Four delicious ways to celebrate Heritage Day at Spier
With over 300 years of recorded history, Spier might be one of the oldest wine farms in the country — but it’s clear that this Stellenbosch icon is keeping things fresh. Come Tuesday 24 September, it’s offering visitors four delicious ways to celebrate Heritage Day.
Tuck into a heritage-inspired picnic among historic Cape Dutch architecture
Leave those city workday cares behind as you soak up the spring sun surrounded by a record number of 21 beautiful gables – more than any other Cape wine farm. Your Heritage Day picnic basket will be just as delightful as the view, crammed full of tasty Southern African favourites, including mosbolletjies with butter and jam, farm-baked bread, smoked snoek and corn samoosas, pickled fish and chicken with peri-peri mayonnaise. Save space for the Amarula fudge! Exclusively available on Heritage Day, the basket costs just R695 for two people and includes a bottle Spier Signature wine. Vegetarian? Don’t feel left out – Spier has you covered with a specially designed vegetarian basket (which is just as delicious!). Pre-book yours at www.spier.co.za.
A brilliant braai buffet at Spier Hotel
Heritage Day is also National Braai Day, and this special day isn’t quite the same without some sizzling meat on the grill. Head to the Spier Hotel for a braai buffet laden with perfectly grilled awesomeness, including Farmer Angus’s pasture-reared pork ribs and beef steaks, bacon and liver skilpadjies, mushroom risotto, cheese-stuffed butternut and more. Fresh seasonal salads, farm bread and decadent desserts round out the meal. The buffet costs just R300 per person or R150 for children under 12. Book via www.spier.co.za.
A smokehouse feast at Vadas
When it comes to both ingredients and time-tested recipes, local is truly lekker at Vadas Smokehouse & Bakery this Heritage Day. Overlooking the sun-dappled lawns of the Werf where kids can safely roam free, Vadas is offering a delicious, heritage-inspired culinary adventure for one day only. To start with: biltong pâté and roosterkoek, smoked fish and chutney with vetkoek and chicken samoosas. Ethically-sourced meats are the main event: lamb and tomato bredie and beef shin curry along with sides like creamy pap and a three bean salad. Then, melktert and traditional fudge for dessert. The special set menu comes to just R395 per person. Book your place by calling 021 809 1137, or on DinePlan.
Seasonal spring pairing at the Spier Tasting Room
Raise a glass to Spier’s storied – and delicious — winemaking heritage on the stoep of its Tasting Room. While you admire majestic mountain views, enjoy the elegant new Spring Tasting which matches four fabulous wines with an array of canapés. Each of these treats are made from seasonal ingredients sourced from the Spier farm as well as other nearby, ethical producers. The pairing costs just R120 per person. If you miss it on Heritage Day, you can still enjoy it up until the 30 November 2019 – exclusively at the Spier Tasting Room.
