South African artists Karen Stewart and Ed Suter were among the 38 selected artists chosen from 350 applications received for the second iteration of the Lagos Biennial entitled: “How to Build a Lagoon with Just a Bottle of Wine?” The Lagos Biennial 2 was touted by the New York Times as one of two international Biennials worth travelling for. The title was adapted from the poem, “A Song For Lagos” by the Nigerian writer Akeem Lasisi. The curators framed the title as a provocation for artists and the public to meditate on the history and present construction of a city’s built environment. According to the curators, the title conjures the impossible, and speaks to the city’s “can-do” spirit in the face of seemingly insurmountable social, political, and economic obstacles. The curatorial panel consists of Antawan I. Byrd, Tosin Oshinowo and Oyinda Fakeye whom come from diverse art backgrounds and have made significant contributions to the popularity and rise of contemporary African art internationally. The forthcoming biennial will take the city of Lagos as its epicenter and point of departure for a broader investigation on how contemporary artists, designers, and other creatives are responding to the challenges and possibilities of environments [...]

BOS is a proudly South African ice tea company known for its striking branding, brightly coloured packaging and iconic Afro identity. “Not just an ice tea”, BOS likes to engage, have fun, give joyful experiences and share a sense of life and living. After working together on the BOS Expo stand in 2012, BOS commissioned Haldane Martin to design the interior for its new office extension. The BOS offices are located in Fairweather House in the centre of Woodstock’s creative business hub, an old industrial building converted into office space that houses art galleries, a publisher and small local businesses. BOS wanted to create a bright, colourful and casual work environment that would add a splash of colour and flavour to the office block. BOS’s office extension includes a new reception area, an ice tea bar, a hot desk for sales and marketing, and meeting spaces. Throughout the space, design elements speak to the primary colour scheme of the BOS brand, while the repetition of circular elements reinforce the shape of the company logo. The reception incorporates the BOS Expo stand designed by Haldane Martin, which includes a prime place for the the award-winning BOS Vending Robot that urges consumers to “tweet for tea”.
What do un-established artists and designers need more than anything to help launch their careers? Financial support? Tick! Exposure? Tick! Recognition? Mentorship? Guidance? Tick! Tick! Tick! The PPC Imaginarium – an exciting competition that seeks to rocket boost emerging artists and designers – is ticking all the boxes… The initiative is noteworthy for offering the country’s richest cash prize ever for an arts competition boasting over R500 000 in prize money. But it is even more remarkable for its ambition of providing a nurturing launch platform for its winners – with the aim of establishing them as leaders in their field. The inaugural PPC Imaginarium Awards cement the parent company PPC Ltd’s position as one of the largest and most exciting promoters and patrons of the arts and design in South Africa, a company that has previously been awarded for its innovation and support of the arts. ‘Through the PPC Imaginarium Awards we aim to maximise opportunities for young emerging artists and creative in the arts and design disciplines in South Africa,’ states PPC Architect Daniel van der Merwe. Expanding from its longstanding PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards established in 1992, the PPC Imaginarium Awards provide a platform for designers and [...]

South Africa’s most creative young design project has just been revealed: the overall winner of the inaugural PPC Imaginarium Awards was announced on 05 March 2015 in Cape Town. The competition announcement took place at the Youngblood Foundation Gallery on Bree St, and the event formed part of the popular First Thursdays initiative. In its inaugural year, the PPC Imaginarium has sought to establish and unearth unknown creatives across six disciplines (film, industrial design, fashion, jewellery, architecture and sculpture). The competition received a staggering 477 entries from South Africa’s best and brightest designers and artists, who all used concrete as a medium of expression. Winners in six categories were carefully selected and their work showcased at the UJ Gallery in Johannesburg. Thereafter the exhibition, which was curated by Stephen Hobbs, travelled to the Design Indaba Expo in Cape Town where it was put on display for the duration of the event from 27 February 01 March, before opening at Youngblood until 28 March 2015. The overall winning design – a concrete speaker – comes from the industrial design category. Designers Martin Bolton and Craig Tyndall used acrylic and leather to transform concrete from “being an everyday construction material into a [...]

When The Butcher Shop & Grill, Johannesburg, wanted to bring their long-awaited Cape Town restaurant to life, they looked no further than leading South African interior design firm Inhouse Brand Architects. Tasked with creating a modern restaurant interior that acknowledges The Butcher Shop & Grill’s reputation for excellence and its heritage, Inhouse has successfully realised this steakhouse’s distinctive and rare quality through its own brand of conceptual design. In so doing, the interior design agency has created a new landmark eatery for the Mother City. By employing exclusive materials and hand-made furnishings – redolent of classic New York and Chicago steakhouses – Inhouse has created a contemporary allusion to a tradition of skilled butchery. Set in a relaxed dining environment, The Butcher Shop & Grill prides itself on continuing the superior quality of a bygone era with its hand-carved meats and signature curing and aging processes, accompanied by a prized winelist. Inhouse’s object was to tap into the core of the steakhouse’s unique culture and weave this narrative into its new Mouille Point locale. Upon entering, the space unfolds with stippled and stained glass paneling, delicately wrought ironmongery and descriptive wallpaper depicting antique photographs of the lively bustle of a [...]
