For cocktail lovers looking for an affordably priced, but high quality gin, there hasn’t been a huge amount of variety on store shelves. Until now. Enter Hobbs, an exciting new player on the South African gin scene. As pioneers in the gin industry, Hobbs founders Lucy Beard and Leigh Lisk know their craft. Not only do they intimately understand the technical process of distilling, infusing and bottling, but also, more importantly now than ever, they have a deep understanding of the market and what gin drinkers want. This wealth of experience and expertise prompted the development of Hobbs, a brand-new range aimed at a younger, aspirational audience looking for a quality product without the higher price tag. Although South Africa has a plethora of artisanal gins on the market, not many are accessibly priced. Hobbs thus responds cleverly to a previously neglected segment of the gin-enjoying market. ‘We felt that there was a gap in the market for a craft gin, that, while still good quality, wasn’t in the super premium space,’ explains Beard on Hobbs’ unique positioning. While priced much more affordably than premium gins on the market, Hobbs doesn’t skimp on depth of flavour and attention to detail [...]

Having cut their teeth on gin, so to speak, Hope Distillery founders Lucy Beard and Leigh Lisk have successfully branched out into other artisanal liquors in recent years – they distill their own as well as producing products for other brands. Their newly branded Hope Small Batch Vodka, distilled from a grape base sourced in the Western Cape, is a delicate balance of pot-stilled and rectified spirit. A natural complement to the initial products in the range – the process of making vodka is not unlike that of making gin – the vodka neatly dovetails into their existing production line and long-term vision. “Gin starts life as vodka – essentially a high-strength neutral alcohol – so it made sense for us to make vodka, considering that we were already making gin,” says Lucy. Where it differs is that, for gin, you simply distill the vodka one more time together with the botanicals, one of which is the juniper berry, and this is what defines it as gin. Vodka can be produced using a variety of raw materials, but the Hope team initially decided to concentrate on a grape-based spirit for theirs. “We thought about releasing both a grain and a [...]

Hope’s approach has always been incredibly hands-on, from its origins as a small-batch distillery started by husband and wife team Leigh Lisk and Lucy Beard, to the fact that the owners live on the premises and oversee the operations closely. Their experiential tasting room offers a real up-close-and-personal taste of the brand. Located in the industrial Cape Town area of Salt River – a suburb that in the past decade has become a hub for creative enterprises and entrepreneurs – it’s a state-of-the-art facility with homely charm. “Initially, our priority was to get the distillery up and running, but once it was well established we were able to turn our attention to the tasting room. We wanted to reflect the spirit of our products and bring a more distinctive yet modern look to the space,” explains Lucy. It made sense to time the upgrade with the release of Hope’s updated branding – which reflects a crisp and contemporary new aesthetic. The couple was also cognisant of injecting the same entrepreneurial spirit with which they founded their brand into the space via their design choices. “It’s important to us to support local, and so we sourced from some of our favourite [...]

If you’re struggling to get into the Christmas spirit this year, Hope Distillery has just the ticket. The artisanal gin mavens have distilled three limited release gins, specially inspired by Christmas past. These Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh gins are perfect for a variety of holiday occasions, each one distinct and deliciously different. ‘Gold’ is literally gold-tinged as a result of gentle aging – it’s infused with lots of festive orange peel, cinnamon, nutmeg and almond and you can garnish it with a slice of orange. It’s perfect for those celebratory moments. ‘Frankincense’ has the resin as its signature botanical and as a result has smoky incense notes, with cinnamon, coriander and cumin adding to its unique flavour. Garnish with orange zest for that extra zing and enjoy after a holiday feast. Mysterious myrrh lends this fragrant ‘Myrrh’ gin a Christmas note, which is complemented by cloves, allspice, star anise and nutmeg. Garnish with rosemary and enjoy with your Christmas lunch. Hope has packaged 200ml of Gold, Frankincense and Myrrh in one gorgeous gift pack, available for the festive season only, so visit Hope Distillery and selected bottle stores in Cape Town now to make sure you don’t miss out!

One of the pioneers in the South African gin game, Hope Distillery (formerly known as Hope on Hopkins) launched its gins at a time when crafted spirits were a relatively novel and uncommon occurrence on bottle store and supermarket shelves. Ahead of the curve, its founders Leigh Lisk and Lucy Beard started small in 2014 with a niche selection of gins that expressed the zeitgeist of the time – small-batch liquors inspired by botanical ingredients. Hope was the first licensed gin distillery to open in Cape Town and its stills proudly bear the original registered numbers 001 and 002. Lisk and Beard left a corporate life in London behind to return to South Africa and pursue their passion. They quickly made a name for themselves amongst the discerning gin-drinking community and their product started to appear on store shelves and restaurant and bar menus across Cape Town. Having come a long way since that early leap of faith and period of exploration, Hope is now distilling not only its own gin but gin products for other brands, too – including local labels like Musgrave, Bloedlemoen and Clemengold. The distillery has expanded from its gin roots to embrace other spirits, like [...]
