British-born graphic artist Patrick Thomas has his finger on the pulse of socio-political movements. His handy Protest Stencil Toolkit helps the ‘woke’ generation create protest graphics for modern-day activism, and he’s ever ready to comment on hot-button topics. He framed an acerbic response to the 2013 horse-meat scandal in the UK, in which six carcasses tainted with an anti-inflammatory drug were passed off as beef and may have been eaten by the Queen – his billboard poster depicted a horse with the word “Moo” above it, in large typeface. And in an era of fake news and the decay of truth, his installation Breaking News saw him producing a real-time graphic response to live news, using processing and coding software. This encouraged members of the public to engage with how news is received, processed and understood. This ongoing project has since been realised in Manchester, London, Seoul, Novi Saad and Rome. Thomas believes art has a social function and artists should bear witness to the key events of the age. The Liverpudlian, who was educated at Central Saint Martins School of Art and the Royal College of Art in London, may be professor of visual communication at the Stuttgart State [...]

Two years ago IKEA teamed up with a group of designers, architects, artists and creatives from five African countries to collaborate around modern urban rituals and the importance they play in the home. The result is the limited-edition collection ÖVERALLT, which will be launched on 27th February 2019 at the place where it all started – Design Indaba Festival in Cape Town. The journey of ÖVERALLT started with IKEA wanting to learn more about the contemporary African design scene and the creative explosion that can be seen in several cities around Africa. Ten designers, all connected to the South African multi-faceted platform Design Indaba and its network, teamed up with five IKEA designers. The starting point was to explore modern urban rituals connected to socializing around food, indoor and outdoor living, the rituals around expressing identity and sustainability. From there, the design and development process has resulted in a collection of products that is all about building bridges and discovering the “urban living room” together with others. “With ÖVERALLT, we want to encourage and trigger people to come together and eat, share stories, be creative and spend time with one another. And, thanks to the merging of creatives and all the good discussions we’ve had along the way, each design has a way of supporting that. ÖVERALLT is [...]

Each year as part of the larger festival and conference programme, Design Indaba showcases the country’s top young Emerging Creatives, supported by the Department of Arts and Culture. With 50 finalists chosen from around the country, spanning a range of disciplines – from fashion and furniture, to art and architecture, branding and product design – Emerging Creatives is a launch platform for future local design stars. “We believe in the creative potential and excellence that our country has to offer. We are honoured to continue being a part of the Emerging Creatives programme in 2019,” says Masana Chikeka of the Department of Arts & Culture. The programme was established in 2005 out of a strong belief in the importance of nurturing new creative talent and minimising the barriers to entry for young entrepreneurs. In the last 14 years, Emerging Creatives has helped to launch the careers of numerous celebrated local designers including Laduma Ngxokolo of MaXhosa by Laduma and renowned ceramicist Andile Dyalvane, and more recently fashion designer Rich Mnisi, multi-disciplinary artist Atang Tshikare and Kim and Natalie Ellis from The Joinery. “It really is a great opportunity to gain experience, exposure, prospective clients and to meet fellow creatives who are at a similar stage in their careers,” says artist, [...]

Un-established artists and designers stand a chance to change their careers through financial support, recognition, mentorship and guidance by entering the 2015 PPC Imaginarium Awards. After a successful inaugural competition in 2014, the PPC Imaginarium Awards is back; and is still South Africa’s richest arts and design competition. Having evolved from the longstanding PPC Young Concrete Sculptor Awards, the PPC Imaginarium encourages artists and designers to create and express their abilities using Portland cement – based concrete as a primary base or material. The competition will feature six disciplines in the arts and design fields. These disciplines are sculpture, jewellery, architecture, film, industrial design and fashion design. Boasting prize money to the value of half a million rand, each category winner stands a chance to win R 50 000; while runner-up contestants receive R 15 000. The overall competition winner will receive the grand prize of R 100 000 at the winners’ exhibition in 2016. How to Enter the PPC Imaginarium Awards The PPC Imaginarium Awards are open to South African citizens, resident holders as well as foreign students with study permits, who are not professionally established in their respective fields. Entries may be submitted by individuals or team collaborations, and artists and [...]
