This could be one of wine tasting’s most (in)famous quotes. Occasionally, we do need to resort to brutal honesty or shock factor to describe wine, to define that which is rather difficult to pin down – even for a professional. If it were easy, we wouldn’t have to study for 5 years and sit 10 examinations to be called a Master of Wine. Tasting wine as impartially as possible to evaluate its merits is separate from exercising personal preference and drinking wine for sheer enjoyment. For some consumers, the desire to graduate from casual drinker to aficionado is how ‘swirling, sniffing, spitting types’ are made. None of us emerges from the womb clutching a spittoon and a ready-made repertoire of tasting notes. For others such as cellar masters, winemakers, sommeliers, judges, critics and any industry professionals, wine is not merely a side passion; it is a lifelong career in which tasting is critical and forms part of the educational training. It is widely acknowledged to be far easier to score a wine when vital details such as variety or blend, region and vintage are already known; it is much harder when we are forced to rely solely on sensorial sleuth [...]

One of the world’s most consistently awarded luxury wine estates, De Toren Private Cellar, is now available to the world through virtual tours. Thanks to new forms of digital content, the globe top’s cultural institutions and luxury brands – the likes of the renowned Tate in London or Milan’s stylish Fondazione Prada – are now more accessible than ever before. Our society’s marked shift towards virtual engagement has opened up similar possibilities for the South African wine industry to broaden its global audience via live streaming content, webinars, e-tours and so on. In particular, one of Stellenbosch’s most consistently awarded wine estates, De Toren, producer of limited-edition luxury wines such as the opulent Book XVII (the 2018 vintage has just been released), the iconic De Toren Fusion V, and other collectible wines, has eagerly embraced digital means to connect with its ardent fans. Wine connoisseurs, critics, collectors and an appreciative audience at large can now embark on more extensive digital explorations of De Toren. De Toren has introduced new and engaging virtual tasting experiences, tours and sessions with the winemakers, which make this private cellar available to lovers of the vine anywhere in the world. Even when COVID-19 lockdown restrictions [...]

A treasured national monument, the historic Twee Jonge Gezellen farm in Tulbagh – the home of leading MCC Krone – has recently undergone a sensitive restoration and renovation directed by siblings Abigail and Sven Rands. Newly re-opened to the public, the al fresco Tasting Deck and adjoining Tasting Room now boast stylish, custom-made accessories and key pieces of South African furniture design by the likes of Gregor Jenkin, Wiid Design and Meyer Von Wielligh, thanks to the project’s creative director Tracy Lynch of Studio Lee Lynch. Vistors can journey through a series of extraordinary spaces that are filled with contemporary art, sculpture and collectible design, before moving on to sample Krone’s one-vintage-only MCC. Tastings are complimentary and the setting is extraordinary.
Littlegig, the world’s only 24-hour, all-inclusive, curated festival, returns to Wiesenhof Farm in Cape Town from 28-29 January 2017 with a progressive line-up of highly coveted experiences spanning international music, food tastings, art, fashion, design and fine wine. The festival boasts a high-level, tutored Littlegig Wine Tasting that features wines which have been handpicked by top local winemaker, Miles Mossop. Mossop, the winemaker at Tokara and Miles Mossop Wines, was invited to curate the Wine Tasting at Littlegig 2017 after hosting Littlegig’s previous tutored tasting at the inaugural festival. The 2016 Littlegig Wine Tasting was such a successful aspect of the first event that it has now become entrenched in the festival programme as a vital ingredient in the carefully edited foodie offering – one that includes a feast by “wonder chef” Rasmus Munk from the Alchemist restaurant in Copenhagen, Denmark. Mossop’s 2017 Littlegig Wine Tasting focuses on wines that hail from the Simonsberg region, which is the same area where Littlegig festival is held. But the choice is not a sentimental one. The Simonsberg is one of the country’s top wine-producing areas, home to many well-established farms that consistently produce award-winning wines. Mossop has chosen a selection of wines which [...]
