ALC’s Spring Summer 2018 collection embodies the sense of nostalgia felt by Amanda when she is near the ocean; “Swimming in the sea and floating on my back just beyond the break, looking up at the sky and experiencing the changes and repeated pattern of the rhythms of the waves…” This feeling shines through in the serenity of ALC’s colour palette, which comprises of naturals, whites, black, navy, as well as shades of green and blue. This vividness is highlighted by the sweeping texture in our signature print. ALC wanted there to be visible movement as the garments are worn and lived in. They have predominantly used linens, cottons and rayons, with the addition of Shweshwe, checks, stripes, chambrays and dobby cottons. The garment details are minimal, considered and functional. The silhouettes are expressive, soft and voluminous, and the styling is layered yet retains a level of simplicity and sophistication. The collection was presented at South African Fashion Week on 11 April 2018 in Johannesburg, and will be available to shop online and at The Space stores later this year FOLLOW ALC Instagram: @alc_woman & @alc_man Facebook: alcwoman & ALC.MENSWEAR #AmandaLairdCherry #ALCman STOCKISTS The Space & Space [...]

At #AZA18, the theme ‘WeTheCity: Memory & Resilience’ engages head on the changing role of architects in the built environment and architects’ obligations to the public – through a flexible and affordable programme that includes keynote presentations by renowned local and international speakers, professional practice sessions, student design sessions, films, workshops, walking tours, and a series of inspiring exhibitions and awards – all at Pretoria’s most exciting inner-city venue, 012central. Says Marguerite Pienaar of the University of Pretoria’s Department of Architecture, “The right to adequate housing, as one of the most important of all basic human rights, is recognised in a number of international human rights instruments and treaties, yet we have made very little progress in the delivery of new approaches to housing densities and resultant typologies. “Ultimately, we must choose to make cities sustainable and resilient, and it is within this context that architecture should address basic human rights. Through issues of resilience focussed on the larger discussion of the socio-economic implications of housing provision, WeTheCity considers that the future of our cities is practically the future of our humanity.” As a highly participatory platform for envisioning scenarios of change, #AZA18 will host several activities that will question [...]

REVEALED: CAESARSTONE X SNARKITECTURE 2018 The annual prestige of Milan Design Week is around the corner. It’s the affair that sees design norms challenged and Caesarstone experimenting with their dynamic surfaces in collaborative projects. In 2017 we welcomed a folkloric playground by Jaime Hayon, and before that Tom Dixon brought us the Elemental Kitchens. This year we delve into an offering by New York design moguls, Snarkitecture, titled ‘Altered States’, which has everyone intrigued… Centered around today’s kitchen must-have, Snarkitecture have created four, highly conceptual takes on the kitchen island. Using Caesarstone’s surfaces as the golden thread, each one utilizes a different Caesarstone colour. Crafted with reference to water in various states, the islands take form with stratified layers that resemble natural topography. Each one will be exhibited in Milan as part of Fuorisalone, in large-scale. “The theme of the kitchen island resonated with us from the very beginning because of the understanding that the kitchen is the social hub of the house.” – Snarkitecture partner and co-founder Alex Mustonen. The venue that will home the collaboration is an outstanding example of industrial chic, and has an energy like no other. The Future Establish Hotel, Corso di Porta Romana 10, seen below: While creating environments and experiences that are designed [...]

The Design Indaba has played an instrumental role in the establishment of Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa, located in the Silo District in the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. Design Indaba founder Ravi Naidoo provided the catalyst which enabled the appointment of global “starchitect” Thomas Heatherwick, the UK-based visionary behind the repurposed Silo building, now home to a world-class collection of contemporary art from Africa and its Diaspora. Heatherwick, no stranger to the Design Indaba, had spoken previously at the award-winning event years ahead of the Zeitz MOCAA project, and then again, when he revealed his architectural concept to bring the disused Silo building back to life. His plan for the building was revealed live to the Design Indaba audience at the 2014 edition of the conference. Heatherwick returned to the Design Indaba speaker line-up in 2018, and his appearance in Cape Town was timed to mark the opening of the new gallery wing. As a thank you to the Design Indaba for the vital role it has played, Zeitz MOCAA approached Naidoo with the idea of naming a wing of the gallery after the Design Indaba. Instead of claiming the glory, Naidoo generously asked if the honour could rather [...]
