Always known for its boldly eclectic aesthetic, Molori Safari chose the dynamic South African design team at Hesse Kleinloog to take a fresh look at its glamorous interiors. Known for their creative thinking from concept development to finishing touches, Megan Hesse and Andrea Kleinloog began to put together the new direction in the second quarter of 2020. Location: Molori’s Ngwedi LoungeRug Artist: Cameron PlatterPhotography: Inge PrinsVisual Production: Klara van Wyngaarden ‘Our initial involvement was meant to be a small, light intervention but the circular nature of the architecture meant that we had to marry our design with the organic structure of the lodge,’ said Kleinloog, who masterminded the new interiors. In addition, artworks from the owner’s diverse personal collection – by artists such as Norman Catherine, Lady Skollie and Edoardo Villa, among others – were to be added to the lodge, taking the guest art experience up another level. Very quickly, the talented interiors team realised that the organic floor spaces would be the place to start as many of the walls were curved and ideally suited to colourful rugs that would complement the bold new artwork. But as everyone in the industry knows, the choice of circular designer rugs [...]

Paul Cocksedge announced his first ever project in South Africa, during Design Indaba’s annual conference on Friday 28 February 2020. The internationally recognised British designer is creating a permanent timber bridge across the Liesbeek River in Cape Town, within the public open space of the The Upper Liesbeek River Garden. It’s Cocksedge’s second project to explore the use of wood and its environmental credentials – following on from his Please Be Seated installation at London Design Festival 2019. The bridge is being developed in collaboration with Design Indaba, WSP and building company XLAM. It will be made from the invasive Eucalyptus tree wood, offsetting its negative effects by using it as a building material. The species originates in Australia but was brought to South Africa in the 1800s for use as shade, windbreaks and plantation timber. The tree can, in fact, negatively impact the water table. Cocksedge plans to work with X-Lam to turn the Eucalyptus tree into Cross Laminated Timber (CLT) – a structural, prefabricated timber panel which is a more sustainable alternative to concrete, masonry and steel, requiring less water and less energy to manufacture. The timber is glued in longitudinal and transverse layers, which creates a very [...]

When Jim Brett and Ed Gray decided to launch a sister property to their exclusive-use Villa Maison Noir in Hout Bay, Cape Town, it was with the intention of creating yet another sanctuary-like space that was inspired and informed by the natural beauty of the bordering Oudekraal Nature Reserve and surrounding areas. To bring this vision to fruition, the couple earmarked a plot of land right next door to Villa Maison Noir and dreamed of replacing the drab 1970s-style building housed on the site with something much more memorable. Their wealth of interior experience, passion and expertise stood them in good stead to dream up a property that would do justice to the astounding setting. Between them, Brett (previously of Anthropologie and West Elm) and Gray (who founded luxury furnishing store Bruges Home) have a passion for design and art. This new project provided the perfect blank canvas on which to continue the creative journey they started with Villa Maison Noir. Like Villa Maison Noir, Villa Verte – so called for its densely treed setting – was to be a showcase for exciting furniture design, artwork and craft. But first, the structure had to be conceived, and to achieve this, [...]

The start of a new decade has brought with it a wave of inspiration, and with that a collection of new designs from renowned South African lighting company willowlamp. The Radial is one of the new pieces making its design debut this year. In the spirit of evolution, founder and creative director Adam Hoets has built on some of his existing designs with new interpretations stemming from these existing pieces. ‘The Radial is a logical extension of the Lineal – essentially a round version of this piece,’ says Hoets. The Lineal – one of the brand’s most contemporary and more recent pieces, plays with a more minimal and pared-down aesthetic, an example of how the designer has steadily developed willowlamp’s identity. The inspiration behind the Radial hails from a similar source to the Lineal – which comes from the idea of creating a textured grid around a repetitive matrix of lights, and adding chain in layers and in different metallic finishes to add a richness and warm glow. Like virtually all of willowlamp’s pieces, The Radial also draws on the natural world. ‘The Radial refers to the eternal, cyclic ring of life,’ says Hoets. The pervasive popularity of curvaceous shapes [...]

