At a gala event held at the University of Johannesburg Art Gallery on the evening of 4 April 2018, upcoming young artist Chris Soal was announced as the overall winner of the PPC Imaginarium Awards 2018. The 24-year-old sculptor, a fine arts graduate from the University of the Witwatersrand, garnered R150 000 in prize money, and participation in an eight-month-long nationwide travelling exhibition. Soal’s winning piece, entitled “Imposed Structure (Deflated)”, consists of cement cast into the shape of a deflated and scuffed soccer ball, through which a metal rod has been forced. The weight of the cement causes the rod to bend and pull, signifying the weight not only of deflated childhood dreams, but of the inherent danger of “play” within the city. The work speaks not only to the realities of growing up in a city environment, where soccer is played in the streets, on concrete and tar, but also to the relationship of soccer to South African industry. One example of this relationship is the 2010 FIFA World Cup. To this day, questions are posed regarding the event’s benefit for the country. Soal’s artwork was chosen as the winner by the PPC Imaginarium Awards national judging panel. The [...]

This year’s judges are established in a range of disciplines, including research, design, curation, activism and education. They bring a wealth of skills as well as several decades’ worth of collective experience. Regional judges select finalists from the work submitted in all categories, excluding architecture. The number of judging stations ensures that the PPC Imaginarium Awards are inclusive and representative. All judging is blind and unbiased.
South African architect Handre de la Rey was named the 2017 PPC Imaginarium Awards Industrial Design Category Winner for his pair of concrete sunglasses, titled CS Project. Since then, he has launched the design, along with his studio 20 EIGHT, for commercial retail, making it the world’s first pair of concrete sunglasses available to the public for purchase. Although other examples of concrete sunglasses exist, from studios such as XYZ Integrated Architecture and artists such as the UK’s Daniel Sinsel, this is the first pair that has successfully been brought to the market. CS Project is the latest concept by De La Rey, who set out to explore the possibility of creating a pair of ultra-thin sunglasses that push the perceived boundaries of cement. CS Project has gained recognition due to being showcased at a number of prestigious galleries and events throughout the year as part of PPC Imaginarium’s travelling nationwide exhibition. The competition strives to assist emerging artists and designers in launching their careers through mentorships, cash prizes to the value of R500 000 and public exposure. It is South Africa’s most supportive art and design competition and challenges emerging creatives to express their talents by incorporating Portland cement-based [...]

The PPC Imaginarium Awards was established by PPC Ltd as a means to give emerging designers and artists the opportunity to showcase their talent and creative thinking by using cement as their primary medium. Now in its third year, the competition is the most supportive of its kind in the country and has seen many of its past entrants and finalists go on to become recognised in the art and business community. The PPC Imaginarium encompasses six categories, namely, architecture, fashion, film, industrial design, jewellery and sculpture. This year, the competition has assembled an extraordinary group of some of the industry’s most influential and outstanding creatives on the national and regional judging panel, who will evaluate the various category submissions, choose category finalists and the overall winner. Fashion and design consultant Allana Finley, will fill the role of judging the fashion category and that of national judge. Hailing from Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in the US, Finley has worked on fashion brands such as Eileen Fisher, Tiffany & Co. and Gucci America, and is currently a board member of the Museum of African Design. Over the past 13 years, her focus has been on telling the story of the African continent in [...]

Well-known Cape Town restaurant, La Mouette, has recently been given an image overhaul by established Cape Town interior designer, Liam Mooney. The hugely popular La Mouette – co-owned by chef Henry Vigar, his wife Mari, who heads up front of house, as well as their long-time friend, Gerrit Bruwer – first opened in May 2010. Proving to be an instant success with the Cape Town dining public, the restaurant is renowned for its tasting menu, which changes seasonally, and its innovative take on classic French cuisine that chef Henry has bought to the establishment. With a long history of working in Michelin-starred restaurants in the UK, including Auberge du Lac, La Noisette and Kensington Place, Henry’s talent and training are evident in the highly praised menu offerings as well as the exceptional wine pairings and broad selection. After having built up a devoted following in the last five years, the owners felt that a new interior setting was needed in order to fully reflect the integral components that make La Mouette such a unique dining spot in Cape Town – primarily, these are creativity, quality and innovation. It was with these fundamentals in mind that they commissioned Mooney to [...]

What do un-established artists and designers need more than anything to help launch their careers? Financial support? Tick! Exposure? Tick! Recognition? Mentorship? Guidance? Tick! Tick! Tick! The PPC Imaginarium – an exciting competition that seeks to rocket boost emerging artists and designers – is ticking all the boxes… The initiative is noteworthy for offering the country’s richest cash prize ever for an arts competition boasting over R500 000 in prize money. But it is even more remarkable for its ambition of providing a nurturing launch platform for its winners – with the aim of establishing them as leaders in their field. The inaugural PPC Imaginarium Awards cement the parent company PPC Ltd’s position as one of the largest and most exciting promoters and patrons of the arts and design in South Africa, a company that has previously been awarded for its innovation and support of the arts. ‘Through the PPC Imaginarium Awards we aim to maximise opportunities for young emerging artists and creative in the arts and design disciplines in South Africa,’ states PPC Architect Daniel van der Merwe. Expanding from its longstanding PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards established in 1992, the PPC Imaginarium Awards provide a platform for designers and [...]
