The V&A Waterfront, located in the heart of Cape Town and with Table Mountain as its backdrop, is one of Africa’s most visited destinations, receiving more than 25 million visits from locals and tourists annually. But it’s not just location that makes a retail destination iconic, it’s also foresight – making bold decisions backed by robust data and recognising the retailers who evolve alongside them. That dual strategy is playing out in the form of the V&A Waterfront’s award-winning retail ecosystem, and in its increasingly powerful data platform, developed in partnership with PwC (PricewaterhouseCoopers), launched in 2023. ‘We knew we had a lot of data,’ says Alex Kabalin, Executive Manager of Retail at the V&A Waterfront, ‘but until recently, we weren’t using it as well as we could to support our tenants. That’s changed.’ A data-driven retail ecosystem Thanks to the PwC Insights programme, the V&A Waterfront now collects and analyses over 11 million transactions over a six-month period, from card swipes that are completely anonymous and compliant with the POPI Act and GDPR (General Data Protection Regulation). These insights include country of origin, and location and time of spend. The result is a living map of how and when [...]

By showcasing African designs anywhere from the United Nations to Times Square in New York City, ONEOFEACH challenges global narratives that overlook the vibrancy of our continent’s cultures. Using beadwork, weaving and printing, the brand translates modern South African, Zimbabwean and Botswanan patterns onto its products, bringing relevance to traditional art and design. In recognition of its stellar work, the local fashion and homeware brand received the Empowerment Impact Award and the Global Brand Ambassador of the Year Award at the 2024 V&A Waterfront Neighbourhood Retail Awards. The awards ceremony was held at the stylish new restaurant Spyced in the Silo District in late September. The two categories in which ONEOFEACH received accolades were judged by Wakanda Founder Miles Khubekha, Cape Town Tourism CEO Enver Duminy and Wesgro Chief Tourism Officer, Monika Iuel. ‘ONEOFEACH exemplifies the V&A Waterfront’s core values, showcasing the best that South Africa is capable of,’ says V&A Retail Executive, Alex Kabalin. ‘As a woman-led business prioritising job creation and training through The African Academy of Fashion, the team is deserving of the Empowerment Impact Award. Its growing international presence, especially in New York, represents South African talent and the V&A’s commitment to innovation. We are privileged [...]

Jasper Eales (Chief Creative Officer and Co-founder) A lifestyle label marketing responsibly-made bags and apparel, Sealand has added to its growing list of accolades by scoring top marks as a leading sustainability brand at the inaugural V&A Waterfront Neighbourhood Retail Awards. The awards were announced in September at Spyced Restaurant in the Silo District, where Sealand won the Our Better Nature Sustainability Award. There were 34 judges overall, five of whom judged the sustainability category. They were: Twyg founder and Editor Jackie May, the Green Building Council’s Jenni Lombard, Dr Judy Mann-Lang of the Two Oceans Aquarium Foundation, Heather Parker from V&A SOLVE, and Petro Myburgh, Senior Manager: Sustainability at V&A Waterfront. With a shop in the Victoria & Alfred Mall (and outlets in Sandton, Stellenbosch and Hout Bay), Sealand exemplifies the sustainable goals that define the V&A Waterfront and are practised at this iconic mixed-use destination. ‘Sealand embodies our mission to cultivate a community centred on sustainability,’ says Alex Kabalin, Executive Retail Director at the V&A Waterfront. ‘Our judges were very impressed by the brand’s exceptional delivery of every criteria for the award: measurable proof of a low carbon footprint, significant waste reduction, and active community engagement.
At the water’s edge, where visitors from near and far gather for an unparalleled retail experience, public opinion is paramount. The V&A Waterfront would not be the inclusive, accessible neighbourhood it is without the support of its visitors, which is why this year’s new Neighbourhood Retail Tenant Awards are turning to the people who matter most to have their say. The People’s Choice Award, which will be awarded to one store and one restaurant in the precinct, will be determined by a public vote – giving visitors the power to support the establishments that make their Waterfront experience a special one. Nominations, which close at midnight on 4 August 2024, are open for the public to put forward their favourite store (any place to shop at or experience) and restaurant (sit-down or takeaway) in the neighbourhood. Everyone who nominates their two top picks goes into a draw to win a R1 000 V&A Waterfront voucher. Thereafter, the five stores and five restaurants which garner the most nominations will be put forward for voting to win the 2024 People’s Choice Award. Then its up to the public to have their say once again: vote for your favourite store and restaurant from the finalists [...]

Cape Town’s V&A Waterfront continues to power ahead with full occupancy of its shopping centres, as well as rising sales and substantial growth, despite reports of online shopping upending traditional bricks and mortar. Retail sales were up more than 70% at the end of May 2024 compared to 2019 pre-Covid levels. New brands are visible, keeping the tenant mix up-to-the-minute and relevant, while longstanding tenants are investing in fresh shopfronts and fitouts. Clearly, many retailers continue to see the physical store, staffed by knowledgeable teams that engage customers around products, as critical to success – along with a superb location in a world-renowned mixed-use destination that is simply unlike any other: the V&A Waterfront champions art and design, supports entrepreneurship and innovation, and leads the charge around sustainable business practice. All these elements are woven into the reimagined Tenant Service Excellence Awards, relaunched as the V&A Waterfront Neighbourhood Awards in June 2024, and aimed at recognising and promoting excellence in different spheres – the kind that attracts new and returning visitors. ‘We’ve moved towards a much more holistic awards programme, as we’ve realised it’s not just about customer service; it’s about so much more, and retailers need to provide the [...]

