This exhibition will showcase the Stellenbosch University Botanical Garden’s incredible impact on conservation, education and academic support while giving visitors the opportunity to relax, unwind, learn and explore. SUBG contributes to meaningful biodiversity conservation by sampling and managing ex situ collections of species and populations at risk of extinction according to global best practice criteria. Through the medium of Botanical Art and photography we focus on many Critically Endagered species in this year’s offering. Quite a few artists have spent time in the garden learning more about the ex situ conservation collections and documenting some of the plants in stunning renditions of the subjects. Martine Robinson Haemanthus canaliculatus. Says the specialist Botanical Art curator Karen Stewart: “Our artists are so passionate and knowledgeable about plants and bring out something individual about each plant painted. Their observational skills focus our attention on the wonderful world of plants, and the plight many find themselves in with habitat destruction. This year we are excited to introduce photography tpo the exhibition”. “Our world-class Oxalis living collection and many other projects are only possible because of the collaboration between SUBG and Stellenbosch University academic colleagues”, says Garden Curator Don Kirkwood.
Have you ever wondered what happens in the twilight hours on a mid-summer evening at a Stellenbosch wine farm? Quite simply, it’s a magical celebration of nature and the imagination. A Summer Night’s Dream is an enchanting family-friendly show, staged outdoors in a magnificent natural amphitheatre on the farm. As night falls, a troupe of weird and wonderful characters gathers to create a world of fantasy, bringing the landscape alive with colour and sound. The hour-long performance features a cast of dancers, musicians, singers, and actors. The event starts on the Werf with a feast. Ticket options include Spier’s delicious food options, from a braai burger to a picnic spread. As the light of the day moves slowly into darkness, join the procession and make your way to the arena and settle down on the lush green lawn. Celebrate the festive season this year by doing something different with your whole family. Art, like food and wine, is best shared, which is why Spier is such an enthusiastic supporter of African artists and their creations. Housing one of the largest contemporary collections in the country, we believe art has the power to teach and inspire, encouraging us all to engage [...]

Right at the very heart of Spier Wine Farm is the Manor House: A grand dame with a gable dating back to 1822. Over the last few months, she’s been beautifully restored to host small, intimate food and wine experiences. As you feast on the finest food and wine, sit among some of South Africa’s most renowned contemporary art pieces from the Spier collection, and marvel at the exquisite juxtaposition of old and new. Chef Phil Carmichael presents the first series of dinners, every Friday night in March. Presiding over an open hearth kitchen, he will be serving up five course feasts artfully paired with Spier’s flagship wines – representing the very pinnacle of the artistry and craft of Spier’s winemaking. Carmichael served as executive chef of the EDITION Hotel London from 2013 to 2021, and has extensive experience working in Michelin-starred kitchens. As executive chef of MAZE Prague, he garnered a Michelin star within the first year of the restaurant’s opening. Now permanently resident in the country, it was an unbridled love affair with South Africa and a South African, to whom he is married, that led chef Phil to settle on our shores. As for The Manor House, [...]

The epitome of meticulous winemaking, The Black Lion is one of the most luxurious 100% Shiraz ever produced in South Africa. Exquisitely handcrafted by De Toren Private Cellar in Stellenbosch, Cape Town, this bespoke Shiraz is born out of De Toren’s continuous quest for the exceptional. The estate presents The Black Lion as an heirloom piece that bears testament to profound skill, passion and dedication. A mere 1 162 bottles of the 2020 vintage have now been released. This is the 9th vintage release of this extremely limited-edition wine. For the 2020 vintage, the Shiraz grapes, though slightly smaller in size, were more powerful than previous vintages. Full-bodied and with great depth, the result is a robust and vibrant vintage with unequivocally expressive flavours. The Black Lion 2020 vintage is exceptionally multi-layered, with complex aromas of blackberry, spicy pepper notes and a hint of toasty cigar. On the palate, it has a firm yet elegant tannin structure showcasing concentrated purple, black fruit and wood-delivered sweet spices, which lures one into a long, intense finish. Speaking of this luscious wine, De Toren Cellar Master, Charles Williams states: “There is nothing else like this magnificent 100% Shiraz. It has even more richness, [...]

