Southern Guild is pleased to announce the opening of Bifurcation by Adam Birch, running from 25 April until 12 July at GUILD in the Silo District of the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. This is the first solo exhibition for the artist, whose functional timber sculptures have become highly sought after at international design fairs and auctions. Adam grew up on a large farm in the Cape Winelands, where his love of trees began as a child, playing in the forests. He completed a Fine Art degree in 2000, majoring in Applied Graphics, but always dreamed of becoming a full-time sculptor. Shortly thereafter he became a tree surgeon, and began to work in his spare time with pieces from the dead trees he was cutting down, transforming them into innovative sculpted furniture. A passionate environmentalist, Adam cuts down only alien tree species and uses indigenous wood from trees that have already fallen. The pieces in Bifurcation have all been carved from the part of the tree that carpenters usually discard: the fork. At this junction – where the trunk bifurcates into two branches – the wood grain becomes twisted and dense, making it difficult to cut. But in the anatomy of [...]

Image credit: Justine Mahoney Across the African continent, over 80% of school-ready girls enrol in grade one, but by the time they reach university, only 8% are successful in continuing their tertiary education. BRAVE is changing this. BRAVE uses the power of travel to create opportunities for girls living in some of the most dangerous communities across Africa to complete their education and become effective, ethical leaders, explorers and advocates for themselves and others. Following the overwhelming success of the inaugural BRAVE dinner and exhibit in July 2016, GUILD is hosting the second annual BRAVE exhibit and auction at its flagship store and gallery in the new silo district in Cape Town. On Thursday, 23 November, guests will be treated to live music, with canapés by The Yard and drinks by Spice Route, followed by enthralling stories from extraordinary explorers, leaders and adventurers, including two of the all-female Black Mamba anti-poaching team; acclaimed artist Justine Mahoney; National Geographic Explorer of the Year, paleoanthropologist Marina Elliot; visionary GUILD director, Trevyn McGowan; the first female conservation student from African Leadership University (ALU); and Rock Girl spoken-word poet Miche Williams. At the auction, artists and designers, along with luminaries from across South Africa, [...]
