In a corner of South Africa’s Eastern Cape, something extraordinary is unfolding. Lalibela Wildlife Reserve, known for its conservation-first approach, is expanding its protected wilderness through a carefully orchestrated series of land acquisitions and rehabilitation projects that will reshape both the landscape and the future of wildlife conservation in the region. The expansion is a strategic vision that will see former agricultural land restored to its natural state, creating what Johann Lombard, CEO of Lalibela Wildlife Reserve, describes as ‘the most rough uncut diamond of a landscape that facilitates some of the highest-quality wildlife experiences’. At the heart of this transformation lies a former commercial peach and prune farm, where systematic rehabilitation is already underway. The process began with the careful removal of the fruit trees, the first step in a complex ecological restoration that could span anywhere from five to seventy-five years. The removed trees are burned, their ashes worked back into the aerated soil, creating a nutrient-rich foundation for indigenous vegetation. ‘We have to be mindful of the chemicals previously used in these orchards,’ says Lombard. ‘By systematically removing and burning the trees, we’re ensuring any residual agricultural chemicals don’t affect our wildlife populations, initiating a complete ecosystem [...]

Workcations are a relatively new and still rising trend at the intersection of wellness, work, and travel. According to an article published by Forbes, working from leisure destinations not only boosts productivity, but improves well-being. It’s a way to break your routine, prioritise travel and create balance. Whether you’re planning a company conference or retreat, extending a family holiday with a week of remote work, or pursuing the lifestyle of a digital nomad, there are plenty of reasons to include a workcation in your annual planning. What better place to work away from home than a magnificent Big Five Game Reserve? Change up your routine, breathe in plenty of fresh air, and enjoy the luxury of having your day-to-day needs taken care of. ‘You may not be able to unplug completely, but when it comes to feeling rested, a little can go a long way. Simply having someone to prepare your meals, clean your space, and look after your laundry can reduce your mental load and allow you to truly relax when you’re not at your desk. The benefits of being close to nature are too many to count,’ [...]

You know Cape Town and its famous flat-topped mountain, Johannesburg’s city hustlers, the wild Kruger Park and the coastal scenes of the Garden Route, but there is one South African destination that often slips below the radar of tourists and locals alike: Gqeberha. Those in the know recognise this part of South Africa as a world-class safari destination, where high-end luxury accommodation and exceptional wildlife experiences await. Located in the Eastern Cape province of South Africa, the coastal city of Gqeberha (until 2021 called Port Elizabeth, also known affectionately as PE) is home to South Africa’s third-largest port. The city with the small towns of Uitenhage and Despatch comprise the metropolitan area of Nelson Mandela Bay. So what makes this gem of the Eastern Cape so special? Beyond Gqeberha itself, which is steeped in history, tradition and culture, the area is a paradise for nature lovers. Its coastline, lapped by the clear and temperate waters of the Indian Ocean, is one of its biggest drawcards. VIsitors can enjoy an array of watersports, including surfing, sailing, windsurfing, kiteboarding and scuba diving, or simply relax on Hobie Beach, Humewood Beach or Kings Beach (all Blue Flag beaches). This coastal area is also [...]

This summer season has been marked by a feeling of excitement and anticipation at Lalibela Game Reserve in the Eastern Cape, where the drought has broken, newborn life is being welcomed and a passionate new CEO has taken the helm. With its six magnificent lodges, unique 10 500-hectare multi-biome landscape, Big 5, vast herds of plains game, multitudes of smaller creatures and vibrant birdlife, Lalibela always treats its guests to an adventure like no other. But, while blessed with sufficient natural grasslands to allow wildlife to continue to thrive, this region of the Eastern Cape has nonetheless recently weathered a tumultuous seven-year drought which left dams, rivers and waterfalls diminished, restricting flow and forcing many reserves in the area to supplement their water supply. Then, in September, steady rain finally arrived, filling dams and causing rivers to flow and waterfalls to gush for the first time in many years. The water table rose to pre-drought levels, and vegetation grew to be a lush haven for the animals. Excitingly, this welcome boom of abundant greenery coincided with the arrival of ‘baby season’ on the reserve. Traditionally, mid to late November and early December are calving [...]
