Award-winning design studio Inhouse was commissioned by the Berman Bros Group (BBG) to design the interiors of a series of two- and three-bedroom apartments situated in a new luxury development located on St John’s Road in Sea Point, Cape Town. Rather than creating carbon copies and giving all 16 apartments the same design treatment, Inhouse has created two distinct styles to cater for different tastes. There is also a penthouse, the 17th apartment, which will be given its own unique interior. Each of the 16 three- and two-bedroom apartments feature an open-plan living area and bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, but the contrasting interiors of the units create starkly different atmospheres. Eight of the apartments have a modern contemporary aesthetic with a predominantly dark palette, while the other eight apartments boast a classic contemporary direction and a neutral colour palette. This gives potential owners the option to choose the interior they prefer while demonstrating the power of interior design to transform a space. In each of the classic contemporary apartments, marble floors feature throughout the spacious open-plan living area, which comprises living, dining and kitchen zones. A subtle mix of classic and contemporary elements with soft, delicate textures makes the interiors [...]

Already nearing its second decade, Travelstart remains one of Africa’s leading online travel agencies and booking websites. Having recently relocated its Cape Town headquarters to a two-and-a-half-storey set of offices in Longkloof Studios, located just off the bustling hub that is Kloof Street; it is natural that the company should wish to set itself up in a working space that would reflect its efficiency and modernity. The initial interior design concept was inspired by the office featured in Nancy Meyers’ 2015 comedy film The Intern, upon which Travelstart’s CEO wished to model the new space. From there, Inhouse Director, Phillip Wyatt and Senior Designer, Chrismari Loubser, were delighted to help make the vision happen. Like any booming business, Travelstart has long since learnt that initial impressions can’t be undervalued. As a result, they requested a reception area with, as it might be called, a “WOW effect”. To answer the brief, Inhouse designed a reception area dominated by a huge, circular blue light box situated behind the reception desk. Modelled after Travelstart’s logo, the light box makes an immediate impression of the brand’s identity the moment one enters the office. To the right is a coffee bar, and behind the light [...]

Following Inhouse Brand Architects‘ successful redesign of John Brown Media’s Cape Town offices, the company’s UK head office then commissioned Inhouse to envisage its newly acquired Shoreditch offices. Inhouse was invited to tender against several UK design firms and was awarded the London project. The Inhouse team included Director of the London project, Lawrence Holmes, Creative Director, Aidan Hart, and Associate Director, Jenine Bruce. They were tasked with designing a stimulating environment that would provide a visual representation of the John Brown Media story. The interior design drives conversation in the workplace through the incorporation of break-away areas into an innovative spatial plan. The result does away with the idea of working in silos; instead it encourages integration among employees through an open-plan interface. Foregoing the company’s traditional corporate colours, teal and yellow, John Brown Media UK opted for a black and white scheme, which became one of the fundamental elements of the interior design. The monochromatic branding and styling unites all four floors of the office. The flooring continues the monochromatic scheme with black vinyl in the break-away areas and carpeting in the open-plan spaces. Pops of colour appear throughout the office in the form of ottomans, poufs and [...]

Inhouse Brand Architects was commissioned by owners Dani and Alan Pick to redesign the interiors of the original Butcher Shop & Grill, situated on Nelson Mandela Square in Sandton, Johannesburg, after the team successfully designed the interiors of the restaurant’s first Cape Town branch. The Sandton refurbishment was carried out by Inhouse’s Gauteng office. Director, Lawrence Holmes, Creative Director, Aidan Hart, and Associate Director, Cara Masureik, led the project. Their solution for Sandton marries the traditional feel of the Sandton branch with the modern aesthetic of the Cape Town outlet. Inhouse was asked to replace the existing interiors with more modern elements mixed with handcrafted pieces and to create a new open-plan environment. The original ‘glass-box’ area of the restaurant was given an overhaul, while the rest of the restaurant will be completed in a phase-by-phase approach in 2016. This allows the restaurant to continue to trade without having to disappoint customers and shut completely during the refurbishment. The newly redesigned area displays elements that reflect The Butcher Shop & Grill brand. The floors, which are laid with timber-patterned porcelain tiles, and the columns, which carry green glazed metro tile cladding, are noticeable design elements. Marbled walls, brass detailing, steel, [...]

Led by Inhouse Brand Architects’ director, Aidan Hart, the re-design of John Brown Media’s premises aims to increase connectivity among staff members while aligning the physical environment with John Brown’s charged work ethic and creative output. The new space incorporates John Brown’s corporate colour, teal, which is uplifted by vibrant yellow, and expands on the company’s informal bird theme motifs that were in place in the previous offices. A stylish yet lighthearted Scandinavian aesthetic runs throughout. Once past the reception area, the offices open into a shared space that includes an open-plan kitchen with a breakaway dining table and seating. Directly opposite the kitchen and table is a series of three eating pods featuring high-back booth seating in the company’s signature teal. Because of its proximity to the kitchen, the booths have successfully enabled staff to socialise and engage with one another while grabbing a bite to eat. Beyond the kitchen and dining area lies a lounge area or indoor ‘campsite’. The ‘campsite’ is kitted out with faux grass, picnic-like seating, timber plant boxes and canary yellow wooden tree-trunks. Brightly hued lounge seating, a cartoon-covered ‘bed’ and birdcage light fixtures add delightful visual fodder. The nod to the outside world [...]
