Works by two of South Africa’s most renowned artists make rare public appearances when they go on sale this month by Stephan Welz & Co. for the first time at an auction. Seychelles Girl by Alexis Preller has not been seen in public for several decades and Winterveld by Jacob Henrik Pierneef has remained in the family of the current owner since it was first purchased. The works go on the Stephan Welz & Co. Fine Art and Design auction in Johannesburg on April 29 and 30. Signed and dated ’49, the oil on canvas painting by Preller (1911 -1975) being auctioned for the first time is a sensitive depiction of a young Seychelles woman painted during the period when the artist visited the Indian Ocean island. Stephan Welz & Co. is offering the work with an estimated price of R1 million to R1.5 million. The signed painting by Pierneef (1886-1957), widely regarded as South Africa’s most renowned landscape artist, depicts the Winterveld area north of Pretoria. “The use of light and colour is particularly evocative and is a very desirable example of the artist’s work,” says Stephen Welz & Co. fine art specialist Luke Crossley. The estimated price is [...]

The 2018 edition of the authoritative Platter’s Wine Guide has awarded a prestigious and much coveted five stars to Cape Winemakers Guild Auction Reserve Frans K. Smit 2013. Now in its 38th edition, South Africa’s best-selling wine guide reveals the very best the winelands have to offer. In order for a wine to be considered as a five-star champion, the wine had to be rated more than 95 out of 100 by a panel of the country’s most respected wine tasters. About 900 wines were blind-tasted over three days, which makes the five-star achievement yet another honour for Spier’s 300 years of winemaking history and resident cellar master Frans Smit. The Cape Winemakers Guild Frans K. Smit 2013 is a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon (52%) and Merlot (40%), with a touch of Cabernet Franc (8%) playing a supporting role. The blend pays tribute to Smit’s great love of wine, his winemaking skills and dedication to the process. Only 600 bottles of this limited-edition wine were produced exclusively for the 2017 Cape Winemakers Guild Auction, which annually showcases the finest and most exclusive wines produced in small quantities by some of South Africa’s leading winemakers. It’s the fourth time that a [...]

A selection of the best of African limited edition design, courtesy of Southern Guild Gallery, will be showcased at the Christie’s Design Auction in London. This is the first time a comprehensive and meaningful collection from the continent has been available to purchase in London. The exhibition that opens on 31 October, and culminates in an auction on 3 November, offers an opportunity for international collectors to access African collectible design. “This is the first time Southern Guild has shown a collection of such significance in collaboration with one of the most important auction houses in the world,” says Trevyn McGowan, co-founder of Southern Guild with her husband Julian. “The collaboration is a unique moment for us, but it’s also the first time our British and international audience can access the products from our ground-breaking African designers in London,” she says. Christie’s is one of the world’s largest auction houses, with a presence in 32 countries. In 2014, it reported record sales of 5.1 billion pounds ($7.7 billion). According to the auction house, the collaboration with Southern Guild signifies its clients’ heightened interest in African design. “Southern Guild’s commitment to developing greater recognition for African design, combined with the innovation [...]
