Tell us a little about yourself? I am a Durban-based interior designer with a love for travel and diverse cultures. Growing up in Durban, I was fortunate enough to be constantly exposed to different cultures and people. I also have a passion for history and architecture; I feel that there is so much to be learnt from the past when proceeding into the future. What are your plans and aspirations for the future? In the future, I hope to continue to represent South African interior design and inspire people through my work. I particularly enjoy working on hospitality projects and hope to get to a point in my career where I get the opportunity to design interiors and manufacture furniture more frequently within this sector. I also hope to continue designing furniture, create fresh conceptual ideas, and find creative ways for material usage. What impact do you hope to have in the world of design? I hope to show other young women that this industry can drive women’s success and recognition on a local and international level. I also hope to educate people on what our industry is actually about because there is a misconception that interior designers [...]

LEAN The LEAN side table is a simple interlocking construction of three elements. The two vertical and diametrically opposing elements of the timber base slot into one another, each supporting the other; each unable to stand without the other. The circular top, which can be of glass, stone, brass, is a at disc that sits in a recess provided by the timber base. The beauty of the table lies in its simplicity, in the reliance and relationship of one form upon another to create the whole. It is an assembly of simple elements, a visual haiku, the fewest amount of syllables expressing the maximum emotion possible. Available in a range of timbers and with options of glass, stone or timber tops, the LEAN side table is a succinct expression of the relationship between form and material. MAGNIFICO “Nature provides us with expressions of beauty beyond our own creation, this is the essence and function of the Magni co table.” The MAGNIFICO collection of tables focus on the beauty of natural materials and their inherent unique qualities. The material palette is raw, yet sumptuous, the materials express themselves with complete clarity. RATIONAL “I wanted to create the simplest table I could, going through a complex [...]

Designed by OKHA Studio, this contemporary fusion restaurant set along the picturesque coastline of the Atlantic seaboard in Cape Town, draws inspiration from the bold and graphic language of Turkish and Moorish design as well as a taught Eurocentric classicism. These diverse and opposing aesthetics come together to create a balanced and synergetic fusion. The central open plan floor space is allocated to banquette and table seating and includes the implementation of a full height slatted timber screen to demarcate seating areas and provide both privacy and filtered views. The slatted timber screen divides the open plan space and creates intimate seating settings whilst giving a sense of visual connection and transparency to the room. The extreme proportions of the Neolith clad bar and its minimalist design, give the zone a dramatic and somewhat theatrical tone. The Bar display utilizes dark stained, slatted timber sliding panels and LED strip lighting to accentuate the horizontal perspective. Interior architecture forms are kept simple and rigorous to allow the various abstracted surface patterning to take centre stage. Patterning is allocated to clearly demarcated zones, the shift in surface values is crisp and outlined. The monochromatic, graphic geometry of the Moroccan tiles is echoed in the over-sized herringbone parquet flooring. Diagonal slats of [...]

Resting on the boulders of Bantry Bay, Cape Town, this four bedroomed apartment boasts 270° views over the Atlantic Ocean. After purchasing an entire floor within an older ocean front building, the client challenged the ARRCC team to convert four separate one-bedroom apartments into a luxury holiday retreat. The client’s specific brief on how the apartment was going to be used, informed the configuration of the new design. Since the husband and wife would be using the apartment on their own most of the time, it was decided to create the master bedroom as part of the living areas towards the front of the apartment, with the three guest bedrooms towards the back. This also solved the challenge of ensuring that all rooms have a front or side view over the ocean; this part of the brief being particularly challenging due to the narrow shape of the apartment block. Entering through the front door that is concealed within a timber clad wall, one’s eye is automatically drawn to the magnificent ocean views. These are amplified by fully retractable glass doors which also act as apartment walls. A large raw timber dining table dominates the entrance area which also features a [...]

DESIGN Quintessentially Ellerman House, BAR ROC’s tailored interior has a tangible sense of distilled calm and languid luxury; here time is irrelevant, the art is sentience. The precisely articulated material palette is raw, brutal, sumptuous. Exacting design allows each finish to express itself with clarity and integrity, revealing and accentuating the linear, rigorous elegance of the space. BAR ROC emits an evocative lustre truly in keeping with the attitude and resonance of Ellerman House. A relaxed, contemporary space for friends to gather at the end of the day and chat about the incredible adventure they find themselves on.
Haldane Martin was commissioned to design the interior of the new Healey’s Cheesery and Deli in the Western Cape wine region of Somerset West, as a space that offers customers the opportunity to taste cheese and wine together, while experiencing the cheese-making process first-hand. Healey’s Cheesery was envisioned to showcase the award-winning Healey’s Cheddar Cheese – most well-known for its slow-mature Farmhouse Cheddar, amongst the world’s top four cheddars since its launch in 2005. Locating the cheesery on the Waterkloof Wine Estate was the ideal fit as cheese and wine pair so perfectly, and so the vision was for a deli that would combine these in a beautiful natural setting alongside the cheesery. Sitting overlooking the beautiful vista of False Bay, Healey’s Cheese is in a simple, contemporary farmhouse. Inside, the cheese deli looks directly into the cheese-making factory and maturing room through large back windows. Wooden shelves of cheeses are illuminated softly giving the display a glowing, ethereal quality for customers to experience while tasting and shopping for cheese and wine. The design concept centres around large oversized spruce timber used to echo the large cheese wheels in scale and colour. The main deli counter stacks the warm yellow [...]

When this two-storey Cape Town (South Africa) property, originally designed by SAOTA a decade ago, was bought by its new owners, they called for a complete renovation with increased accommodation. This left the team of ARRCC interior designers with a challenge that they met head-on and the end result is a statement of architectural and design excellence. According to Mark Rielly, design architect and Jon Case, lead interior designer on this project, “the rewriting of the existing architectural language while maintaining the architectural signature was a key challenge that we had to address. To meet the client brief of more accommodation, we needed to design a third floor for the residence, adding to its stature and changing the façade substantially.” When approaching the entrance located at the rear of the property, the solid structure gives nothing away of the magnificence that unfolds when you enter the residence. The detail visible in the perforated vertical screens that fold away from the curved barrel of the rear façade, do however hint at the subtle signatures that await inside. The rounded walls of the entrance foyer sets the tone for the organically shaped interiors. Rather than being defined by blocks, the spaces inside [...]

Already nearing its second decade, Travelstart remains one of Africa’s leading online travel agencies and booking websites. Having recently relocated its Cape Town headquarters to a two-and-a-half-storey set of offices in Longkloof Studios, located just off the bustling hub that is Kloof Street; it is natural that the company should wish to set itself up in a working space that would reflect its efficiency and modernity. The initial interior design concept was inspired by the office featured in Nancy Meyers’ 2015 comedy film The Intern, upon which Travelstart’s CEO wished to model the new space. From there, Inhouse Director, Phillip Wyatt and Senior Designer, Chrismari Loubser, were delighted to help make the vision happen. Like any booming business, Travelstart has long since learnt that initial impressions can’t be undervalued. As a result, they requested a reception area with, as it might be called, a “WOW effect”. To answer the brief, Inhouse designed a reception area dominated by a huge, circular blue light box situated behind the reception desk. Modelled after Travelstart’s logo, the light box makes an immediate impression of the brand’s identity the moment one enters the office. To the right is a coffee bar, and behind the light [...]
