As technology advances and our understanding of sustainability and social responsibility evolves, design will need to adapt and innovate to meet new challenges. By exploring the Future of Design at Decorex Cape Town (22-25 June, Cape Town International Convention Centre) and Joburg (3-6 August, Sandton Convention Centre), visitors can gain a better understanding of the role of design in the exciting possibilities and opportunities that lie ahead. ‘We believe that design is one of the most powerful tools we have to shape the future,’ says Sandra Barrow, Decorex Africa’s Portfolio Director. Decorex Cape Town is set to showcase the Future of Design, with seating partner Wunders, through a captivating blend of physical and digital displays, collaborative workshops, and live demonstrations. Cape Town is the forerunner to a much bigger theatre and curated exhibition that will be one of the main features of the combined Design Joburg/100% Design Africa Hall at Decorex Joburg. Once the Future of Design has debuted in Cape Town, a fresh lineup of speakers and exhibitors will be curated for the Joburg show. Over the course of four days, Cape Town attendees who purchase general admission tickets to the show can access a range of free talks [...]

It is resoundingly clear that we need to act in very meaningful ways to address the issues that face us as a nation, and a planet. But we are also drowning in opinions masquerading as facts; not to mention the politics. Enter the fourth annual #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL, a local public event that consciously gathers together a diverse range of people, who may not often or easily come together, to have the difficult and uncomfortable conversations about South Africa’s biggest challenges. Secondly, the festival aims to support South African innovators and entrepreneurs to action their solutions to these issues. This year’s #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL runs from 20 – 23 September 2021, and takes participants on a deep dive into the major fault lines in South Africa – brutally exposed by the impact of COVID-19 – in order to stimulate ideas and action that result in inclusion and change. Private sector businesses, communities, designers, thinkers, do-ers, visionaries and policy makers from across the country and beyond are invited to participate in this collaborative public event. The “unconference” style of this year’s festival allows for small physical gatherings and site visits, online conversations, and facilitated design thinking sprints, all aimed at supporting local innovators [...]

Business of Design, the conference aimed at creatively revolutionising the way you work, returns to Cape Town and Johannesburg this October for its Spring 2015 edition. This third installment of the bi-annual programme boasts an all-new talk schedule, including first-time Business of Design speakers and fresh topics, with the Cape Town conference hosting guest international speaker Jim Brett, President of West Elm, the US-founded homeware retail store. Business of Design is a two-day conference led by top industry experts and design professionals to guide, inspire and offer practical tools to change the way people do business. Says Co-Founder Laurence Brick, MD of Platform Creative Agency and Creative Director of 100% Design South Africa: ‘We’re proud to already have had 69 of South Africa’s best minds speak on our stage during the previous two conferences in both cities. The networking that has taken place between them and the over 500 alumni delegates we now have has been invaluable.’ ‘Business of Design appeals to all industries,’ adds Co-Founder Trevyn McGowan of Source, Southern Guild and GUILD. ‘We’ve not only had designers and architects attend, but people from retail, accounting and marketing. Because the programme is geared towards both business skills and design thinking, it bridges the divide between the two, encouraging new ways of going about one’s [...]

South Africa’s most creative young design project has just been revealed: the overall winner of the inaugural PPC Imaginarium Awards was announced on 05 March 2015 in Cape Town. The competition announcement took place at the Youngblood Foundation Gallery on Bree St, and the event formed part of the popular First Thursdays initiative. In its inaugural year, the PPC Imaginarium has sought to establish and unearth unknown creatives across six disciplines (film, industrial design, fashion, jewellery, architecture and sculpture). The competition received a staggering 477 entries from South Africa’s best and brightest designers and artists, who all used concrete as a medium of expression. Winners in six categories were carefully selected and their work showcased at the UJ Gallery in Johannesburg. Thereafter the exhibition, which was curated by Stephen Hobbs, travelled to the Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town where it was put on display for the duration of the event from 27 February 01 March, before opening at Youngblood until 28 March 2015. The overall winning design – a concrete speaker – comes from the industrial design category. Designers Martin Bolton and Craig Tyndall used acrylic and leather to transform concrete from “being an everyday construction material into a [...]
