for Respect, Opportunities, Achievements and Recognition, and, according to AAXO, the “awards are aimed at acknowledging and recognising excellence in exhibition organisation.” Entries were judged on their successful exhibition strategy incorporating marketing, public relations, operations and activation. Decorex Africa and its associated exhibitors were recognised a total [...]

Textural surfaces, particularly walls and floors, will play a special role in interior design in 2020, says Creative Director Anita Bloom, author of the Decorex Africa Trend Report 2020 – the definitive guide to what’s in vogue. As our longing for a more tactile, less technologically invasive world grows, we’ll gravitate towards a cosier design aesthetic. This is the message delivered by Anita Bloom, Creative Director of Decorex Africa and 100% Design South Africa, in the latest Decorex Africa Trend Report 2020 – the authoritative guide to décor, interior design and lifestyle trends. The New Nordic and Contemporary Organic design styles that are likely to be in vogue next year move away from the high-gloss finishes of clinical Scandi design and adopt more textural elements in the home. These include lime-washed walls, micro-cement, wooden floors with an irregular grain, worn leather and stone. “Surfaces that fade into the background will have little appeal – we anticipate a proliferation of 3D wallpapers, 3D-effect glass and wavy surfaces that will make our living spaces more visually interesting,” says Bloom. “Marble cladding will also be popular – marble art is making a comeback, with either statement pieces or accents expected to cause a [...]
