South Africa’s rich tapestry of history, marked by trauma, resilience, and triumphs, continues to be woven through the art of storytelling. As the nation continues to grapple with its past, present and future, the construction of collective memory is a testament to its enduring national identity and aspirations. HUB Gallery in Cape Town is currently hosting 30 Years the Occupants, a poignant exploration of South Africa’s narrative since 1994, on show until 31 May 2024. The exhibition brings a collection of photo essays from Matthew Willman’s ‘Mandela Heritage Collection’ together with a selection of works from the Spier Collection, a contemporary Southern African collection encapsulating three decades of democracy that represent a multiplicity of post-apartheid narratives. Willman is a renowned documentary and fine art photographer born in Durban, South Africa, in 1979. His creativity was heavily shaped by his childhood during the latter years of apartheid and Nelson Mandela’s ‘walk to freedom’. As a commissioned photographer for the Nelson Mandela Foundation, Willman went on to capture South Africa’s democratic shift. This afforded him many intimate experiences with the man whom, for Willman, ‘embodied the very spirit and conviction we all possess as Africans in the world today.’ The ‘Mandela Heritage [...]

June 2021 will mark the official launch of Clout SA, a purpose-first enterprise, creative agency, and business-to-business (B2B) market-maker for South African design, which states among its goals the promotion of South Africa’s creativity, craftsmanship, heritage, and creating opportunities for collaboration between designers and makers. While many members of the public will be finding out about Clout SA for the first time, the agency’s team has been hard at work building up to this moment for nearly seven years. Much of that work was done on Clout SA’s founding project, the Nando’s Design Programme and eventually, the Nando’s Portal to Africa, an online shopping platform for designer furniture that has facilitated more than R60 million worth of sales across 20,900 products since it was launched in 2018, making it one of the country’s largest exporters of South African design. There are approximately 1 200 Nando’s restaurants located across the globe from Washington DC to Dhaka, and each space showcases bold, bespoke furniture items which are procured through the Portal to Africa. As part of the Nando’s Design Programme, Clout SA has developed and facilitated one of South Africa’s top biennial design competitions, the Nando’s Hot Young Designer Talent Search, which [...]

On Wednesday 26 June, I See U: Imagining a Space for Freedom launched at the Women’s Jail at Constitution Hill in Braamfontein. The exhibition, which runs until 31 July 2019, will showcase more than 35 works from the Spier Collection — one of the country’s largest. Encompassing painting, sculpture, photography, beadwork and drawing, the works powerfully illustrate the importance of art to catalyse change, hold the powerful to account, and give a voice to the voiceless. A stunning showcase of South Africa’s vibrant creative talent, I See U’s featured artists include Athi-Patra Ruga, Helen Sebidi, Ricky Ayanda Dyaloyi, and Diane Victor. “It is highly fitting that this venue is hosting artworks which celebrate South Africa’s democracy,” says Gaisang Sathekge, the Exhibitions and Events Coordinator at Constitution Hill, and I See U’s co-curator. “As a former prison, Constitution Hill reminds the viewer of our nation’s painful past and the price that was paid for our liberation. But, even more importantly — as home, today, of the Constitutional Court — this heritage site symbolises the many freedoms we have obtained through our democracy. This includes the constitutionally-enshrined right to creative freedom.” Containing more than 3,200 works in total, the Spier Collection is one [...]

Now in its third year, Plett ARTS Festival is morphing its identity into something quite unique, and has garnered a small, but growing following. Running from 21-28 June 2019, the festival has been timed to coincide with the Knysna Oyster Festival for those who would like to indulge in the best both festivals have to offer. As part of the 2019 Plett ARTS Festival programme, there will be seven ‘opening nights’ during the festival at various venues around Plettenberg Bay. The Plettenberg will be hosting the ‘Women of Art’ exhibition in partnership with Gallop Hill Gallery. The show features work by Elize Bezuidenhout, Phulani Liebenberg and Marieke Prinsloo Rowe, and there will be an introduction of the mysterious artist, Olivier. The mystery around Olivier has caused a buzz in the art world. Having been an artist for many years, she never released any of her artwork to the public due to her connection to very influential people in the art industry. The exhibition will be open to the public from 21 – 28 June 2019.. The first official night of the Plett Arts Festival at The Plettenberg will take place on Saturday, 22 June 2019, jointly hosted by Dijonne Du [...]