V&A Waterfront Art in Public Places Programme launches a new outdoor sculpture The V&A Waterfront’s Art in Public Places Programme unveiled its most recent sculpture commission, Michele Mathison’s Angular Mass, at the V&A Waterfront’s Silo District on Thursday, 15 February 2018. The sculpture comprises of five large flywheels that formed an integral part of the original Grain Silo machinery when it was first constructed in 1921. When the building was repurposed as the new Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA), the flywheels were given to artist Michele Mathison. He used the wheels to create a static sculpture that nevertheless captures the dynamic motion of their rotational drive, and the sheer weight and size of the wheels. The sculpture forms part of the V&A Waterfront’s Art in Public Places programme. This ongoing initiative brings creative outdoor elements to the property, allowing visitors to interact with and enjoy sizeable works of art on a free, open-air platform that is open 24 hours a day. Angular Mass is the latest in a number of other sculptures installed across the V&A Waterfront by artists such as Noria Mabasa, Mohau Modisakeng, Kyle Morland, Cameron Platter, Carl Frederik Reuterswärd, Claudette Schreuders and Gavin Younge. Mathison has drawn critical [...]

For the first time on the African continent, a curated selection of the world’s biggest design awards – the internationally renowned INDEX: Design to Improve Life® based in Copenhagen – will participate as a collaboration partner with Open Design Cape Town Festival. The selection of innovative design that showcases how design improves lives in Africa and beyond, is a featured highlight of the festival’s “Design is for Tomorrow” 2015 Open Design expo showcase, which runs from 12-23 August 2015. “With challenges like ebola, electricity supply and housing, Africa is an amazing base for designers whose projects seek to improve lives through innovative design,” said Suné Stassen, Open Design Festival Director. “The solutions to these and other problems lie in innovative designs produced by people with a passion for making things. We cannot underestimate the ability of designers, innovators and even the man on the street to change the world.” The 12-day city-wide festival will also host a number of other innovative design projects and exhibitions derived from international partnerships with Denmark, the Netherlands, Austria and the United States at various festival hubs such as Cape Town City Hall, the Watershed and the Lookout at the V&A Waterfront.
Artworks made in the multiple are at the centre of three inter-related events at Open Design Cape Town, hosted by EDITIONS Cape Town at Cape Town City Hall. To kick off Open Design on Thursday 13 August, Katherine Bull and Warren Editions performed, Lessons in Transformation The Speech. This site-specific performance was dedicated to the occasion of Nelson Mandela’s first public speech, made on the veranda of City Hall on 11 February 1990 – the day of his release from prison. Bull interprets by means of engraving onto perspex the projecting moving image of Mandela’s speech. The artist distills the moving image into the four process colours – yellow, magenta, cyan and black. These become the matrices for a colour combination print. Printing took place by Warren Editions while Bull engraved the matrices, bringing together a partnership of mark-making and the impression of these marks in ink on substrate. The performance spread out in two rooms – one dedicated to a satellite studio space for Warren Editions. The imprint of the matrices over one another blends the four process colours into a full chroma of the moving image interpreted by Bull. Occurring alongside, the exhibition HOST is organised [...]

An iconic French bubbly, GH Mumm boasts a luxurious sensibility that has been translated into a beautiful new branded environment within Seelan Restaurant & Bar at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. Created in the finest materials – as befitting the champagne – the self-contained GH Mumm area consists of a striking bar front, counter, DJ deck and arched back display. NightVision’s design solution celebrates GH Mumm’s rich identity yet sympathetically and seamlessly transitions into the rest of the upmarket Seelan Restaurant & Bar interior. Elements of the GH Mumm brand identity – most specifically the packaging design – have been directly translated and reinforced through the use of red, gold and white. Gold finishes were used for the inlaid GH Mumm insignia on the bar front and the laser-cut detailing on the counter-top. The cutout shapes themselves reflect elements of the brand. Red LED strip lighting illuminates the arched back bar with a warm crimson glow, and serves to highlight an exclusive display of GH Mumm bottles of varying sizes. The arched structure mimics the dockside architecture of the V&A Waterfront in a nod to the greater context and the harbour just beyond Seelan’s doors. The structure is rendered [...]

A new set of opulent GH Mumm Outdoor Lounges perfectly complements the glamorous nautical experience to be had at Shimmy Beach Club, an upmarket entertainment destination at the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. Showcasing charming Catamaran-styled features, the lounges were designed for luxurious summer partying. The GH Mumm lounges were commissioned by Pernod Ricard and created by brand experience experts NightVision, sister company to leading interiors firm Inhouse Brand Architects. Thanks to creative input from Inhouse’s award-winning Creative Director, Aidan Hart, the GH Mumm lounges are more than just easy on the eye, boasting plenty of practical design elements. The outside frames can easily be disassembled and re-assembled – so that the lounges can be moved around quickly and easily – and consist of waterproof aluminum. Reconstructed plastic composite was used to create a sleek faux timber look for the floors with the benefit of being stain and rot resistant – an added bonus when being so close to the sea and the corrosive salt air. The lounge “roof” consists of a stretched canopy, creating a yacht-like look, complemented by high-end yachting fabric used for the upholstery. The curtains feature striking GH Mumm branding were designed for privacy and to provide shade. [...]
