Spier takes top podium position as most successful producer overall at the 2022 Trophy wine show
At the 2022 Trophy Wine Show award ceremony held on 6 July 2022, Spier Wine Farm took home the coveted top spot as the ‘Most Successful Producer Overall’. In addition, Spier also received the ‘Investec Trophy for Best Merlot’ for the Spier Woolworths Signature Series Merlot 2018, as well as the ‘Harold Eedes Trophy for Best Chenin Blanc’ which went to the Spier Woolworths Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2020. This is the second time Spier has been awarded with both the ‘Most Successful Producer Overall’ and the ‘Harold Eedes Trophy’. Once again, this exemplary set of results validates Spier’s philosophy that consistency is key to quality.
Spier’s Trophy Award follows hot on the heels of a stellar awards season, which includes winning three Grand Gold medals at the Concours Mondial de Bruxelles, as well as being titled Platter’s Wine Guide ‘Editor’s Choice: Winery of the Year 2022’.
About the Wines
Spier Woolworths Private Collection Chenin Blanc 2020:
Having matured for 14 months in French oak barrels, this wine offers complex aromas of citrus, honeydew melon and white peach with layers of beautifully integrated vanilla and oak spice. The palate is medium-bodied with a seamless and smooth finish. Enjoy with spicy prawn noodle stir fry or your favourite pork cut and oven-baked sweet potato with orange rind and cinnamon.
Spier Woolworths Signature Series Merlot 2018:
Made from 17-year-old dryland vines, this wine truly expresses the coastal terroir of Groenekloof, Darling. Brimming with fragrant violet notes, black cherry and subtle mint, the mid-palate is rich and layered with dense, smooth tannins. Enjoy with a rack of Karoo lamb and baked winter vegetables.
Now in its 21st year, The Trophy Wine Show was hosted at Investec Cape Town and enjoys an unparalleled reputation for identifying the very best Cape wines. As past judge Jancis Robinson MW OBE famously observed: The Trophy Wine Show is “possibly the toughest competition in the world.” This year, 673 wines were entered into the show, of which only 20 won trophies – with Spier bringing home three of them.
“The Trophy Wine Show judging panel is rigorous, with their goal to serve the consumers. I resonate with this, as at Spier, our approach is much the same. Every wine we craft – no matter what price point or style – has to meet our strict standards. Nothing but the best can carry the Spier name,” shares Johan Jordaan, Cellar Master at Spier.
Spier proudly produces these award-winning wines exclusively for Woolworths. Both can be purchased directly from Woolworths stores nationwide or online at www.woolworths.co.za.
