At the opening ceremony of Spier Light Art on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December 2019, the audience will be invited to join a procession across a multi-sensory, cross-cultural wonderland featuring dancers, stilt walkers and other illuminating enchantments. These performances celebrate the launch of the second edition of Spier Light Art – an array of 21 interspersed light and sound installations created by some of South Africa’s leading artists and designers. Choreographer Jay Pather’s performance piece, From Before, will feature 22 Shembe, classical ballet and Bharatha Natyam dancers – all wearing light-infused costumes. Other performances include a new production by the spectacularly athletic Indoni Dance Company and a production with large puppets by Janni Younge. Opening ceremony tickets: R200 per adult (includes a complimentary glass of wine) R75 per child under 12. R650 per couple (includes two adult entry tickets, a picnic and bottle of Signature Spier wine). Starting time: Performance starts at 18:00 Tickets are sold through www.webtickets.co.za From 8 December 2019 to 19 January 2020, Spier Light Art will be freely accessible to the public. Visitors will be able to explore the 21 light art installations which go on at dusk, at their own leisurely pace.

Hot off the press! Clout / A heartfelt celebration of South African design is a gorgeously curated design compendium sharing the collaboration between Nando’s design programme, Clout, and established and emerging creatives. South African design is thriving as never before – in part due to the support of Nando’s notable design programme, Clout, which showcases a host of creatives on its various platforms. The global restaurant giant is one of the biggest exporters of local design – its support for the industry extends to its Hot Young Designer competition, the print magazine Clout, and the online catalogue and purchasing platform Portal to Africa, which has facilitated more than R34m worth of design sales to date. In July last year, it spearheaded Nando’s Business Development Support Initiative to support design businesses. “As a business in South Africa, we are mindful of the need to create employment opportunities for young people as well as offer ongoing hands-on support to SMEs,” says Michael Spinks, Nando’s property and development director. “We are proud to boost the design sector by facilitating exposure to global opportunities.” To enhance its print oeuvre, Clout has brought out a gorgeously curated design compendium of the work and big [...]

South African architect and artist Lorenzo Nassimbeni’s oeuvre is known for its fusion and consolidation of elegant architecture and fine art, bringing the two disciplines together. One of his recent projects, a sculptural bas-relief moulded out of concrete and titled Landmark, encapsulates this unity. Landmark was completed in June 2018 for ABLAND Property Developers at a site called Loftus Park in Pretoria – now known as the City of Tshwane. The project was curated by Parts & Labour and fabricated by Wolkberg Casting Studio. The site-specific artwork was created for the entrance of a hotel, which was designed by Studio 3 Architects (http://studio3designhouse.co.za). The sculpture represents prominent urban elements in Tshwane – particularly those immediately around Loftus Park – that are of historical significance. The suburb of Clydesdale, various distinguished schools in the area, and the Loftus Versfeld stadium are specifically represented in the artwork. Moreover, from an architectural point of view, the style of the sculpture directly references the Brutalism of Loftus Versfeld and pays homage to the Brutalist era of architecture in South Africa. Tshwane is unequivocally the muse for Nassimbeni’s piece. Sculpted from high-performance concrete, the piece is comprised of blocks and tiles that vary in form, [...]
