International architecture firm SAOTA opens LIFE SPACE LIFE in Zurich, Switzerland this month. More than just a showcase of the award-winning firm’s work, the exhibition explores the synthesis of these core ideas within the work that has established SAOTA as an integral part of the global architectural landscape. LIGHT. The energy that is crucial to human life is also the force that renders form, allowing the observer to perceive colour, texture and space. SPACE. The manipulation of space and the definition of the sequence in which it is experienced has always been one of the architect’s primary tools. SAOTA’s architecture blends and shares space, blurring the division between elements; be it internal or external, sometimes extending to the horizon, or to the sky, to create buildings that invite a powerfully emotive response. LIFE. SAOTA creates architecture that understands human needs extend beyond just the requirement for shelter. They are stages for entertaining, for sharing, for rest, for families and for contemplation. LIGHT SPACE LIFE offers a view into the thinking of an architectural practice that is relentlessly questioning the sense of and what it means to live today. About SAOTA SAOTA, a leading firm of architects, is driven by the [...]

“I really enjoyed contrasting simple geometric forms and monochromatic colours with the classic character of the building,” says Michele Rhoda, ARRCC Director and lead designer on this project. This three bedroom apartment is situated on the fourth floor, overlooking the North Bank of the River Seine in the quiet 16th Arrondissement of Paris. The designers were challenged to balance bespoke contemporary style with classic French flair. The Eiffel Tower just across the river informed the design; ARRCC drew on its unique and recognisable aesthic to inspire individual elements whilst its strikingly close presence guided the internal remodel. Existing narrow passageways and high ceilings were challenges that steered the overall design direction and the conceptualisation of creative alternatives. The vision was to accentuate the high ceilings to capture views and draw light into the space. The result is a clean, calm and memorbable modern space, in which the spectacular Parisian setting take centerstage, and clever refinements to existing architecture add charm and character. ENTRANCE Stepping out of the lobby, an open plan area incorporating the kitchen, breakfast area and salon (lounge) spans the full depth of the apartment. Herringbone timber flooring complements panelling that wraps the interior. A door to the [...]

Layered views and blurring edges Open plan living and the ability to live in and through your home has inspired this transparent and easy-living family home. Set between the Indian Creek Canal and Pine Tree Drive in Miami’s historic Collin’s Waterfront district, the SAOTA-designed space is expansive and fluid – opening up to the activity of the canal when desired, or contained when privacy is needed. Set on a strongly linear proportioned site, the building is porous, bringing the landscape and water bodies into the interior of the house to create a greater sense of space. Through the introduction of a number of introverted and extroverted courtyards, the house boasts views to the outside in two directions. These views are visible from almost any point in the house, creating a tangible and immediate relationship to the outdoors. “The design is as much about containment as it is about the views through the many living spaces, towards the Atlantic Ocean and world-renowned Miami Beach,” says SAOTA director, Philip Olmesdahl. “While the overall contemporary architectural design is a key focus of the SAOTA design team, the use and connectivity of the spaces is the primary driver – how the house lives.” The [...]

A youthful yet sophisticated contemporary family dwelling on the Sydney Harbour shore Set in a north-facing cove in Sydney’s vast natural harbour, the site borders a recreational park and a public pier which juts out into the bay. This element forms one axis for the site whilst a pristine beach, directly in front of the site, forms another. From the principle park elevation that the new building appears as a collection of planes; a play on space, privacy and threshold. Graphite grey sail screens (made from “Kaynemaile,” a polycarbonate chainmail developed in New Zealand for the Lord of the Rings movies) are rigged just off the house providing privacy from the road. Timber cladding, plastered mass walls, a wood-clad soffit and the exaggerated cill of a bay window punched through the sail screens, are layered into further planes. This game creates depth in an otherwise linear façade and provides privacy whilst maximising light and views to the park. Set into this façade the stairwell is fully glazed; but wrapped protectively in a cloak of timber louvres. This gently curved outline contrasts with the surrounding crystalline box and mediates between the formal entrance and bedrooms above. Entry is at 90 degrees [...]

Award-winning design studio, Inhouse, has completed the interior of a privately-owned manor house in Franschhoek in the picturesque Cape Winelands. The home was built from scratch in collaboration with Chris de Hart Architects with the aim of capturing the sweep of a spacious plantation-style country estate, with aesthetic touches inspired by the film Casablanca. The house features large custom-made French doors that open outwards onto courtyards and verandas that complement the landscape. Inside, the house is made up of spacious rooms with high ceilings that display ornate moulding and coffer details. These details are key decorative features and a strategic choice by Inhouse intended to soften the vastness of the space. A large collection of antique furniture was included in the design and Inhouse created an interior scheme that would be sympathetic to the finishing. Aidan Hart of Inhouse says of the finished work, “We are happy to have collaborated on this project and to have overcome the design-related challenges along the way. It’s seldom that designers have the opportunity to work on a project of this stature and sheer scale.” The house’s main living room, which comprises of two sitting areas, features key antique pieces set before an austere [...]

This La Lucia beach house perfectly balances luxury and comfort with its uncomplicated spaces. Situated on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast just south of Umhlanga, the house is gently nestled between protected milkwood trees and enjoys beautiful ocean views – both of which inspired the design. Bronze aluminium sliding screens cocoon the house and offers protection from the elements as well as providing a unique the signature look for of the building “The surrounding beauty of the environment inspired so much of the design. As designers we are passionate about creating spaces that reflect both the location and our clients – that is how life-enhancing spaces are crafted.” – Mark Rielly, ARRCC Director. ENTRANCE A sense of arrival is created by two milkwood trees flanking the entrance. A floating timber step platform and pergola lead towards the front door of the home. Upon entering, the panorama is only revealed as one reaches the doublevolume hallway – the aligned timber slat cladded ceilings drawing the eye to the seascape ahead. Ocean views are framed perfectly by the screens that envelope the building. “The owners wanted the project to epitomise the spirit of a contemporary beach house with a sense of sophistication.
Award-winning design studio, Inhouse, recently created the design concept for Harlief Deli’s newly revamped branch in Gardens Shopping Centre in Cape Town. The overhaul was part of Hartlief’s overall reinvigoration of its branding that included refining the colours of its logo and translating the brand identity into the deli’s built environment. Inhouse’s design involved incorporating colours and materials that added warmth to the deli’s interior, as well as creating additional space for a better customer experience. The studio’s design concept focused on the interior’s layout and finishes, taking into account the types of products and services Hartlief provides. Hartlief is a meat manufacturing company that was established in Windhoek, Namibia in the 1940s and has enjoyed success as a producer of premium meat products for over 70 years. In November 2016, it opened two delis in Cape Town, one in the Gardens Shopping Centre and the other at the High Constantia Shopping Centre. In 2017, the brand enlisted Inhouse to create a new design concept for its branch in Gardens to provide a more appealing shopping experience to its customers. Before the redesign, the deli was limited in size and the store’s layout did not allow customers to move in [...]