To mark the 25th anniversary of the renowned Design Indaba Conference, the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout, has honoured the founder of this world-class event, Ravi Naidoo, with an annual residency programme in his name. The announcement of the new Ravi Naidoo Residency for Emerging Creatives was made at the recent Design Indaba Conference, which took place from 26-28 February 2020 at the Artscape Theatre Centre in Cape Town, and was broadcast via simulcast to Johannesburg, Durban, Potchefstroom, Port Elizabeth, Namibia and Nairobi. This year, and each year going forward, Clout will select one stand-out creative from the Design Indaba Emerging Creatives class of that year to be the recipient of this Residency. The Design Indaba Emerging Creatives is a longstanding programme spearheaded by Design Indaba and supported by the Department of Arts and Culture. Each year, the Design Indaba selects a class of 50 successful applicants who receive a plethora of support, advice and benefits from the Design Indaba. This ranges from return flights to Cape Town from their home city, and accommodation for the duration of Design Indaba, to tickets to attend the Design Indaba simulcast in Cape Town, the exhibition and display of their work during the Design [...]

Building on last year’s triumphant debut at Milan Design Week, the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout is returning to the Italian design capital with groundbreaking South African design. Once again, the intention is to showcase the country’s creative pedigree to an international audience. The 2020 venture builds on the 2019 concept. This was first conceived and curated by award-winning designer Thabisa Mjo of Mash T and brought to Milan with the support of Nando’s Clout. Mjo’s Sacrosanct (an interactive pod of spaces filled with work by various local talent) highlighted the cutting-edge aesthetic, conceptual and collaborative strengths of young local designers. Sacrosanct wowed visitors to the Ventura Future BASE exhibition venue with its graphic, colourful and dynamic representation of South African creativity via powerful pieces with an Afro-positive message and contemporary bent. This year, Clout – whose goal is to uplift local design and establish South African design as a globally recognized category – returns with the same vibrant attitude in the form of a stand that builds on the initial concept of collaboration, but adds further designers and broadens the scope in the form of fresh new talent. ‘We want to share our positive stories with the world. We want [...]

Muted tones are all rage in the kitchen. Kitchens are often a very chaotic environment and trying to find some calm, is just what your kitchen space may require. Neutral tones create an atmosphere of tranquillity and peace but neutral tones in your kitchen space also make for an easily adapted space that can transform from traditional to country to contemporary. Earth tones and the warmth of wood and stone, along with the rich patina of various metals, combine to set the harmonious mood you require. At Decorex Cape Town you can see this in action via the exciting Trend Kitchen feature, brought to you by Cosentino, that will dish up the best directional design and serve as the launching pad to showcase how you can transform your kitchen space with simple muted tones with the use of the company’s Dekton Slim line. Trend Kitchen by Cosentino The Trend Kitchen feature will highlight the best across various aspects of kitchen design – from surfaces that combine inspiration and function, to spaces that blend living and working zones into one seamless and aesthetic whole.
The Nando’s design programme, Clout, is making waves for established and emerging creatives from South Africa – and the world is taking notice. Nando’s restaurants are well known globally, thanks to their distinctive flame-grilled chicken – but the chain is also becoming renowned for its staunch support of South African design. Nando’s’ progressive design programme, Clout showcases the work of local creatives to the world – most notably by featuring their designs in Nando’s restaurants throughout 35 countries. Patrons will immediately recognise the colourful, vibrant design aesthetic for which South Africa is becoming famous. The story begins in 2015, when Creative Director Tracy Lee Lynch, the founder of Studio Leelynch, redesigned the multifunctional Central Kitchen – aka Nando’s HQ in Johannesburg. Accustomed to curating brand spaces, Lynch transformed the space with the work of more than 50 local designers, reinvigorating it and persuading Nando’s that a home-grown aesthetic was what was needed. “At Central Kitchen you will literally feel Nando’s,” company co-founder Robbie Brozin asserts. Nando’s proceeded to throw their weight behind South African designers – not just having their designs transform the restaurants, but actively seeking new design talent with the aim of developing them further and exporting a [...]

A leading Durban interior designer driven by the satisfaction of his clients, Frans Alexander of Frans Alexander Interiors describes himself as a perfectionist: ‘I’m driven by the result and outcome of each project. Knowing that I have achieved the desired emotion is what pushes me to ensure every one of my clients’ experiences the sense of joy design can bring!’ Frans Alexander Interiors was founded in 2002 and the company works across Residential, Hospitality and Commercial projects. All projects tend to be led by a feeling, an ethos, rather than an aesthetic. ‘I believe that the key to each successful interior lies in the details and it’s there where I like to invest a lot of effort in order to achieve a well-executed space. The small details are what elicit an emotional response from a space,’ he notes. Over and above his own vision however, the designer aims with each project to reflect the client’s own viewpoint. ‘The goal is to create a space which is unique and reflects the homeowner’s personality, but one that is also functional, timeless and comfortable,’ he says. The satisfaction that comes from a job well done is something that inspires and motivates Frans Alexander [...]
