Careers have been launched. Dreams have been realised. Since 2016 the biannual Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search has surfaced the hottest emerging designers in the country – talented creatives who’ve benefited from this coveted business-accelerator opportunity that takes talent out of the shadows and mentors it into the spotlight. Applications are now open for the sixth edition of Nando’s HYD and young designers from across South Africa are invited to show what they’re made of, with entrants invited to rise to the challenge of designing a striking linear light. At its simplest, ‘linear lighting’ is a source of illumination where all related fixtures are arranged in a straight row, providing directional lighting. Linear lights are often hung above a long table or counter. For Nando’s HYD, the aim is to design a linear light that would shine in any Nando’s restaurant anywhere in the world. Sculptural and crafted elements could introduce texture and colour, while combinations of materials create unique and interesting pieces that contribute to the overall design of the restaurant interior. Handmade details created in collaboration with crafters could be important aspects of the concept. Installation and longevity are vital, and an understanding of how the [...]

Siviwe Jali, a finalist of Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) Talent Search 2020, was recently awarded the Best New Talent prize at Decorex Cape Town 2022 for being the most prominent new voice in the design world. Jali’s work formed part of an exhibition of past and current designs by the various finalists and winners of HYD since its inception in 2016. Siviwe Jali Clout/SA’s director, Tracy Lynch, curated the bold, eclectic retrospective exhibition at 100% Design Africa, which was co-located within Decorex Africa Reimagined at the CTICC in Cape Town. Many of these pieces, including Jali’s three, were brought to life through collaborations between emerging designers and established designers and makers initiated by Clout/SA. Jali’s pieces include Nokhanya Lights, Ntsimbi server and Cupisa bench. The lights are a collaboration with Ashanti Design, the server was brought to life with the assistance of TanDesignSA and the bench is made by Pedersen + Lennard. Jali founded the Durban-based industrial and product design consultancy uMugqa Studio in 2018. With a clear line (uMugqa means line in isiZulu) drawn between identifying a problem and solving it, uMugqa Studio aims to put functional, social design on a pedestal. Lights and bench by Nando’s HYD [...]

Beyond being the country’s leading furniture and lighting design competition, the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) talent search competition has evolved into a highly effective platform for helping young designers transition their work from conceptual design thinking to actual marketable products that can be manufactured and sold at scale. From 6pm to 7pm on Tuesday the 28th of September, Clout/SA, which facilitates the HYD competition, will host a webinar using HYD as a case study on the practical evolution of design products from concept to actual. Clout/SA creative director, Tracy Lynch, and editor, Malibongwe Tyilo, will be in conversation with HYD 2020 winner, Katlego Tshuma, HYD 2020 top ten finalist, Anele Vezi, and Dokter and Misses co-founder, Adriaan Hugo. Tshuma recently collaborated with Hugo to bring his winning Sangu Bench concept to life, while Vezi collaborated with Mpho Vackier, the founder of award -winning studio, Theurbanative to bring his Mbokodo bench concept to life. Titled Process of Design Collaboration, the conversation will focus on how each of their processes unfolded, from concept to manufacture. The designers will share insider info that relates to collaboration and the making of commercially sustainable furniture pieces. “There’s a difference between rendering a design and [...]

We spoke with up-and-coming designer Katlego Tshuma, whose Sangu bench design garnered the overall prize in the Nando’s Hot Young Designer (HYD) Talent Search 2020, a competition that aims to unearth new talent. With the much-awaited competition results announced in November 2020, Here’s what this rising star had to say about his process, what design means to him, and his plans for the future… How old are you now? “As old as I look and as young as I feel!” (Tshuma is 29 years old) Please give us a brief description of your background? “I am a self-taught, multidisciplinary conceptual artist with an emphasis on design as a vehicle for driving ideas, solutions, conversation and messaging in public and private spaces. I started my creative career in 2013 after quitting my job at the airport and taking up photography. Six months later, I published my first body of work, titled: Seeds, A Township Monologue. While working on Seeds, I launched and ran Shots011.com between 2015 and 2018. This was a photography website geared towards helping emerging artists navigate the South African art industry, which I closed down after moving into the advertising space. In advertising, I worked on The Market [...]
