The announcement of COVID-19 Alert Level One in South Africa in October 2021 saw local businesses breathe a little easier as doors opened wider to broader economic opportunities. To support local businesses across the board, from one-person SMMEs to corporates, a number of key public, private and NPO stakeholders are joining forces to initiate a “Made in Cape Town” movement that will surface and celebrate products and services of a Cape Town origin. From left to right: Celebrating all things “Made in Cape Town” are Marco Morgan (Programme Specialist – Social Impact, V&A Waterfront), RRLL participant Luvuyo Mpoza, Erica Elk (Group CEO of the CDI), Heath Nash (founder of “Our Workshop”) and fellow RRLL participant Mpilo Headman, with various items produced on site at the Langa-based centre. The “Made in Cape Town” movement is managed by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI) in partnership with the City of Cape Town’s Enterprise and Investment Department. It aims to demonstrate the strength of what can be achieved when public and private entities come together to support the reopening of the economy. “The primary goal at this stage,” says Erica Elk, Group CEO of the CDI, “is to unearth and showcase what Cape Town [...]

If you think you’ve come up with an idea for a purpose-led solution to our country’s many social and economic issues, now’s your chance to enter the RE:SOLVE Challenge. You could be chosen to form part of a six-month design thinking programme and win your share of R100 000 in grant funding to develop your concept further. But hurry, entries close on 31 October 2021. RE:SOLVE is funded by the City of Cape Town, and organised by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI), a non-profit company with 20 years of success in developing creative people, small businesses and the craft and design sector in South Africa. RE:SOLVE’s aim is to inspire the entrepreneurial spirit of individuals and teams to co-create bold solutions, with a focus on access to economic opportunities, quality healthcare, food security, and water and sanitation. “The RE:SOLVE Challenge is a fantastic opportunity to join in a facilitated process that will help South African innovators take their ideas from concept to more of a reality,” says Erica Elk, Group CEO of the CDI. “We are looking particularly for solutions that can improve the lives of the most vulnerable in our society. It’s a challenge not just for designers, but [...]

While Covid has brought with it a myriad of challenges; there has been a more fortunate side effect: it has revealed our ability to do things differently, especially if we operate collaboratively. This insight is not exclusive to healthcare. It just happens to be particularly pertinent considering the pandemic’s significant impact on this sector, and because personal health and healthcare delivery have occupied a near unprecedented level of scrutiny. There are many lessons for South Africa to learn from the last two years. Lessons that can be used to improve the local healthcare system – these were brought to the forefront at the recent #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2021, hosted by the Craft and Design Institute in partnership with the Mission Network of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in SA. Many of these learnings were surfaced thanks to the uncharted territory that responses to the pandemic needed to navigate. For example, technology was leveraged appropriately to put people and patients at the centre of the solution. We also saw how care was taken closer to patients through multiple models of telehealth which enabled both patients and practitioners to be protected, and connected the need with demand. Mobile phones were used extensively for [...]

Imagine an urban aquaponics farm that feeds local communities? Or an App that allows you to share information about poor road conditions? Or even, an electrical grid storage battery… These concepts are not so far off from being realised, thanks to the RE:SOLVE Challenge. South Africa is full of untapped ideas that hold the potential to solve for the pressing challenges experienced by the people who live here. This – combined with the impact of COVID-19 on the country, which revealed a deep necessity to re-examine and re-imagine how we do things – is what sparked the RE:SOLVE Challenge. This purpose-led, design thinking challenge, which calls on the entrepreneurial and creative spirit of South Africans to rebuild and pave the way forward, was launched in October 2020. RE:SOLVE is now in its 2nd iteration, with the new 2021 Call for Entry open until 31 October 2021. Funded by the City of Cape Town, and organised by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI), RE:SOLVE invites individuals and teams to co-create bold and innovative solutions with a focus on areas such as transport, hygiene, food security, education, medical care, retail and micro-enterprises. The top big ideas that are identified through the challenge [...]

Did you know that 60% food relief during lockdown came from civil society? Far outweighing any government interventions, it points to the power of the people to help solve the food security challenges in our country. This revealing insight surfaced during the recent #cocreateDESIGN FESTIVAL 2021, which was organised by Craft and Design Institute (CDI) in collaboration with the Mission Network of the Kingdom of the Netherlands in South Africa. The Festival also saw the launch of the RE:SOLVE Challenge, an eight-month support programme for entrepreneurs with a share of R100 000 grant funding available for selected local innovations. The Challenge is now open for entries and aims to help entrepreneurs develop new, or refine existing, products and services to solve some of SA’s pressing challenges, including food security. World Food Day on 16 October, which is themed “Our actions are our future – Better production, better nutrition, a better environment and a better life”, is an opportunity to place our food system into sharp focus and highlight the need for home-grown innovations to address systemic challenges. It is a system that is broken for millions of South Africans who struggle to access, on a daily basis, affordable, nutritious, and [...]

With South Africa facing numerous social and economic issues, many exacerbated by COVID-19, there is a real need for new ideas and innovative solutions to be fast-tracked. Enter the RE:SOLVE Challenge, an initiative that is designed to help South Africa’s innovative entrepreneurs to take their next steps. Now in its second iteration, RE:SOLVE has issued a Call for Entries for its next round of support and funding. Once the Call for Entries closes, 80 ideas presented by individuals or teams, will be shortlisted to participate in an eight-month programme. Following this, the most viable solutions will get the opportunity to prototype their ideas thanks to a share of a total of R100 000 in grant funding on offer. RE:SOLVE is funded by the City of Cape Town and managed by the Craft and Design Institute (CDI), a non-profit company with 20 years of success in developing creative people, small businesses and the craft and design sector in South Africa.
