With staycations versus overseas trips on the radar this December, consider holidaying at the Overberg’s star destination, Hermanus. Famed for its “champagne air” and sea views galore, Hermanus is the toast of the coastline. And if you’re looking for a premier venue to raise a glass to life and the spirit of giving this Christmas, then look no further than Hermanus’s pinnacle hospitality property, The Marine. This five-star luxury hotel will be hosting a sumptuous Christmas feast this year, for Christmas Eve Dinner and Christmas Day Lunch, with bookings open to both resident hotel guests and visitors alike. The meal begins with views of the ocean and the sea cliffs and pre-dinner drinks and canapés. These include a traditional combination of pork and cranberry that has been transformed into dainty sausage rolls. There are also chimichurri steak bites and grilled zucchini and goat’s cheese roll ups. For vegetarians, the sausage rolls make way for halloumi fries with roasted garlic aioli, and the steak is replaced with mushroom. To start, the smoked white fish tartare is dressed with lime, crème fraîche, edamame beans and herb oil. The vegetarian option sees avocado and red onion in place of the fish. This is [...]

29 February comes around only once every four years, which makes it a day worthy of recognition. It’s time to make the general nuttiness that is Leap Day even zanier with the Mad Hatter’s Leap Year Tea Party at The Marine in association with Carrol Boyes. This wonderfully (and deliberately) bonkers affair is like something straight out of Alice in Wonderland. There’s a special guest MC on the day and a Mad Hatter dress theme, of course, with prizes for the smallest, largest and maddest hats – so start designing your headwear now! Tables will be adorned with beaded traditional African craft sculptures by Monkeybiz, Carrol Boyes’ charity beneficiary. After a refreshing welcome drink, high tea will be served and guests will get to play some fabulous party games, like hat throwing (unless you prefer to hold on to yours!) and pin the Cheshire Cat Smile. There are prizes to be won, so be ready to put your best foot forward. The Marine’s high teas are scrumptious, generous affairs and this chocolate-themed repast, which includes luxurious Carrol Boyes chocolates, will be no different – keep coming back for more at our goodies-laden tables! Each guest will go home with a [...]

Summer is here – and Origins’ Executive Chef, Tronette Dippenaar, is proud to present the restaurant’s comprehensive, fresh new menu for the season. Look out for traditional favourites with an Asian twist in the airy, modern restaurant, which boasts unobstructed views of Walker Bay. With cliff-walks almost obligatory in Hermanus, you can afford to indulge in the generous fare on offer in this laid-back venue. Choose from a huge range of starters and salads to kick off your meal – try the traditional bouillabaisse seafood soup, fragrant steamed mussels, poke bowls with Norwegian salmon and South Atlantic tuna, and the signature Origins Salad: pears, Overberg Gruberg cheese, walnuts, celery, bacon bits and croutons dressed in whole grain mustard vinaigrette. The wild mushroom and broccoli potato gnocchi, served with Parmesan, mushroom cream and pine nuts, is an option for vegetarians. Main courses serve up some delectable concoctions: try the grilled Springbok loin with creamy Parmesan risotto, wild mushrooms, pearl onions, red cabbage and sultana chutney; the tender roasted Overberg rack of lamb with capsicum couscous, aubergine purée, pearly onions and warm lamb vinaigrette; or the justifiably famous Walker Bay fish curry – locally sourced fish and shellfish seasoned with Thai spices, [...]

Hermanus is spoilt for choice when it comes to eating out – as you might expect from a popular holiday destination. A plethora of watering holes, takeaways, concessions and sea-view restaurants hug the clifftop above the old harbour. There’s a restaurant in pretty much every direction you look – and unlike the elusiveness and wonder of whale-spotting, here you are at least guaranteed sight of a waitron without it being a total fluke. While there is a host of refreshment stations, many of these are merely middle of the road franchises that simply find themselves opportunistically located in Hermanus. And there’s nothing wrong with that at all. It’s certainly convenient for a wide range of palates and pockets. But if you’re looking for a restaurant that is special, for a place that speaks to the region, and to the people who love living there, that is of its context and that is above the ordinary; then look to options such as Bientang’s Cave (which offers seafood in a converted cave above the waves), or Dutchies beach restaurant on Grotto Beach. Look to Origins at The Marine. Although The Marine is part of The Liz McGrath Collection, the hotel is open [...]

Don’t underestimate the restorative powers of The Marine. One of the oldest buildings in Hermanus, The Marine was originally founded as a healing sanatorium where guests could benefit from the rejuvenating power of the sometimes bracing sometimes balmy sea air. Doctors have been recommending trips to the shore for “bathing holidays” since the 18th century. It follows that The Marine was first built around this time, so that visitors could get suitably drunk on Hermanus’ famed “Champagne Air”. The sanatorium graduated to a hotel in 1902. The medical dictates of days-gone-by have been borne out by modern scientists, who have ably demonstrated how waves charge the frail bodies of us mere mortals with all sorts of negative ions that do indeed promote good health. But it certainly won’t take a doctor or scientist to tell you you’re in the right place once you arrive at The Marine. Perched on the Hermanus clifftop overlooking a tidal pool, there’s no faulting the location of this historic gem with its pristine views over Walker Bay, the Overberg and beyond. You can most certainly spot whales from your hotel window and the sea shouts a seductive Siren’s song from the rocky seashore below the [...]

Tronette Dippenaar, Head Chef at The Marine in Hermanus, oversees the popular Origins restaurant as well as breakfast venue The Pavilion. Her charismatic and energetic approach to food and service, and her leadership skills have been an asset to the hotel’s culinary offering since she joined the group in 2008. In her 10 years with The Liz McGrath Collection, she’s worked at all three of the hotels, and has now returned to where she started at a Chef de Partie in 2008. She later transferred to The Plettenberg hotel on the Garden Route, where she was promoted to Head Chef, and then on to her third hotel in the group, Cellars-Hohenort. Her next venture was overseeing the culinary offering of the Lord Milner hotel in the tiny historic town of Matjiesfontein. She was there for three years before coming full circle back to Hermanus and to The Marine as Head Chef in 2017. Tronette grew up on a farm in Robertson and attended Tygerberg Hotel School before embarking on her culinary career at The Aghulas Country Lodge. Later gaining international experience in Scotland in a Relais and Chateaux environment, she fell in love with the 5-star hotel industry. Her long [...]
