This year’s 100% Design South Africa pavilion at Decorex Cape Town, which showed from 1-5 May 2019 at the Cape Town International Convention Centre (CTICC), was aptly entitled 100% Extraordinary. It served as a tantalising, small-scale preview for the showcase of design excellence that’s to come when the main event opens in Hall 1 at Decorex Joburg at Gallagher Convention Centre in August 2019. 100% Extraordinary was a highly curated display of artisanal designer products and pieces, brought together to express a next-generation idea of what workspaces can be. The selection, curated by the Creative Director of 100% Design South Africa, Cathy O’Clery, featured a variety of leading local brands, many of which showcased all-new products. Under the theme Botanical Office, 100% Extraordinary explored the concept of an office space that offers an antidote to the norm. ‘The botanical theme was a no-brainer for me,’ says O’Clery, ‘People have an intrinsic need to connect with nature and so it’s a logical step to bring elements of this into the workplace.’ In line with the current thinking that office spaces need to be practical and hardwearing without being hard-lined or sterile, the Botanical Office theme showcased brands that brought a tactile [...]

Over 360 registered entries for the inaugural Africa Architecture Awards have been received ahead of the competition’s original closing date. Any project that pertains to Africa may be entered. Entrants hail from more than 27 African countries, including the surrounding islands and the diaspora, and many are still completing the entry process. New registrations are being received daily. The organizers have thus extended the deadline for entries from 30 June 2017 to 14 July 2017. This also presents an opportunity for those who haven’t yet registered for the competition, to do so, as new entries will still be permitted. There are two steps to enter: the first is to register, and the second is to submit documents, images and a film of the entered project. The deadline extension to 14 July 2017 is final and no late entries will be accepted after this date. The amended deadline applies to all categories except the People’s Choice Award, where public voting continues until 18 August 2017. “As the founders of the Africa Architecture Awards, we are naturally pleased to see that the first-ever iteration has been so well received by architects,” says Saint-Gobain representative Evan Lockhart-Barker, the Managing Director of the Saint-Gobain [...]

The PPC Imaginarium Awards has teamed up with the artEC Community Art Centre in Port Elizabeth to host a pop-up exhibition showcasing artworks from the Eastern Cape’s emerging creatives. The exhibition is open to the public and will run until 10 February 2017. The show features a range of artworks that have been entered into the annual awards competition. A project of the innovation department of PPC Ltd, The PPC Imaginarium Awards is an art and design competition in which emerging artists and designers are challenged to demonstrate their knack for innovation by seamlessly incorporating the medium of concrete into each of their respective disciplines. As part of its ethos, artEC pledges to ensure that its annual exhibition calendar includes a selection of open exhibitions in an effort to continue providing opportunities for unestablished artists to exhibit. This policy aligns with The PPC Imaginarium Awards’ vision of promoting and establishing young artists and designers as leaders in their fields. Now in its third year, the BASA award-winning competition has firmly established itself as the country’s leading career-launching platform for up-and-coming artists. With prize money totaling R500 000, the competition offers not only an enticing cash incentive but mentorship and ample [...]

Un-established artists and designers stand a chance to change their careers through financial support, recognition, mentorship and guidance by entering the 2015 PPC Imaginarium Awards. After a successful inaugural competition in 2014, the PPC Imaginarium Awards is back; and is still South Africa’s richest arts and design competition. Having evolved from the longstanding PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards, the PPC Imaginarium encourages artists and designers to create and express their abilities using Portland cement – based concrete as a primary base or material. The competition will feature six disciplines in the arts and design fields. These disciplines are sculpture, jewellery, architecture, film, industrial design and fashion design. Boasting prize money to the value of half a million rand, each category winner stands a chance to win R 50 000; while runner-up contestants receive R 15 000. The overall competition winner will receive the grand prize of R 100 000 at the winners’ exhibition in 2016. How to Enter the PPC Imaginarium Awards The PPC Imaginarium Awards are open to South African citizens, resident holders as well as foreign students with study permits, who are not professionally established in their respective fields. Entries may be submitted by individuals or team collaborations, and artists and [...]