The gloriously black-maned, super-sized Cape Lion was first discovered at the Cape of Good Hope in 1842. Recognised as a distinct subspecies and closely related to the lions of southern and east Asia, the Cape Lion is thought to have evolved its remarkable ebony mane and increased stature due to its geographical isolation. It was larger as a species than other lions, with black tipped ears and an abundant, sooty mane that stretched to its underbelly. It was a formidable creature. A potent emblem of the stormy, wild Cape and the majestic mountains of its escarpment, the Cape Lion endures in our imagination and history as a powerful symbol of strength. The official coat of arms of the Cape Colony has a lion at its centre. Similarly, The Black Lion is an extraordinary collectors’ wine produced by award-winning organic estate De Toren, which is situated on the Polkadraai Hills in Stellenbosch, the very landscape where the Panthera leo melanochaita would once have roamed. Hailed as one of the most luxurious 100% Shiraz ever produced in South Africa, De Toren’s The Black Lion is a large, bold and powerful wine, a masterful alchemy of hand-chosen fruit. The Black Lion is South Africa’s highest [...]

This summer, a new garden with fun outdoor workshops for kids launches at the historic Stellenbosch wine farm Spier, the historic Stellenbosch wine farm, has launched its new Elemental Play Garden: a safe and beautiful outside space where families can explore, dream and play. Adjoining the farm’s historic Werf (farmyard), the Elemental Play Garden is just a stone’s throw from Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery and Spier Farm Café. Conceptualised by landscape architects Ed Brooks and Danielle Croly, focusing on indigenous plants and using local artisans and materials, the garden is divided into quadrants representing the four elements: water, air, fire and earth. Intersecting all four is a spiralling waterway that symbolises the Fibonacci Sequence – a set of numbers where each number is the sum of the two preceding ones. Many patterns in nature follow this rule — such as the spiral shape of a seashell, the arrangement of leaves on a branch, or the petals of some flowers (such as daisies and sunflowers). Features of the garden include a slide landscaped into earth mounds, a tunnel to crawl through, a Charl Conradie wind sculpture and a swing bridge. The water in the Water quadrant has been treated and is [...]

South Africa’s favourites — Sauvignon Blanc, rosé and Merlot — are now available from Spier in 250ml cans, each crafted by acclaimed Cellar Master Frans Smit and his team. “These cans are where convenience and quality converge,” says Smit. “They’re terrific for on-the-go adventures and make for fantastic everyday fridge-fillers too.” Indeed, wines in a can offer plenty of perks. Not only are they quick to chill — but they’re also light and save space: much easier, in other words, to stack, pack and carry than bottles (there’s also no risk of broken glass!). This makes them ideal for picnics, events or after a long hike. And there’s no reason for the connoisseurs to worry: these cans retain all the aromas and flavours that Spier’s bottled wines are renowned for. It’s not just great tasting convenience that cans offer: they’ve got strong green credentials too. “From recycling 100% of our wastewater and more than 98% of solid waste to becoming the first winery in the world to receive Control Union Vegan Standard certification, Spier has long championed sustainability,” explains Smit. “We’re constantly finding ways to tread more lightly on the earth, and our new range of cans forms part of [...]

Sixty percent of the permanent vineyard and cellar team at De Toren Private Cellar is female. What’s more, the harvesters and vineyard tenders are female only. It’s an unusual statistical skew for the wine industry, but not an unusual approach for De Toren – the luxury estate boldly embraces innovation and extreme care in the name of producing rare and exceptional wines that are consistently among the world’s most awarded. An exception to the rule on several fronts, the Stellenbosch estate lays claim to many industry firsts. It was one of the first to plant and produce Bordeaux-style blends in South Africa; the first to introduce a gravity-fed cellar; and the first to achieve over 90 points from wine critics for a maiden vintage. Consider also, that De Toren’s vineyard rows are aligned to face the prevailing winds off False Bay and not at right angles to the wind as farmers are taught. By doing this, cooler air is channelled through the vineyard, lowering the temperature, extending the ripening period and keeping the vines free of disease. Like its wines, De Toren’s practices are clearly beyond the norm. The rationale behind female-only harvesters and vineyard tenders is primarily a practical [...]
