Timed to run over Heritage Month, Sisonke Gallery hosts an exhibition that reflects on Cape Malay identity. This is the second iteration of A Glimpse Between Memoirs, a powerful joint exhibition by artists Shaunez Benting and Whaleed Ahjum, which was previously exhibited at the Bo-Kaap Cultural Hub in February 2024. The show is presented in collaboration with Our Cape Town Heritage (OCTH), an NPO that is committed to protecting, promoting and preserving heritage and culture by exploring visual art and history through education, and is curated by Aaliyah Ahmed. Through childhood memories and the echoes of apartheid, A Glimpse Between Memoirs explores the tension between history and speculation. Drawing on nostalgia, not as escapism but as a critical lens, the artists investigate how the stories we inherit (and the ones we choose to tell) shape the futures we dare to imagine, shining a light on how art can disrupt the status quo and honour ancestral legacies while opening up space for future possibility. Benting’s work reanimates the marginalised spaces of his youth through vibrant composite visuals that blur memory and imagination. Ahjum, whose practice is grounded in research and oil painting, delves into his Southeast Asian roots to uncover cultural [...]

Always known for its boldly eclectic aesthetic, Molori Safari chose the dynamic South African design team at Hesse Kleinloog to take a fresh look at its glamorous interiors. Known for their creative thinking from concept development to finishing touches, Megan Hesse and Andrea Kleinloog began to put together the new direction in the second quarter of 2020. Location: Molori’s Ngwedi LoungeRug Artist: Cameron PlatterPhotography: Inge PrinsVisual Production: Klara van Wyngaarden ‘Our initial involvement was meant to be a small, light intervention but the circular nature of the architecture meant that we had to marry our design with the organic structure of the lodge,’ said Kleinloog, who masterminded the new interiors. In addition, artworks from the owner’s diverse personal collection – by artists such as Norman Catherine, Lady Skollie and Edoardo Villa, among others – were to be added to the lodge, taking the guest art experience up another level. Very quickly, the talented interiors team realised that the organic floor spaces would be the place to start as many of the walls were curved and ideally suited to colourful rugs that would complement the bold new artwork. But as everyone in the industry knows, the choice of circular designer rugs [...]

The artist who painted Nelson Mandela’s favourite portrait has just completed one of Strive Masiyiwa, Zimbabwean billionaire, philanthropist and African Union Special COVID-19 Envoy. Cyril Coetzee has found himself, paintbrush poised, ready to capture some of Africa’s most prominent figures and moments. He was commissioned not once, but twice, to paint the portrait of the late Nelson Mandela for the former president’s private collection. The first of these portraits was completed during Mandela’s presidential term and deemed by Madiba himself as his favourite. This portrait was then sent to the rest of the world in the form of the International Commemorative Postage Stamp for Mandela’s 90th birthday. Flash forward twenty years, and Coetzee is again the artist of choice for dignitaries and prominent names in global affairs and commerce. This time, it’s Strive Masiyiwa, another African making his mark on the continent and the world, who has been captured on canvas. Why Coetzee was chosen by Mandela and now Masiyiwa is clear. His paintings are not just visual masterpieces, they are an intriguing encapsulation of the subject’s soul and essence. Coetzee conveys each subject in a way that says to the viewer: “I’m thinking something, but you don’t quite [...]

The Investec Cape Town Art Fair 2020, which will run from 14-16 February 2020 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), is an experience that is constantly evolving, from year to year, to accommodate the changing dynamics of the local and international art scene. One progression is TOMORROWS/TODAY, one of the main art fair sections that leads each edition. Structured as a curated exhibition, with a prestigious award attached, it is a portal to new visions in the visual arts. The aim of TOMORROWS/TODAY has, from its inception, also been to shine a light on emerging and under-represented artists, set to be tomorrow’s leading names. It is open to those working on and beyond the African continent and as the title implies, the ongoing theme is one of transformation, and experimentation showcasing unorthodox art forms addressing current social and political issues. TOMORROWS/TODAY 2020 guest co-curators Nkule Mabaso (Curator at Michaelis Galleries, Cape Town) and Luigi Fassi (Artistic Director of MAN Contemporary Art Museum in Nuoro, Italy) have been made responsible for presenting a cross-section of the most exciting and emerging and less known artists from Africa, the Diaspora and the world. Artists that will be showcased in the section [...]

The rockstars at Rhizomatiks are already big in Japan – now they’re bringing their experimental collaborations to the stage at Design Indaba’s jubilee conference, from 26-28 February 2020. Known for using programming code, lasers, drones, robotics and augmented reality as the tools of their theatrical trade, these transmedia artists are past masters at interpreting what it means to be human through high-tech innovations. Rhizomatiks was founded in Tokyo in 2006 by artist, programmer and DJ Daito Manabe, in conjunction with art director Seiichi Saito and web developer Hidenori Chiba. Manabe graduated in dynamic sensory programming (DSP) from the International Academy of Media Arts and Sciences (IAMAS) and holds a degree in mathematics from the Tokyo University of Science. Since 2015, he has served alongside Motoi Ishibashi as a co-director of Rhizomatiks Research, the firm’s division dedicated to exploring new possibilities in the realms of technical and artistic expression, with a focus on R&D-intensive projects. Rhizomatiks Research includes other members like Satoshi Horii and Yuya Hanai. Ishibashi is an engineer and artist, and the director of Rhizomatiks Research. He graduated from the Department of Systems and Control Engineering at the Tokyo Institute of Technology and the IAMAS and is involved in [...]

