On the eve of the lockdown, staff at Spier, the historic Stellenbosch wine farm, prepared boxes of food for 450 vulnerable families in surrounding communities. Just over a week later, these families again received a food box full of nutritious ingredients. The aim of these boxes are to ensure there is nourishment for those who might struggle to access food during their time at home. While these donations will help to keep hunger at bay in the short-term, Spier has recognised that a longer-term solution to address food security in the Stellenbosch area is necessary. In partnership with the Sustainability Institute, 13 members of the local community (predominantly from the Lynedoch area) were recruited to speed up food production at Spier and to learn how to grow their own fresh, nutritious produce at home. “If people learn how to grow their own food, they will never go hungry again,” says Megan McCarthy, who oversees the Spier Food Garden. Over the next three months, she will be providing hands-on training in demonstration plots at Spier. An expert in using eco-friendly techniques to grow food, she is being ably assisted by Lonwabo Mfenguza. Lonwabo is sharing the skills he has gained as [...]

Lalela, a non-profit arts education programme for at-risk youth in Sub-Saharan Africa, knows the power of creativity to uplift, inspire, encourage, motivate and ignite innovation. In the 10 years since launching its life-changing art programmes, Lalela has seen this play out in classrooms and workshops across South Africa, Zimbabwe and Uganda. Lockdown in South Africa has been no different in terms of allowing learners a much-needed creative outlet to help them process and understand the world around them. Following the enforcement of a national lockdown as an urgent measure to stem the spread of the Coronavirus in South Africa, we’ve watched with wonder as children of all ages harnessed their creativity in ways we never imagined. During the lockdown, schools were required to close their doors and all learners were sent home just as Lalela’s art facilitators were making their final preparations for the much-anticipated March holiday programme. Lalela’s holiday programmes – usually held in the March, June and December school holidays within the communities they serve – provide necessary structure along with fun and absorbing creative activities for children during the long days away from their classrooms, when supervision at home might be lacking while parents and guardians are at [...]

On Monday, 23 March 2020, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa announced that the Government would enforce a 21-day nationwide lockdown from midnight on Thursday, 26 March 2020 until Thursday,16 April 2020 in a bid to slow the spread of the Coronavirus and avoid a human catastrophe. While essential food and emergency services will remain in operation at this time, lack of public transport and the impact on the local economy due to business closures will make it more difficult for the vulnerable members of our community to access food items at this time. This situation is exacerbated by the nationwide panic-buying that has ensued ahead of the lockdown, despite the President’s requests to refrain from such purchasing behavior. Spier Wine Farm in Stellenbosch, Cape Town is taking measures to offer relief to the vulnerable in addition to its existing Growing for Good initiatives. Expressing a sense of solidarity and sensitivity to its context and community are important drivers for Spier, one of the country’s oldest wine farms. Says Spier CEO Andrew Milne: “We recognise that there are many vulnerable families in our immediate community who will struggle to access food items.” In order to address this, Spier partnered with the [...]

Following a two week public exhibition and a strict voting process, The Better Living Challenge – a design competition showcasing green and affordable solutions to improve the homes of people living in low-income communities – has announced its winners. The winning solutions and the designers behind them were celebrated at the inaugural Better Living Challenge Awards Ceremony, held on 25 November 2014 at the Cape Town City Hall. Alan Winde, Western Cape Minister of Economic Opportunities, was the guest speaker at the event: “It was a great pleasure to announce the winners of the Better Living Challenge. These awards have been a collaborative effort between Western Cape Government’s 110% Green initiative and the Department of Economic Development and Tourism. The awards play a pivotal role when it comes to the acknowledgement of those who have committed their careers to push for sustainable development and economic growth in our province.” Three overall winners were chosen from 21 Finalists, previously selected out of 130 original competition entries received across three entry categories. These 21 solutions were showcased in October and November at the V&A Waterfront and Cape Town Station Forecourt, where the finalists of the competition were judged. One overall winner was [...]

The Better Living Challenge Showcase is an interactive event taking place from Tuesday, 28 October to Saturday, 8 November 2014. The exhibition will be officially opened by Premier Helen Zille, MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela (Human Settlements) and MEC Alan Winde (Economic Opportunities) on Thursday, 30 October 2014. There will be lunchtime talks taking place from Wednesday, 29 October 2014. Exhibition opening times are as follows: Monday to Friday from 09H00 – 17H00 and 09H00 – 13H00 on Saturdays. On show at this event is a display of solutions by the finalists and exhibitors whose projects were entered into the Better Living Challenge. These innovative, affordable and green solutions aim to address some of the problems faced by people living in low-income communities. Better Living Challenge finalist, James van der Walt’s SolarTurtle solution, will power the entire exhibition off-the-grid at the Cape Town station forecourt. SolarTurtle is a solar-powered energy distribution point securely housed in a 6m shipping container. The container is fitted with a solar battery charging station capable of charging hundreds of battery packs every day. In low-income communities, SolarTurtle functions like a local spaza shop where a local resident will own and operate the SolarTurtle and neighbours will bring [...]
