Female harvesters and vineyard tenders at De Toren Private Cellar play an integral role in the estate’s world-class wines. The permanent vineyard and cellar team is sixty percent female, and women hold key senior management roles, too. It’s an unusual statistical skew for the wine industry, but for De Toren — which boldly embraces innovation — being an exception to the rule is all in a day’s work. De Toren, a boutique winery specialising in luxurious, world-class Bordeaux-style wines, is situated on the Polkadraai Hills in Stellenbosch, Cape Town. Over and above its exceptional female team, the estate also lays claim to other industry firsts, like being the first to plant and produce five-varietal Bordeaux-style blends in South Africa and the first to introduce a gravity-fed cellar. Acknowledging the finesse that women bring to the vineyard and production process is woven into the De Toren’s philosophy, but in Women’s Month, glasses are raised to celebrate their contribution. “It is such a pleasure to be associated with an estate where innovation on a scientific and practical level remains a topic of discussion. There is no lack of excitement at De Toren when it comes to producing wine in a quest for [...]

Cape Town-based Catherine Wijnberg is a successful entrepreneur with experience in starting, growing and operating businesses in five different sectors across three countries. She was born in Ndola, Zambia to an entrepreneurial father. The fourth of five children she travelled from an early age to the UK for boarding school and studied agriculture in Scotland and Australia. Catherine started her working life as an agricultural economist at the Zambia Farmers Union. Her first entrepreneurial venture was a leap of faith into the new forex auction system in Zambia and an import business serving the local farming network. The move to South Africa sparked a range of business ventures including import-export, farming, transportation, an apartment hotel, recruitment, metaphysical healing and architectural software before starting Fetola in 2006. She founded Fetola with a vision to contribute to the transformation of the South African economy by growing the small business sector. For it is here that jobs are created, success is cultivated, and women, youth, and rural communities can create self-empowered futures. She was also determined that one woman could make a difference and empower other women to do so, too. Fetola has grown rapidly, from a small consultancy into a recognised SME [...]

Every year, South Africans celebrate the day that commemorates thousands of protesting women who marched onto the Union Buildings in 1956 in defiance of the regime’s enforcement of pass laws. To pay homage to the fearless women who changed our political landscape, the nation celebrates Women’s Month in August 2018 – the observance of this homage is especially heralded at Carrol Boyes Functional Art, where women make up over half of the business’s workforce. Renowned and celebrated artist-designer Carrol Boyes trail-blazed against gender inequality in the workplace when she birthed her iconic brand, Carrol Boyes Functional Art. Carrol trained and worked as a teacher and immersed herself in her creative career in earnest when she was 35 years old, and so the legacy of luxury flatware, giftware, tableware and home accessories came to be; her distinctive works are now sold in over 30 countries with women spearheading the Carrol Boyes Functional Art agenda. The female South African workforce weighs in at 44% whilst Carrol Boyes Functional Art has exceeded this total, boasting an impressive 67% women-led staff compliment! “I believe Carrol makes a conscious effort to employ women,” says Michelé Stuurman, Head of Marketing and PR at Carrol Boyes Functional [...]