British-born graphic artist Patrick Thomas has his finger on the pulse of socio-political movements. His handy Protest Stencil Toolkit helps the ‘woke’ generation create protest graphics for modern-day activism, and he’s ever ready to comment on hot-button topics. He framed an acerbic response to the 2013 horse-meat scandal in the UK, in which six carcasses tainted with an anti-inflammatory drug were passed off as beef and may have been eaten by the Queen – his billboard poster depicted a horse with the word “Moo” above it, in large typeface. And in an era of fake news and the decay of truth, his installation Breaking News saw him producing a real-time graphic response to live news, using processing and coding software. This encouraged members of the public to engage with how news is received, processed and understood. This ongoing project has since been realised in Manchester, London, Seoul, Novi Saad and Rome. Thomas believes art has a social function and artists should bear witness to the key events of the age. The Liverpudlian, who was educated at Central Saint Martins School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, may be professor of visual communication at the Stuttgart State [...]

If the thought of using technology to reproduce the patterns and processes of nature makes you anxious, you haven’t come across the glorious work of artist collective Studio DRIFT. The multidisciplinary studio, set up by visionary Dutch artists Lonneke Gordijn and Ralph Nauta, is devoted to bringing humankind back to nature with technology, evoking a sense of awe and wonder in the process. Gordijn and Nauta believe that the best designer is nature itself – but their kinetic installations, created in collaboration with scientists, engineers, computer programmers, universities and research facilities, reflect the symmetry and poetry found in the natural world. The result is touchingly lyrical work that allows us to reimagine possibilities in a world of pollution and climate crisis. Whether floating an enormous concrete block ten feet above spectators at The Armory’s Show’s Pier 94, or having a flock of 300 drones perform a choreographed routine above the Kennedy Space Centre to mark the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 mission launch, DRIFT wants us to reflect on who we are and what it means to be alive in the 21st century. Fuelled by optimism and a spirit of discovery, they advocate for a more sustainable world –they [...]

Design Indaba’s reputation for attracting illustrious speakers from around the world has seen it grow over its 25 years of existence into one of the foremost creative conferences in the world. Always committed to presenting a programme that foregrounds topical issues and cutting-edge developments across industries, its speakers are always at the top of their respective games, as along with rising stars on the brink of greatness. Its close, longstanding relationship with the visual arts has seen globally celebrated talent grace its stages over the years – and this year, Ghanaian star Ibrahim Mahama will join the ranks of artists who have shared their processes and visions with the conference delegates. As the youngest artist to exhibit in the first-ever Ghanaian pavilion at the Venice Biennale, Mahama’s renown is growing worldwide – both for the scale of his work as well as the way in which it tackles complex and complicated aspects of his country’s past. Perhaps best known for his monumental installations, which see architectural structures draped in vast patchworks of old jute sacks, comparable to the work of the great Christo, he is not simply concerned with spectacle. These pieces represent the very fabric of Ghanaian life. Once [...]

The town of Stellenbosch gears up to host an extraordinary series of events, next year, when the first Stellenbosch Triennale will play host to some of the world’s most sought after artists responding to the complex present, historical realities and future possibilities. The Stellenbosch Triennale, brainchild of the Stellenbosch Outdoor Sculpture Trust, will take place from 11 February to 30 April in 2020. Venues across the town will exhibit works in response to the theme of the Triennale Tomorrow There Will Be More of Us. In addition to artworks by practitioners of contemporary art from Africa, the Triennale will also provide a unique learning opportunity for all in its vicinity. Known as The Imaginarium, the carefully engineered platform will be a supplementary, online, open source (i.e. free) discovery and learning resource centre for all ages. This exciting experience will be accessed through the Triennale website, and will be designed to stimulate the imagination while supporting 21st Century learning skills. Prior to the launch of the Stellenbosch Triennale online content, workshops which put this theory into practice have already begun. Workshops and lessons are being held at the Stellenbosch Academy of Design and Photography. Here, Grade 5’s from Devon Valley Primary [...]

Stellenbosch Triennale takes great pleasure in announcing the first 20 participating artists for its inaugural edition, taking place from 11 February to 30 April 2020 at destinations in Stellenbosch. The list reads like a who’s who of contemporary art from African, now. Given the status of the 20 artists on the official selection of the Triennale, the event promises to be one of distinction and inspiration, quite unlike anything that Stellenbosch has seen before. The curator’s exhibition curated by Chief Curator Khanyisile Mbongwa with Triennale curator: Bernard Akoi-Jackson draws from the Triennale’s overarching theme Tomorrow There will Be More of Us. The exhibition will present contemporary art from African in a critical dialogue with the society that fosters and exhibits it. The list of African artists selected by Mbongwa, with her co-curators, informs the major theme. Artists are set to present works that investigate the possibility of healing through engaging with the divided past, the collective present and imagined futures. Responding to the nature of the collective destined for the curator’s exhibition, Mbongwa says, “African creatives confront us with what is possible for a renewal to happen utilising art as a lens, a course correction, a stimuli around curiosity and [...]
