During extensive research, Herman Miller’s research team identified that we fundamentally have 6 needs that need to be met for their health and well-being… I have regularly talked about these in relation to designing and managing workplaces. However – these fundamental needs still apply with many people now working from home. What are you doing to make sure these needs are being met? Achievement We strive for excellence and take pride in our accomplishments – Achievement is strongly linked to a desire to not only take responsibility for our own work, but also to receive recognition for reaching the necessary standards. Motivation to achieve is at its greatest when the goals are attainable. A sense of achievement correlates with self-esteem, productivity and performance. Autonomy We seek freedom in our actions and decisions – Autonomy or independence within our sphere of work is connected to job satisfaction and commitment to the organisation. More recently autonomy is the freedom to decide which tasks we will tackle, in which order and in which way, rather than simply on content. So, it might mean taking the time out to think about a project or having the space to discuss an idea with colleagues. However, autonomy must be balanced [...]

The Herman Miller Aeron Chair is the perfect accompaniment to a home office. Why focusing on physical, mental, and emotional health is a must Written by Rebecca Greier Horton, Workplace Well-Being Knowledge Lead at Herman Miller Self-care has been a hot topic in 2020. And now, given the fact that many of us are working from home, it’s even more important. How do we look after our mental, emotional, and physical health while trying to manage the challenges of working remotely? When it comes to WFH, comfort is key. Take time to set up an ergonomic home office. This will help prevent the musculoskeletal disorders that can occur when you work on a laptop for long periods of time, and it will increase your cognitive engagement. So, where to start? Light It Up Select a spot where natural light is your primary light source. Research indicates our sleep cycles and even our hormones are positively affected by this. If your setup is near a window where you can let the fresh air circulate—even better! Police Your Posture Remember that bad posture still counts when you work from home, and that how you sit today will shape your body forever. It’s [...]

I recently sought treatment from a biokineticist after having the unfortunate experience of dislocating my hip and he suggested I invest in a better chair to alleviate some of the discomfort I was feeling during my work day. I decided to give Herman Miller’s iconic Aeron chair a test run for a few weeks to see if it made any difference. Within two hours of placing my order, there was a buzz at the front door and I was presented with a chair. Just a few hours later, a Herman Miller sales representative arrived and asked me about my personal needs and preferences, and assisted me in adjusting the chair to fit my body – talk about personalised service! My regular desk chair is fairly traditional in design and has a mesh back and hard padded seat. The carbon classic weave seat and back of the Aeron took some getting used to at first but I quickly became accustomed to the way it conformed to the shape of my body. I especially appreciated the setting that allows the chair to move as you do, which made standing up effortless and pain-free. Having used the Aeron for a few weeks, I’m [...]

Global design manufacturer Herman Miller, Inc. has partnered with London-based design company forpeople to create the Keyn Chair Group, a range of meeting and side chairs that offer responsive movement and immediate comfort for collaborative spaces. The Keyn Chair Group builds upon Herman Miller’s depth of knowledge in workplace environments and brings the company’s specific expertise in performance seating to a new category. Stephen Perkins, Herman Miller’s Vice President, International Research, Design and Development explains: “From our research, we know that people move around on average of 53 times an hour when seated. Chairs in meeting rooms tend to be inflexible, meaning a user’s natural movement isn’t encouraged or supported. This results in people being less engaged in the meeting as they become more uncomfortable. The Keyn Chair Group is designed to respond to a user’s movement, supporting their body as they move in their seat.” Keyn provides instant-seated comfort through its sculpted one-piece shell design. Included in the design of the chair is Herman Miller’s unique CradleFlex system, which responds to shifts in posture. The back reclines smoothly up to 10 degrees, while simultaneously moving the seat forward. The Keyn Chair Group was designed by London-based design company forpeople, [...]

South Africa’s leading designer and manufacturer of office furniture, Ergoform, has branched out from its home base of Cape Town to open a brand new showroom in the décor hub of Kramerville, Johannesburg. Situated in close proximity to other interior design stores and top fabric houses, the new Ergoform showroom is perfectly positioned to cater to interior design, décor and architectural design professionals as well as members of the public. Already, the space has been lauded as a world-class design destination. When owners Leon and Alice Roodt conceived of the space they envisaged a very contemporary outlet that would have more of an art gallery feel than a regular showroom. The open plan configuration and high gloss white floors contribute to this effect – as does the up-to-the-minute selection of Ergoform’s latest designer pieces. Ergoform specializes in modern office furniture that keeps abreast of international trends, but doesn’t carry the heavy cost of imported pieces. Many of Ergoform’s pieces translate comfortably into the home office and home environment too… All Ergoform’s pieces are designed by Leon and manufactured here in South Africa and the company has received several awards for manufacturing and productivity over its 20-year existence. After long-term [...]