On 11 April 2018, the Curatorial Lab at Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa (Zeitz MOCAA) was officially opened by Kees van Baar, Human Rights Ambassador of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. A new exhibition by Banele Khoza was on view to celebrate the opening of the space. Situated on Level 1 at Zeitz MOCAA, the Curatorial Lab is a multi-disciplinary space for experimental curatorial practice and research that explores new curatorial methodologies, subversive curatorial approaches, non-prescriptive practices, and under-represented topics and issues. The Curatorial Lab initiates lectures, forums, panel discussions, screenings, performances and houses a library, a workshop/viewing room and four galleries. The current focus of the Curatorial Lab is LGBTQI+ issues and rights. It is a dedicated space in the museum to guarantee that the voices and experiences of this community are heard. This focus on LGBTQI+ issues and rights is generously supported by the Consulate General of the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The South African Constitution in theory protects the rights of all, including an individual’s right to sexual choices. Section 9.3 and 9.4 of the Constitution of South Africa guarantees equality before the law and freedom from discrimination for its people. The Equality Right is listed [...]

03.05 – 02.06.2018 99 Loop is delighted to be exhibiting a new body of work by Daniel Nel. “It is the task of the translator to release in their own language that pure language that is under the spell of another, to liberate the language imprisoned in a work in their re-creation of that work.” – Walter Benjamin Spell of Another continues Nel’s exploration of painting as a means of articulating concerns with his relationship to space. Each painting in this show began with a charged encounter between himself and a real, imagined, remembered, but mostly photographed place. These places, through their structures, carried visual or emotive attributes in which a number of Nel’s artistic concerns were symbolised. The title of the show, taken from the passage by Walter Benjamin quoted above, refers to Nel’s process of making these concerns visible. He positions his paintings as an act of translation due to the central role which the photographic image plays in their creation. The moments which the paintings capture are ultimately mundane, but are cast in an uneasy, dreamlike light through the register of monochromatic washes. “For me,” he comments, “painting is an act of freeing or focusing on certain things [...]

Southern Guild is pleased to announce the opening of Bifurcation by Adam Birch, running from 25 April until 12 July at GUILD in the Silo District of the V&A Waterfront, Cape Town. This is the first solo exhibition for the artist, whose functional timber sculptures have become highly sought after at international design fairs and auctions. Adam grew up on a large farm in the Cape Winelands, where his love of trees began as a child, playing in the forests. He completed a Fine Art degree in 2000, majoring in Applied Graphics, but always dreamed of becoming a full-time sculptor. Shortly thereafter he became a tree surgeon, and began to work in his spare time with pieces from the dead trees he was cutting down, transforming them into innovative sculpted furniture. A passionate environmentalist, Adam cuts down only alien tree species and uses indigenous wood from trees that have already fallen. The pieces in Bifurcation have all been carved from the part of the tree that carpenters usually discard: the fork. At this junction – where the trunk bifurcates into two branches – the wood grain becomes twisted and dense, making it difficult to cut. But in the anatomy of [...]

Southern Guild presents a new solo show of paintings by Olaf Hajek, Paravent, at GUILD in Cape Town’s Silo District from 25 April to 12 July 2018. Held in collaboration with Whatiftheworld, this is the internationally renowned German painter’s third solo show in Cape Town. The 14 acrylic paintings in this new body of work depict still-lives, interiors, portraits and landscapes, whose theatricality is heightened by the recurring motif of a folding screen (“paravent” in French). “The screen creates its own mysterious space. Behind it, you find a hidden world but it also provides security and shelter,” Olaf explains. A technically perfect illustrator, he creates enchanting visual patterns, scenes and creative characters in which nature and artifice are intertwined. Olaf collects mental images everywhere he goes: on his travels, in magazines, or on the internet. African traditions, Indian temple art, South American folklore, and pop culture are all expressed in new ways in his almost surreal tableaux. He plays with motifs of flora and fauna, archaic symbols and current themes, working them all into his pieces in great detail and vibrant colour. The works on show were all painted by Olaf during a recent residency in Cape Town, which [...]

In the spirit of bold originality that has marked its decade long journey of pioneering collectible design in South Africa, the gallery invited the makers to produce exploratory new work that crosses over into other disciplines, materials or technologies. Extra Ordinary features both emerging and established designers outside of Southern Guild’s core stable. They include fashion designer Rich Mnisi, ceramic artists Zizipho Poswa and Madoda Fani, sculptors Daniella Mooney and Stanislaw Trzebinski, and newcomers such as 3D illustrator Ferdi B. Dick. Julian McGowan, co-founder of The Guild Group, encouraged the designers to work outside their comfort zone, providing mentorship and guidance along the way. “They’re accomplished designers already – we wanted them to think differently about themselves and their work,” says Julian. “The result for each designer is [...]

Members of the public are invited to visit the AVA Gallery to review a selection of art and design projects entered in the fashion, sculpture, jewellery and industrial design categories of the 2018 PPC Imaginarium Awards.
