“Celebrating Architecture in Africa” – The Africa Architecture Awards Colloquium
The winners of the inaugural Africa Architecture Awards, the first Pan-African architecture competition, will be announced at a gala awards ceremony to be held at the newly opened Zeitz Mocaa in Cape Town on 28 September 2017. Following the awards ceremony, a free public colloquium titled Celebrating Architecture in Africa will be held the next day to discuss the winning projects. This event will take place on 29 September 2017 at the Institute for Creative Arts at UCT Hiddingh Campus in Cape Town from 09h00 onwards. Participants include members of the Steering Panel and Master Jury for the Africa Architecture Awards.
The colloquium is organised by Zahira Asmal, director of The City and advisor to the Africa Architecture Awards, and is hosted by the founder of the awards, Saint-Gobain, in conjunction with UCT’s Institute for Creative Arts. There will be three sessions in total, with the first two sessions will moderated by writer and critic Sean O’Toole, and the third hosted by Ghanaian architect Joe Addo. The public may attend all or any of the sessions.

Joe Addo hosts conversations on the African Condition, with composer Neo Muyanga and other invited guests. Addo will moderate an hour-and-a-half discussion with friends, both old and new, architects and non-architects, that will touch on contemporary African issues through individual perspectives. The discussion will span the role of creativity in Africa’s development, looking at the meaning of architecture in this context.
