We are humbled to be recognised on the global design stage at this level,” says ARRCC Director Mark Rielly. “It is an honour to be in the company of remarkable designers, including Erin Martin, Kelly Hoppen, Tara Bernard and Martyn Lawrence Bullard,” adds Director Michele Rhoda.
Exchanging big-city living for a more serene lifestyle, a young family opted for the private golf estate of Pearl Valley as its new home. On the outskirts of Paarl – a 30-minute drive from Cape Town – this home affords the couple and their children a style of living where the outdoor environment is a continual reminder of their expansive surrounds. Through the vision of interior architect Jon Case of design studio ARRCC, the living spaces were carefully conceived to produce a home epitomising casual luxury. ‘The subtle details and quality of finishes reflect a seductive living environment,’ says fellow ARRCC director Mark Rielly who also oversaw much of the home’s decorating. There is a strong tactile element throughout the house, which was designed by Gauteng-based architect Gardiol Bergenthuin, and it was this natural quality that the ARRCC team chose to champion, starting in the foyer. Here, ribbon-stone water-walls flank a bridge, with the sounds of cascading water welcoming one inside. Nature’s elements are visible throughout the design, often as focused visual features. By wrapping the home around a central courtyard garden with a reflective pond, the theme of living in nature is a constant connector to the home’s unique [...]

“I really enjoyed contrasting simple geometric forms and monochromatic colours with the classic character of the building,” says Michele Rhoda, ARRCC Director and lead designer on this project. This three bedroom apartment is situated on the fourth floor, overlooking the North Bank of the River Seine in the quiet 16th Arrondissement of Paris. The designers were challenged to balance bespoke contemporary style with classic French flair. The Eiffel Tower just across the river informed the design; ARRCC drew on its unique and recognisable aesthic to inspire individual elements whilst its strikingly close presence guided the internal remodel. Existing narrow passageways and high ceilings were challenges that steered the overall design direction and the conceptualisation of creative alternatives. The vision was to accentuate the high ceilings to capture views and draw light into the space. The result is a clean, calm and memorbable modern space, in which the spectacular Parisian setting take centerstage, and clever refinements to existing architecture add charm and character. ENTRANCE Stepping out of the lobby, an open plan area incorporating the kitchen, breakfast area and salon (lounge) spans the full depth of the apartment. Herringbone timber flooring complements panelling that wraps the interior. A door to the [...]

This La Lucia beach house perfectly balances luxury and comfort with its uncomplicated spaces. Situated on the Kwazulu Natal North Coast just south of Umhlanga, the house is gently nestled between protected milkwood trees and enjoys beautiful ocean views – both of which inspired the design. Bronze aluminium sliding screens cocoon the house and offers protection from the elements as well as providing a unique the signature look for of the building “The surrounding beauty of the environment inspired so much of the design. As designers we are passionate about creating spaces that reflect both the location and our clients – that is how life-enhancing spaces are crafted.” – Mark Rielly, ARRCC Director. ENTRANCE A sense of arrival is created by two milkwood trees flanking the entrance. A floating timber step platform and pergola lead towards the front door of the home. Upon entering, the panorama is only revealed as one reaches the doublevolume hallway – the aligned timber slat cladded ceilings drawing the eye to the seascape ahead. Ocean views are framed perfectly by the screens that envelope the building. “The owners wanted the project to epitomise the spirit of a contemporary beach house with a sense of sophistication.
Resting on the boulders of Bantry Bay, Cape Town, this four bedroomed apartment boasts 270° views over the Atlantic Ocean. After purchasing an entire floor within an older ocean front building, the client challenged the ARRCC team to convert four separate one-bedroom apartments into a luxury holiday retreat. The client’s specific brief on how the apartment was going to be used, informed the configuration of the new design. Since the husband and wife would be using the apartment on their own most of the time, it was decided to create the master bedroom as part of the living areas towards the front of the apartment, with the three guest bedrooms towards the back. This also solved the challenge of ensuring that all rooms have a front or side view over the ocean; this part of the brief being particularly challenging due to the narrow shape of the apartment block. Entering through the front door that is concealed within a timber clad wall, one’s eye is automatically drawn to the magnificent ocean views. These are amplified by fully retractable glass doors which also act as apartment walls. A large raw timber dining table dominates the entrance area which also features a [...]

Located in the leafy suburb of Higgovale, set below the iconic Table Mountain, House Invermark overlooks the city and harbour of Cape Town. Forty seven years after receiving a medal for excellence, House Invermark has been awarded a prestigious Commendation from the Cape Institute for Architecture (CIfA), in recognition of noteworthy contributions to architecture. Designed originally for himself by respected South African architect Gilbert Colyn in 1969, it was inspired by two iconic modernist houses, namely that of Phillip Johnson’s 1949 Glass House and Mies van der Rohe’s 1951 Farnsworth House. The house was purchased by architect Stefan Antoni, director at SAOTA, in 2013. By this stage it had reached a poor state of disrepair and featured numerous inappropriate alterations and additions totally out of character with the language of the building. Had it not been for Antoni’s intervention, it might have faced demolition as its heritage status as being a fine example of contemporary architecture was not recognised. SAOTA’s careful and sensitive alterations and additions have returned the threatened building back to its original state, enhanced its overall composition and significantly refined the living experience to bring it up to date with contemporary living. In the living area, kitchen, [...]

When this two-storey Cape Town (South Africa) property, originally designed by SAOTA a decade ago, was bought by its new owners, they called for a complete renovation with increased accommodation. This left the team of ARRCC interior designers with a challenge that they met head-on and the end result is a statement of architectural and design excellence. According to Mark Rielly, design architect and Jon Case, lead interior designer on this project, “the rewriting of the existing architectural language while maintaining the architectural signature was a key challenge that we had to address. To meet the client brief of more accommodation, we needed to design a third floor for the residence, adding to its stature and changing the façade substantially.” When approaching the entrance located at the rear of the property, the solid structure gives nothing away of the magnificence that unfolds when you enter the residence. The detail visible in the perforated vertical screens that fold away from the curved barrel of the rear façade, do however hint at the subtle signatures that await inside. The rounded walls of the entrance foyer sets the tone for the organically shaped interiors. Rather than being defined by blocks, the spaces inside [...]
